Mini 50 (Newer York Confidential) Game Over!

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Thu Aug 07, 2003 3:32 pm

Post by mneme »

Newer York, a quiet town. Actually, it's never been quiet -- Newer York has always had
mafia. But things haven'g been this violent for a while. Recently, there's been a rush of mafia killings, so the citizens of Newer York have decided to get together, and kill their own, Until the Killings Stop

Alive (4)

JazzRed (Clyde, Carnegie Mafia Mason)
Fishbulb (Captain Neighbor, Good Cop)
Riven (Lois, Reporter)
Someone (replaceing jasonpingpong) (Bonnie, Carnegie Mafia Mason)

Dead (8)

Tigris (Lt. Niceguy, Bad Cop): Killed by a lone asssassin on night 1
PolarBoy (Captain Happy, Crooked Cop): Pulverized by several machine gunners on night 1
PbUG (Sticks, Symphony Mafia Bodyguard/Doctor), lynched by the town on day 1
Rite(Shards, Thief): Killed by a lone assassin on night 2
CoolBot(Jenny, Researcher): Killed by a mafia-style assassination on night 3
glsamm(Sergeant Friendly, Bad Cop): Lynched by the town
FinalFear (Police Chief Goodman, -Very- Bad Cop): Killed by Night Stalker
Night Stalker (replacing Viarostultega): Blown to bits by FinalFear

Rules [stolen shamelessly from MeMe]

* Votes must be in bold. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted.
* Please be attentive and unvote, if necessary, before casting a new vote. This is not required, but I?d appreciate it.
* Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, his pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be unheeded. You may vote: no lynch ? majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death.
* The game is not to be discussed outside of the thread unless your role specifically states that you may do so.
* Once your death scene has been posted, you?re dead. Stop typing.
* Don't edit/delete previously submitted posts
* If you have a night choice to make, it is due by the posted deadline. I will not wait for you ? if you do not submit a choice to me, tough! No choice will be made.
* If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate ? don?t leave us hanging.
* Remember, it?s a game. It?s supposed to played. It?s supposed to be fun. Do your part.

The day dawns on a sad day in Newer York. The body of
Tigris(Lt. Niceguy) is found, killed with a clearly professional
single shot to the back of the head.
Additionally, PolarBoy (Captain Happy) is found, as day dawns, in his
bed, with a [NPC] woman known to be a member of the notorious Carnegie Mafia
(also dead). The two are identifiable only by the identification at
the bedside, as both they, the bed, and the back of Happy's bedroom
have been pulverized by the assailant's submachine gun fire. More
evidence at the scene shows that Happy has also been taken bribes, and
he is fired posthumously.

Dead:

Tigris (Lt. Niceguy, Cop): Killed by a lone assassin.
PolarBoy (Captain Happy, Crooked Cop): Pulverized in a machine-gun execution.

This is your moderator.

Note that I'm going on vacation from tomorrow morning to next Tuesday, and -probably- won't have net access during that period.

Therefore, it is quite likely that if Newer York reaches a lynch point before I return, that it will have an extended twilight.

(Sorry about this, but there it is; consider this an anti-deadline :)

As the town scrambles around, looking for mafia, the citizens are bemused by
two citizens, PBuG and Jazzred, confessing to -be- mafia. The two, apparently
members of rival mafia families, immediately set to bickering, as the town
watches with intrest.

Finally, PBug loses the argument, and the town quickly finds a lampost and
hangs him from it, then searches his corpse. On it is a Symphony Mafia
membership card, business cards reading "bodyguard for hire", and
conspiciously, no deadly weaponry.

Pbug (Sticks, Symphony Mafia Bodyguard), has been lynched by the town.

It is now NIGHT. Send in your choices ASAP.
[if everyone gets their choices in by midnight, I'll try to start a new day
before going on vacation, otherwise it will wait until when I get back]

As Day 2 breaks, only one body is found -- of rite (Shards, Thief), who was
murdered by a lone gunman while still carrying the results of his latest
burgalry home.

It is DAY.

As the morning moves into full heat (and the mod posts from Mexico),
various copies of
The Newer York Times
appear on the streets.
On page 1, the following story stands out:

This newspaper received an anonymous tip-off just before night 1 that Fishbulb may have been involved in plans to kill. Here at the Newer York Times we take these such tip-offs very seriously, so we set out to follow Fishbulb, only to find he spent the night alone, and was seen to be doing nothing very suspicious at all.

The Reporter.

Having examined the game and the current state, I've decided that the "no quoting the mod" rule is unnecessary (and even actively harmful) to this particular game, and so have (irrespecitve of whether there have been any violations of this rule) removed it retroactively.

I cannot confirm or deny anything about night choices, obviously.
[but can confirm that Nightstalker joined the game about 8 hours before I got onto a plane, and 16 before the NE went black].

After an exiting day, with all members of the town claiming "pro-town" roles, most citizins decide that things are simply too confusing, and go home without chosing to lynch anyone.

It is now night.

The sun rises on a happier, friendlier Newer York. The birds are singing,
the bees are stinging, and the citizens are happier and less confused than
ever before.

Except, that is, for CoolBot(Jenny, Researcher), who is found dead, in City
Hall, having been shot dead with a single shot in the back of the head at
point blank range. There is little sign of a struggle, but evidence shows
that she was held in place before being executed.

