Voting, Lynching, and Death

Activity

Some Mod Flavor

There was something terribly wrong with the dog. It wasn't one of the local dogs that most of the residents of Nito City were used to seeing; this one seemed partially rabid, and had black, disheveled fur along with deep bloodshot red eyes that were terrifying enough to make possums play dead even if they were more than 200 feet away. And it just kept on approaching the town square paw step by paw step by paw step.

When it reached the square, all 12 residents couldn't help but to look at it in sheer disbelief. What would it do? Would it attack someone? Was it actually rabid or did it just look that way?

What happened next couldn't have been predicted by anyone. The dog didn't attack anyone. It didn't bark or yelp or growl. And it didn't flash its yellowing, decaying teeth at anyone either. Nope. None of that. Instead it just..... keeled over and passed away. Paws straight up in the air, dead. One of you decided to poke it with a stick just to be sure. And yeah... it didn't budge. It was completely stiff like one of those stuffed dogs that the old antique store owner had waiting for someone to buy. But the note wrapped around its collar. What did it say?

"Beware. Not of the dog. But of the evil forces that just might exist in this town."

Huh?

What could the note have meant? Why was it tied to a dog? Why did the dog... die?

You all begin thinking about all of that silently in your heads. Some of you even begin mouthing the words over and over again as if in a trance or a silent prayer.

"Be-ware. Not of the dog. But of the evi--," Charlie began to say before being cut off.

"Why don't you stop acting like you don't know what it means? You were probably the one who put the damn thing there in the first place. You always did have an evil look to ya," stated one of you.

Oddly enough, a bunch of you began to agree. Another six of you as a matter of fact. The rest of you kinda sorta nodded along thinking that the Charlie-lead just might be valid after all. Realistically, there was only one way to find out. Hang the dude and see what happens when he dies. Maybe check out his belongings and crap once he's dead.

Well, the town's noose hadn't gotten much usage in many years but it was time. The note SAID so for Christ's sake. As Charlie dangled high above the crowd feeling his life being sapped from him, he took something out of his pocket and threw it before your feet. His last breath and words: "do it for me, town".

The thing he threw on the ground? It wasn't exactly clear. It didn't look like a badge or anything like that, no. But it was certainly informational.

The very first night after the mysterious dog died didn't seem so bad after all. I mean, after the public lynching of Charlie nobody died and all 11 of you appeared the next day at the town square ready to discuss this whole thing some more. It was still kind of awkward though - if the dog was some kind of a bad omen, why exactly DID nothing happen during the night? Whatever it was that happened ultimately didn't matter though - the important thing was you all were alive and well.

But what about this Jason fellow? He looked like a shady character, no? The accusations and finger-pointing nearly grew to the point where the majority of you decided that he had to die.

"But I'm a Doctor!" shouted Jason.

"Oh yeah?" inquired one of you. "If you're a doctor, lemme see your medical license."

Jason reached into the inside of his jacket pocket but upon doing so, a gun fell from beneath his coat. Realizing that he was definitely caught at that point, Jason took the noose with his own hands, tied it around his own neck, and hung himself for all of the town to see.

"I hope you all burn in Hell!" shouted Jason before the air escaped from his lungs.

The sight was almost too gruesome to see. Some of you turned away while some of you wish you had popcorn to enjoy the spectacle. The important thing though was this: one of those evil forces that that letter had mentioned was officially dead.

Fertilizer, alcohol swabs, and gasoline.

It was a most gruesome death. Finding vollkan with his head planted face down into the ground in some neighboring field was nearly unbearable to see. By the looks of things, it seems like whoever did this poured the gasoline over vollkan's body to burn him alive. The fertilizer was poured over his head in an attempt to muffle his screaming but in reality, it only served to quicken the death as vollkan was unable to breathe beneath the heavy pile. And the alcohol swabs? vollkan was carrying a bunch of those in his trusty doctor's bag during the night.

