Mini 950: Drum Corps International Mafia

It's August in Indiana, time for the Drum Corps International World Championships: three days to see the best drum corps in the world compete to see who has this year's best show.

However, all is not well. Less than a week before the World Class quarterfinals were scheduled to start, administrative officials discovered some troubling documents indicating collusion between some of the corps and the officiating crew. The papers suggested that the corps in question wanted to ensure that only a select few could win world championships. Representatives from twelve of the corps were brought into a conference room at the Marriott Indianapolis hotel, given codenames, and shown a map of which room each was sleeping in.

"The corps who want to take over are in here, I can guarantee you," said one of the administrators. "And you might want to find them and kick them out sooner rather than later: we have reason to believe they might take... extreme... measures to achieve their goal."

With no further words, the administrators left.

Rules:

1. This is a game. Play to win, but also to have fun.
2. Votes must be in
bold
for them to count, like this:
Vote: saberwolf.
Unvoting is not necessary, but your fellow players will appreciate it.
2a. You may, if you so choose, vote by proxy.
3. Vote counts will be as close to the top of the page as I can put them.
4. I may be God, but I am not infallible. If I make a mistake, please tell me.
5. While the game is going on, do not discuss it except when and where I specifically allow you to.
5a. I post QuickTopics after the game. Take that into account when deciding what to write in one.
6. Similarly, do not quote private mod-player communications. You may paraphrase, though. If you're not sure if it crosses the line, run it by me.
7. Days will be deadlined at two weeks. Except for replacements, these are non-negotiable. At deadline, half of a majority will be required to lynch.
There will be no reduced number of votes when there are 7 or fewer players.

8. V/LA: If it's in-thread, I'll see it. If it's in your sig, I'll see it. If you send me a PM, I'll see it, and I'll post it in-thread. If it's in the V/LA thread, I'll probably miss it.
If I don't know about it, it’s your fault.
If it’s too long, I'll ask for you to find your own replacement. (You may talk with your replacement before you have to leave.)
9. Prods will go out after 48 hours without a post (unless the player is on V/LA). The proddee will then have 48 hours to post in thread or they will be replaced. If you post before I get around to handing out the prod, you avoid the prod; similarly, if you return before I find a replacement, you can stay in the game. Prod #3 will equal replacement.
10. If enough players are voting for No Lynch to make any other majority impossible, the day will end in No Lynch.
11. When a lynch is reached, the game will enter twilight until I come to lock the thread.
All players alive during that day may talk during twilight,
but don't expect it to be particularly long.
12. Nights will last approximately 48 hours.
13. If you die, stop posting until after the game is over. You are allowed one "bah" post provided it contains no game-related content (something like "Go town!" is acceptable; something like "My tracking results were X and Y" is not).
14. If, for whatever reason, I decide to edit your post, it will be in
blue bold
. Don’t use that style.
15. Anything that would be illegal to actually do is also illegal to fake.
16. If I find that I've left something off, or that something needs clarification, I reserve the right to update these rules. I will tell you if/when that happens.

A vanilla townie PM looks like this:
Sample PM: Mandarins, Vanilla Townie wrote:
If this were a real PM, there would be flavor text here.

Welcome to Drum Corps International Mafia,
Player
. You are the
Mandarins
, an entertaining, family-friendly corps that really has no business being in an environment where you need to actually kill people.

You are a
Vanilla Townie
. You have no special abilities.

You win when all other factions have left the game, or nothing can prevent this from happening.

Confirm in-thread.
A town power role PM looks like this:
Sample PM: Pioneer, Townie Roleblocker wrote:
No, I'm not going to bother writing flavor text for a sample PM.

Welcome to Drum Corps International Mafia,
Player
. You are
Pioneer
, a corps with a strong Irish heritage. And of course getting drunk every night will help you out with the situation you're now in... right?

You are a
Townie Roleblocker
. You have the following special ability:
Active:

Spirit of the Pioneer:
Each night, you may take a player with you to the nearest bar as a drinking buddy. That player will be unable to perform any night actions they might otherwise have.

You win when all other factions are dead, or nothing can prevent this from happening.

Confirm in-thread.

It has come to my attention that The1fifi has not posted anywhere on site since March 19th, and has probably flaked from the site. As such, I will begin looking for a replacement immediately.

Nikanor has until I get back on Sunday from visiting relatives to confirm. If he has not confirmed by then, he will be replaced.

Day 1 begins!
With 12 alive, it will take 7 votes to lynch and 4 to lynch at deadline.

Deadline:
Friday, April 16, 2010, ~7:45 AM CDT (GMT-6+1)

Stephoscope replaces The1fifi. Please welcome him to the game!

Nicodemus and Starbuck are being prodded (already).

As he has stated, animorpherv1 will temporarily be posting as Clank due to issues with his main account.

Any day where you're hauled off to a room with eleven people you don't recognize and told that some of you are willing to kill the others is a bad day. This was shaping up to fall right into line.

An early declaration by Parama that the schemers were kunkstar7, Stephoscope and Nachomamma8 was met with doubt and disbelief. Some players spoke up throughout the day, others only when prompted. Finally, as the sun was setting, it was decided that animorpherv1 needed to be disposed of if DCI was to have a hope of a fair competition.

