Sorry to bump this old thread, but where did the name "C9" come from to describe this now ubiquitous set-up?

split into four sets of 2 digits, where each bit represents a power role:

11 (cop and doc)
00 (none)
10 (cop only)
01 (doc only)

It's also (nerdaliciously) a Star Trek: TNG episode name...