"Those monsters," spoke one of you, finally.

The board supporting the noose that you all used to hang people on was a staple in Nito City for more than five centuries. Countless people died at the hands of a mob's mentality by way of the noose; maybe that's why this city's numbers have dwindled so low to the amount that it has today. It's pretty damn barbaric. In any case, Sando's lifeless body hung quietly... well, almost quietly. The sickening, creaking sound made by the board as he swayed slightly back and forth was almost enough to make even the healthiest, most sane person go mad.

Maybe it was the "HERE! I HAVE FREE COOKIES!" offer that made you suspicious of Sando. I mean... offering cookies? Only scum would do that, right? Nah. Heh, anyone who offers me cookies is a saint.

There's usually a bit of a... ritual, if you will, that you guys follow after hanging someone at the gallows. Somewhere near the start of the next morning, you simply take down the body and bury it as long as it was an honest member of the town. If it was scum, you cut the body up and use it as fertilizer for the plants. Gruesome but interesting.

With Sando, you didn't get a chance to do either one because almost as soon as daybreak came, you guys were busy hanging a brand new rope for Erg0's head. Erg0 was so terrified about being next to Sando's decaying body that he actually jumped into the noose on his own and strangled himself to death. At least he was scum though. And at least the plants will get some nice, refreshing food. They were beginning to wither away.

Pretty much all of you woke up extra early this morning for the post-lynch "ritual". I mean, you were kinda behind on it since Sando was still just hanging there in rotting, so it made sense to finally give him an honest funeral and to get chopping (in this case, literally) with Erg0's body. Those plants weren't gonna feed themselves, now were they? It was pretty damn early to be doing all of this but hey, it had to be done.

The only person who didn't seem to show up was Sotty7, but you all knew she was always a bit of a sleeping-in type of person anyway. This time though she seemed a bit later than usual. When you decide to go check on her, you find her house completely in shambles. There were tables overturned, dishes broken, and cabinets/wardrobes tossed everywhere like rag dolls. When you reached her bedroom, you all almost knew what you'd see. There, on the bed, was Sotty7 lying face down in a puddle of blood. On her dresser was an ID for a hot Night club in town. Sotty7 was a Dancer... err, I mean she was a Roleblocker.

The graveyard was getting rather full. Everytime a new townie was buried there after being lynched, you all would use the fence that surrounded the yard to carve another "l" symbol to keep the tally of deaths in town. And when you guys completed hanging Zajnet only to realize he didn't have a single evil thing on him, you all realized the tally would once again have to go up by another l. It was getting pretty sickening. Just then, a thought came to one of you:

"Do you guys remember that dog that we saw on the first day of all this madness? What did we end up doing with its body?"

"Hm... I don't think we did anything with it," spoke another of you. "Let's check the spot out to see if it's still there."

"That can wait until tomorrow. I'm off to bed."

It was morning time. Time to investigate what happened to that damn dog. When you all arrived at the scene of where it all happened, you don't see the dog's body anywhere. It was almost as if the dog vanished into thin air. What you do find is a note that reads as follows:

Walk 100 yards east. Turn at a 90 degree angle to the right. Walk 20 yards south until you reach the spot marked with an X.

"What the hell is this?" shouted one of you.

Either way, you all begin to do what the instructions said to do. When you arrive at the destination, you're all horrified by the sight - Jack was lying on his back in a huge puddle of blood, his body completely riddled with his bullets. Even more frightening was the fact that his arms and legs were outstretched in the shape of an "X" just like the instructions said. A quick check of his pulse revealed that he was dead.

"Those monsters," whispers one of you.

Final Mod Flavor

The end was coming nearer and nearer. It could be felt all around the town. I mean, the days were getting colder, the nights were getting even colder than that, and the town's numbers were dwindling sharply. Even though there wasn't a death last night, it was blatantly obvious that WHATEVER it was that was being warned about from the dog's note was extremely close to sealing the deal by finishing off the last few members of the town.

