We are looking to make some reforms to the Scummies and Mashies next year. If you are not aware of what the Scummies and Mashies is, it is the site's annual awards ceremony. We just posted the ceremony and winners for 2024. As part of this initiative, we would love to see some new faces on the Scummies and Mashies Steering Committee (SSC). The SSC is a group that is responsible for two main things:
- Discussing changes to the Scummies and Mashies. Various topics include the awards that users can be nominated for and the format of the ceremony each year.
- Overseeing the logistics of the Scummies and Mashies each year. This includes things like running the nominations thread, organizing judging, and producing the ceremony each year.
- Nominations Thread Custodian- The nominations thread custodian is responsible for ensuring that the nomination threads remain up-to-date. You are not expected to update it every day, but it is important that the thread does not get too out-of-date especially towards the end of the year so that people can see which categories need more nominations.
- Head Judge- The head judge is responsible for organizing judging each year. This includes setting the schedule for judging, recruiting judges, organizing the various forms and discussion threads for judging, and making decisions on how to handle ties and any other concerns that come up during the process of judging. It is helpful, but not required, for the head judge to participate in the judging of each award. Note that Mafia and Mish Mash/ORG tend to do separate judging (and would thus each have a separate head judge to organize the process).
- Lead Writer/Ceremony Planner- The lead writer works with the SSC chair to ensure that the ceremony is written each year. Traditionally, tasks associated with this role include recruiting other writers, coming up with the concept/theme for the ceremony, setting the schedule for writing, and otherwise overseeing the writing process. As part of the reforms being discussed, we may be making changes to the format of the ceremony, so this role may evolve to suit the new format.
- Banner Designer- Each award comes with its own unique banner that the winner gets to display until the next ceremony. A banner designer is responsible for designing banners for new awards and updating the designs for existing awards as appropriate.
- Committee Chair- The committee chair is responsible for overseeing the success of the Scummies and Mashies as a whole. This includes bringing topics up for discussion, ensuring the ceremony happens each year, and having the final say on any decisions made by the committee.