They hauled him up to the roof of the building, took his room key to see if anything in his room might give them some clue what corps he was and whose side he was on, and threw him off. When they headed down to look at his room, they didn't see a whole lot: a mellophone, some sheet music (presumably for his show), and a blue sword. Wait... a blue sword? The only corps any of them could think of that might have a thematic tie to a blue sword was the Blue Knights. Starbuck ran out to ask the organizers if the Blue Knights were one of the rogue corps...

and returned decidedly depressed. "Nope." After an awkward silence, someone asked, "So... do we just go to bed and hope we wake up in the morning?"

"Yeah, I think so." One by one, they all headed off to their hotel rooms in silence, hoping that they lived to see tomorrow.

animorpherv1,
Blue Knights,
Vanilla Townie, Lynched D1

It is now Night 1. Day 2 will start
Sunday morning
Monday morning, because I get back from a band trip at ~11 PM Sunday night.

(For reference: The color of the corps name is one of the corps colors, and is not indicative of anything. The color of everything else
is
indicative of alignment - green is town, red is mafia, any other alignment would be represented by another color.)

The corps representatives woke up the next morning feeling very refreshed... except for the ones that didn't wake up at all. When they were all assembled and it was discovered that they were missing an additional, not one, but two of their number, they wondered if the missing ones were merely sleeping in and decided to go see what the problem was.

NavyCherub was the first one they looked for. He was in his room, all right, with a gun in his hand pointed at his head and with a CD player playing B.B. King's greatest hits. Some wondered if it could be a suicide; others didn't think so, citing the location of the bullet hole (six inches from where the gun was pointing) as evidence, and suspected foul play. A quick search of his room revealed that, fittingly enough for a cherub, he'd been a member of The Academy.

When they got to Looker's room, though, a much different scene awaited them. Looker was lying face-up... spread-eagled... with a variety of pentagrams and circles carved into his torso. As he turned to leave, Nicodemus tripped over a pamphlet lying on the ground describing the Wilderness Survival merit badge for the Boy Scouts of America - opened to a page discussing how to track animals.

Oh, dear.

The Academy,
Vanilla Townie, Got the Blues Real Bad N1

Looker, Madison Scouts, Townie Tracker, Sacrificed N1

kunkstar7 is V/LA, and CryMeARiver has avoided prodding by virtue of me being a slacker. Starbuck and Nicodemus, however, are prod-eligible and have been prodded; this is the second prod for both - the next time I catch them being prod-eligible, I'll begin a replacement search.

Another long day of fractious debate. The names of possible suspects were thrown around like confetti, Nikanor being the most vocal about having a variety of suspicions. As the sun drifted towards the western horizon and the group grew more and more bloodthirsty, it was finally decided that Nikanor needed to be gotten rid of to make life easier for everyone.

Unlike with animorpherv1, the group decided they would suffocate Nikanor. When they ran into his room to find something to do the job, Nachomamma8 noticed a mike headset on the nightstand. As a unit, the group decided they would stuff it down Nikanor's throat, which they then proceeded to do.

After they were confident that Nikanor was dead, Slaxx mentioned that there were really only two corps that used voice amplification, and it was the Cadets who used mike headsets. It was quickly agreed that Nikanor must have been the Cadets (some of you had noticed his habit of taking his first step with his right foot), and Nicodemus was dispatched to confirm that the Cadets were, in fact, one of the corps trying to rig the competition.

He came back five minutes later with a look of profound disappointment. "Their exact words were, 'Despite what you may have expected, the Cadets did only want a fair contest.'" Somewhat shaken, and recalling the multiple deaths the previous night, the eight of you remaining return to your rooms.

A mumbled comment - it was impossible to tell from whom - suggested that everyone should sleep with one eye open.

"Good morning. This is your wake-up call... Good morning. This is your wake-up call..."

Nachomamma8 threw the phone back in the general direction of the receiver (missing by a mile), feeling grumpy that he hadn't had his morning coffee yet... until it crossed his sleep-addled mind that hearing the wake-up call meant he wasn't dead yet. Understandably, this cheered him up a good deal. He pulled on pants and a shirt and headed to the buffet, then the conference room where the group had spent so much of the last two days.

He got there to discover five other faces. "Who are we missing?"

Stephoscope said, "Uh... Starbuck and Parama. We were about to go start looking for you, to be honest."

Starbuck's room was closer, so they went there first. Her room was filled with nice blown glass (some of the group remembered a glassblower friend of theirs who went by DrippingGoofball and wondered if it was her handiwork), some of which had apparently been broken and used to stab her to death. She was in the Glassmen, that much was clear; a quick email to the admins came back saying that yes, the Glassmen were innocent of any wrongdoing.

On their way down to Parama's room, they saw him in the hallway. He was holding two boxy objects, one of which appeared to have earbuds plugged in, and was staggering like a drunk. As they got closer, they could tell he was saying something, but they couldn't really hear it until the last bit: "...I... am... Spa
r
t
a

u
*floomp*
"

kunkstar7 ran over to Parama and took a look. "Sleeping pills. Looks like he must have taken an entire box of them just a few minutes ago. And he's got an iPod playing 'Best of Basie'... does that mean anything to anyone?"

