I still think it's serious backpedaling. Your other points are valid but could be applied to scum too. It also ignores his later play where he seems, to me, strangely smug. I dont want to misrepresent the question and correct me if Im wrong, but in this post you are saying that players that are town tend to do that (push buttons so target cant handle). I assume you are talking about CKD. How do you know CKD is town?