The last day seemed to have the least finger-pointing and accusations oddly enough. It really came down to two suspects: Porochaz and MagnaofIllusion. MagnaofIllusion was quick to claim that he couldn't have be a member of the evil mafia because he was hiding during the nights. Correction: he was hiding only on the even-numbered nights since the killings began. When asked why he only chose the even nights, he replied saying that since the first night had no death he figured the evil forces only wanted to kill during the even-numbered nights. Shady story but you all seemed to believe it. Porochaz was a bit less convincing. He was hung almost instantly and was found to be town.

Once again the night came - would there be a death tonight? The sad thing was there wasn't just one death this night. No. There were two. MagnaofIllusion bound up boberz and Locke Lamora using rope and hauled them to the town square. Just to show his appreciation, he decided to only use one bullet to kill the two of them. He stood them up back to back and let out a single bullet from his gun. The bullet pierced through boberz' heart, exited his back, and then pierced through Locke Lamora's back and through his heart also. A perfect shot by MOI. And that was the end of it.



....as for the dog. Well, after the final two killings, MagnaofIllusion decided to walk home. On his way home, he saw something on his porch. It was a pair of glowing blue eyes and what he thought was the outline of a dog's body. Then he heard barking and realized that it really WAS a dog. But as he got closer and closer, he became less sure - the eyes got dimmer and dimmer until the strange, evil flickering just went out completely. The dog seemed to vanish into thin air. When Magna got inside his house, he breathed a sigh of relief thinking that he was just imagining things until he felt a sharp pain running down his left leg. When he lifted up his pant leg to see where the pain was coming from, he noticed a nice, fresh pair of bite marks. Nothing inside the house indicated that a dog was there.

Thanks to everyone for playing. I think this game was somewhat frustrating for me as a mod. There were times that the game just seemed to drag because of low activity levels or various V/LA periods. I thought the two week deadlines would help make sure everyone was pretty active and would prevent the game from going into a lull, but I guess that didn't really help. I think that was partly the reason town lost here.

MVP choices for me would probably be MOI for the scum team and Sotty7 for the town team. Wrt to MOI, I could imagine all of the blocked NKs and missing Daytime actions getting really frustrating but somehow he kept up his resolve and played a good game. I was confused by the claim though - I really thought that was going to end up costing him the game. I thought he could have won the game just by using a Vanilla claim instead.

Does anyone have any comments on the balance or anything else? I know there were a lot of comments about the Goon Cop - I threw that in there because I thought it was a pretty decent alternative to a regular Cop. I considered it a Normal role because I remember mith used it in his /in-vitational last year which was run in the New York subforum. You can see in the role PM now just what specific results it would get.

Oh, I just noticed the balance comments on the last page. I could see why some said it looked town-sided, but I really think the Daytime Rolecop is a strong enough role to counteract the town's powers especially since it couldn't ever be roleblocked (since it worked during the Day), and it would let the scum get a much better idea as to who to kill during the Night. You figure the town lynches someone during the Day so you get a role flip from that, maybe another person is forced to claim since they got to L-1 so you get a role from that, and if the Rolecop cops a completely different person, you pretty much know 3 roles right there. In this case it didn't get much good use though since the people who had the role (aside from Erg0) didn't submit any actions.

I roleblocked Zach/Jason on night one. When there was no kill I thought I blocked it hence the 1000% increase on pushing Jason. I think I made a passing comment about it as well something like "It will all be clear soon" since I thought I would have to claim to get people on to this wagon. Thankfully it didn't come to that and Vollkan ended up being a weak doc which was pretty funny.

Haha, I don't think I'd ever be able to play Mafia with my girlfriend. I'd be all "aww baby I don't wanna lynch youuuuuuuuu" even if she was scummy as hell. It must be trickier when you're married though. :P