"Count Basie was a jazz pianist," CryMeARiver piped up. "Do we want to try to revive him?"

"Tell you the truth, I'd rather not," said Slaxx. "Hey, do you think that 'Spartacus' bit meant anything?"

"Didn't Phantom do a Spartacus show a couple of years ago?" someone asked. The administrators walking by revealed that Parama had, in fact, been a member of Phantom Regiment, and that Phantom was making an independent effort to take over the circuit.

Relieved that one threat to their continued existence was out of the way, the remaining six players went back to the conference room for a third day of arguing.

Simply having fewer people in no way made it easier to come to a consensus. As the day wore on, people came close to being agreed to kill one person or another, but never quite got there.

However, in past days, they'd still ended up killing
someone.
This time, they didn't have enough people to convince themselves that someone devoted to fair play necessarily agreed on the lynch, so they eventually decided that they'd just go back to their rooms and hope everything blew over. After all, they already had one killer down - there'd still be enough of them left the next day to have a majority, right? Right?

Perhaps some of the musicians had been hoping that a no-lynch would lead to a no-kill that night. Unfortunately, that was not to be: Of the six who went to bed last night, five got up that morning.

Slaxx was conspicuously absent from the conference room once the other five arrived. Fearing the worst, they went to his room - yep, he was dead, all right. His wrists were slit, he was holding a razor, and his CD player was playing Gershwin. They didn't even have to look too hard to see that as he had claimed, he was from the Bluecoats, and he'd been investigating different corps to see if they'd been up to anything nefarious. Nobody expected him to have been scum, but they checked just to make sure - what do you know, he was as innocent as NavyCherub had been.

For once, the players actually came to a consensus quickly, with Stephoscope again voting that CryMeARiver was most likely to be trying to break the system. kunkstar7 and Robocopter87 agreed and said that they felt Stephoscope should be the one to kill him.

"With what?"

"Well, this is a conference room, there have to be projector cables and such around here," suggested kunkstar7.

"Good point," replied Stephoscope, who soon fashioned a noose out of surge protectors and extension cords.

A while after Stephoscope finished putting the noose around CryMeARiver's neck and released him to let him hang from the ceiling, they took him down and checked to make sure he was dead. As Nachomamma8 and Stephoscope turned around from checking CryMeARiver's vital signs, each found themselves staring down a Smith and Wesson. One shot from each was all it took.

"Gentlemen, I think you'll find your victory to be hollower than you'd anticipated," said one of the administrators as kunkstar7 and Robocopter87 strode out of the conference room.

:? "How so?" asked kunkstar7.

"Most of the other World Class corps heard what happened and are pulling out in protest," said the admin. "It's a lot easier to control who wins when you're the only two competitors."

Oh, so close. You can feel the championship getting closer and closer, and it's almost agonizing waiting for the day when it finally happens. Second place last year... God, you can almost taste the victory. Finally, you've grown tired of waiting and have decided to try for a hostile takeover of DCI... but you joined Division I/World Class/whatever it's called less than 20 years ago, and you know you'll need some help from someone with legitimacy.

Welcome to Drum Corps International Mafia,
Nicodemus
Robocopter87
. You are
Carolina Crown
, the highest-placing corps not to have won a championship. You'd like to get one, but you're not confident you can do it on your own... luckily for you, you've joined forces with another corps to try to get one for yourself.

You are the
Mafia Goon
. You have the following special abilities:
Factional:

You are a member of the Mafia with
kunkstar7
(Blue Devils, Mafia Godfather). Each night, you may discuss in this QuickTopic who to kill and who to send to make the kill. As long as you are both alive, Player 2 has the final say on who kills and who dies. Your kill method is "Finished".
Safeclaim:
You know that
The Cavaliers
are not in the game and should be safe to claim; if they were, they would be a Vanilla Townie. (A full safeclaim PM is forthcoming.)

You win when all other factions have left the game, or nothing can prevent this from happening.

It's only fitting, then, that you get the most basic of roles here.

Welcome to Drum Corps International Mafia,
Nicodemus
Robocopter87
. You are
The Cavaliers
, the corps that originally set the DCI score record in 2002, with your show Frameworks. Unfortunately, just being good on the field isn't enough.

You win when all other factions have left the game, or nothing can prevent this from happening.

It took you long enough to get to the top, didn't it? You tied in 1996, but you wanted more. You had to wait twelve more years for an outright title, but when you got it, you relished it.

And then you got sunk to ninth. Ninth! What, do these people have no respect for you?

Screw this. You're out to get as many more championships as you can... and these corps who're trying to set up a power-sharing arrangement just gave you an idea.

Welcome to Drum Corps International Mafia,
Parama

Phantom Regiment

Now you're into a new situation, and you're ready to return to your roots. You're out for the blood of these upstarts, but you don't want to get rid of the pure at heart... hmmm, what to do...

Welcome to Drum Corps International Mafia,

Now, time to go practice for your Wilderness Survival merit badge by tracking these other people to wherever they go.
