Most towns reach a point where they feel the need to massclaim. Claiming order is important, since later claims have more information about the setup and are easier to fake; one way of deciding this, called "popcorn" claiming, is to pick a random person to claim first, and then have them pick someone who claims and picks someone else who claims and picks someone, and so on. But how effective is this system, and how would a mafia game based around it play out?

The Setup

Nightless; 8 townies, 4 mafia.
The mafia pick a townie to be the first gunbearer.
The town discuss amongst themselves, and the gunbearer picks someone to target by posting
shoot Elmo
or similar.
If their target is mafia, the target dies and the gunbearer keeps the gun.
If their target is town, the gunbearer dies and the target becomes the new gunbearer.
Repeat until all mafia are dead, or the mafia's numbers equal the non-gunbearing townies.

Deadlines will be 24 days for Day 1, 21 days for Day 2, and 18 days thereafter; prods will be every 48 hours. If the deadline hits, the gunbearer will shoot themselves and the mafia pick a new gunbearer. If you go five days without posting, you'll be replaced. The gunbearer is announced publicly each day, and is therefore confirmed innocent.

Possible Roles PMs

You win when the number of living mafia members equal or exceed the number of living townies, minus the gunbearer.

Please immediately reply "confirm" or similar if you're ready, or PM me any questions you may have. The game thread is here.
Role PMs should be out by the time you read this. If you don't have one, PM me. If you don't confirm within 48 hours, I'll replace you; we'll begin when everyone has confirmed, and the mafia have picked the first gunbearer. I'd tell you to bandwagon to victory, but...

Bogre is likely scum here... I wouldn't expect town to make that mistake, but scum might (because they've been thinking about picking the initial gunbearer).

Haha yes, I considered that and dismissed it as dumb.

I guess we should vote or FoS even though it has no game effect, in order to aid scumhunting. Like this:
FoS: rite
- only scum don't capitalise their names.

I also think Val should keep her thoughts to herself as much as possible (bar asking questions she wants answered, or analysis she thinks will be useful for town) - there's no point in letting the scum know how she's leaning until she pulls the trigger, and she doesn't have to prove herself town.

Hello everyone.

I agree with Xyl. This game is going to all come down to how many times scum gets shot vs. how many times town misfires and dies Scum has no kill, not even a vote. Each mislynch gets us closer to losing, which means a pro-town person acting scummy to try and get the gun is just bad play that lowers our odds of winning.

We don't have that much room for error here. Basically, we have to shoot right 4 times out of 8, half of the time. Considering that a shot right now has only a little better then a 1/3 chance of hitting scum, we have to shoot significantly better then random to win. So, we have to be smart about this, scumhunt properly, be active, and generally play well in order to win.

Traditionally, games like this (this game reminds me of a mix of Bad Idea and Kingmaker) don't go well for the town, mostly because town either lurks or makes bad choices. I'm not saying that to get people depressed. From a game theory point of view, we've got a decent chance, better then in 4:8 nightless, so long as we just play well and don't be stupid.
I want us to win just for Yos' inevitable rant alone. -CrashTextDummie

Ah.

On the contrary, scum would know that they can only choose the initial gunbearer.

I also agree with Xyl and Yos, deliberate scuminess to try and acquire the gun as a town player will very likely result in a town loss.

EBWOP: My only question is, Yos, about your post, don't the numbers change based on if we hit scum or not?

Hmm. Yeah, they do, you're right. Right now, we lose if we mislynch 4 times in a row. If we hit scum today, we get an extra chance, and only lose if we mislynch 5 times. Since scum have to get 50% of town to win, each time we hit scum, we get an extra mislynch.

Ok, that's good, it's not quite as bad as I thought.

Looking at this player list, there aren't that many dumb/impulsive people (I don't know rite and Sarag and Vala though), so overall I don't think we have to be too worried about impulsive shots.

I don't like Sarag's post. The part about voting and FoSing seems forced IMHO.

Vala, do not be impulsive about your shot. Wait and make sure you're making the right decision before you shoot someone. I have absolutely no idea how you play, which is why I'm giving you this warning now.

I would imagine the opposite, what with scum needed to read and understand the rules that apply to them, while town doesn't.
I also think Val should keep her thoughts to herself as much as possible
This sounds like you're trying to move the entirety of the pressure onto the current gun bearer.

Not really. Keeping stuff to yourself for a while is okay, but I'd advise letting people know who you're planning to kill ahead of time, rather than just suddenly shooting. The last-minute flurry of activity is very informative.

Gunbearer is actually similar to the king in kingmaker. That in mind, here's some advice on playing king which should apply:

- Ask lots of questions. Probe.
- Ask people to analyze specific things. Try to get people to make cases on players they'd rather ignore.
- Don't let anyone lurk. If you spot someone lurking, find something for them to analyze.
- It's often revealing to ask someone to argue the opposite of their own position.

Well yeah. But on the other hand, tipping anyone off too early that I'm leaning toward one particular person being scum only gives scum unnecessary swaying power over me. :P

I will be around tomorrow to hopefully ask some pointed questions or... something. <_<

Hmm yeah, I wasn't too clear on that, but I didn't mean literally until the post where she pulls the trigger. Anyway, obviously what to talk about and what not to is something Val will need to decide on - I wanted to point out that she needn't feel she has to play transparently in order to prove her towniness.

I'm not familiar with the kingmaker role, but the rest of Xyl's advice seems good.

@Zakeri - The scum put pressure on Val when they made her gun bearer. My discussing the situation and trying to be helpful did not.

@Slicey - It seems forced because it is. I'm very deliberately suggesting a practice for denoting who we think should be shot. What's not to like? So far the conversation has been about strategy, which I think is useful, but will only go so far with actually finding scum.

Yay random questions!

Please refrain from answering anyone else's question until they have done so themselves. Otherwise, they might just regurgitate your answer, which entirely defeats the purpose of asking questions in the first place.

@Yosarian2: Do you prefer playing as scum or town? Why?

@Vaya:
Why is your name so similiar to mine?
(Er, just kidding. <_<) When you decided to join this game, which side (include initial gunbearer, so out of mafia/townie/first gunbearer) were you hoping to end up on and why?

@Vala Mal Doran: You're so awesome you don't even have to answer a question! ^_^

@DragonsofSummer: If you were to become gunbearer, how likely would you be to jokingly shoot yourself at any point? Please elaborate enough so that we get some insight into your personality.

@Slicey: Do you like the RVS that occurs in most games? If so, why? If not, why not?

@ortolan: Have you ever played any real-life mafia, and if so, do you prefer it to forum mafia? Why or why not?

@rite: Who do you think is most likely to lurk as scum? (Is it you?) Why?

@Xylthixlm: Who in this game do you think could most convincingly pull off faking town as scum (including yourself)? Elaborate beyond a couple of sentences please.

@DraketheFake: What is your favourite role to play, and why?

@Sarag: How well do you think I will handle the pressure of gunbearer from what little you've seen me post? Please elaborate beyond a one-sentence answer.

@Zakeri: How aware are you of your own meta? Do you often change your playstyle to try to trip up people who would use your meta to determine your alignment?

@Bogre: Why shouldn't I shoot you today?
And as your mother, you will listen to me, young lady. There will be no leading of these ships and armies on a mass-murdering crusade. Or else.