In the meanwhile, the Newer York Times has the following front page:

==================================

SECRET CLAN MEETS AT NIGHT

The Newer York Times has discovered the identity of 2 members (Jazzred &
Someone) of a secret clan who met at an undisclosed location during Night 2.

We can only speculate as to the reason this clan is meeting.
Seargent Friendly, when asked for comment, said something that sounded like
"Pank. Pank. Pank."

A confident Captain Neighbour was heard to exclaim "We will get to the bottom
of this tonight. You can't kill all of us."

The Reporter (Riven)

Nightstalker finally joins the lynch mob, and gslamm is killed.

On him are found his badge (Seargent Friendly), and his gun.
However, no evidence (aside from Riven's testimony) is found that links him to the previous night's murder.

It is now Night (get your choices in!)

Before dawn, a Newer York paper is distributed which reads:

============================================================

KILLER COP CAUGHT IN THE ACT

A Newer York Times reporter unwittingly stumbled onto a murderous secret yester\day when he witnessed a policeman with a city employee just moments before she \was brutally murdered, in a mafia-style execution.

The reporter had noticed Seargent Friendly acting in a suspicious manner
and decided to follow him after dark. He saw Seargent Friendly with
Jenny Coolbot, and in the morning she was dead in the Town Hall.

Jenny Coolbot was a Researcher for the City Council.

No physical evidence was found linking Seargent Friendly to the murder, but the\ eye-witness account was damning.

We believe that one murderer remains at large.

These murderers may also have been behind the cold-blooded execution of Captain\ Happy, the only other unsolved recent murder.

============================================================

However, this paper is quickly recalled, and the hot off the presses new
morning headline reads: [yes, the entirety of the remainder of this
section is written by Riven, who I "leaked" the results]

LEAD STORY:
R.I.P. POLICE CHIEF GOODMAN (FinalFear) --- FABLED NEWER YORK COP DIES
DEFENDING CITY FROM ORGANISED CRIME!

Our respected Police Chief (FinalFear) died last night in a hail of
bullets at a known Symphony mafia hideout.

The Mayor later released this statement: We will rid Newer York of
this scourge. FinalFears death will not have been in vain

IN OTHER NEWS:
REPORTER LEAVES THE TIMES

Our long-serving reporter, Lois Riven, has resigned. She has been
offered a new job of coffee lady and part-time column writer at Hush
Hush magazine.

Story found in Hush Hush Magazine later that week:

There are a million stories in the city, and all of them will raise your eyebro\ws and curl your hair. . . Heres one of them:

I followed our Police Chief, FinalFear the night he was killed. He
went to a known mafia address and I noticed he was carrying packages
and was placing them at strategic points around the house. I crouched
behind a tree and watched him. Suddenly I saw a shadow moving towards
him. . . I looked closer, it was Nightstalker. He had a gun and it was
pointed at FinalFear.

Nightstalker hissed. "Its over. Your murdering cop buddies Tigris and
gslamm are dead. And pretty soon youll be dead too. "

FinalFear laughed. "You dont want me dead. I can help you with your
crime rackets. You have no idea the influence I have around here. I
even got that meddling reporter fired from the Times. "
Nightstalker replied in a cool voice, "Fired, huh?"
And with that, Nightstalker emptied the contents of his gun into
FinalFears chest.

Too late, Nightstalker noticed the flashing light of the detonation
device as it counted down to zero. . .

BOOM!

My clothes and hair were singed in the explosion but I carried on to
FinalFears house. I wanted proof, otherwise no-one would believe
me. Well I didnt find any. . . yet. But dont worry, Im on the case.

Remember, dear readers, you heard it here first, off the record, on
the Q.T. and very Hush-Hush

========================================

Game over -- Town wins!

The simpler (and less, um, dressed up) explaination of what went down
last night:

Fishbulb (Captain Neighbor, Good Cop) and Riven (Lois, Reporter) both followed
FinalFear (Police Chief Goodman), who attempted to murder Nightstalker
(Spike, Symphony Mafia Enforcer) (via rigging his house to explode).
Meanwhile, Nightstalker targetted FinalFear with his
Enforcer/Vigilante kill. Goodman was fatally shot (in the back of the
head, though who's to contradict Lois's account...except for Neihbor/Fishbulb,
whom she didn't see -also- watching the final face-off), but not
before he could detonate the house.

Roles (and sequence of nights) to follow.
Did I say too much?

You are Chief Goodman, head of the Gotham police force.

This city is rotten to the core. Half your citizens are crooks and mafia, the
other half are nebishes, corrupt as the rest.

But you have found a way to fix this.

Kill all the crooks, make it look like mafia killings, and you should be able
to -eliminate- crime in this town (along with most of the prominent citizents,
but we all have to make sacrifices).

Your police force has five members:
Yourself (leader of your gang)
Lt NiceGuy (part of your gang)
Sergeant Friendly (part of your gang)
Captain Neighbor
Captain Happy

Each night, determine who to kill; the three of you will gun down your target
and make it look like a mafia kiling.

You win if all bad guys and witnesses (ie, all other players) are
dead.

[Basically...in this game, the cops -are- the mafia. Just rememember, you may
not be the only bad guys out there, after all, the town -is- full of crooks,
you know. You're just trying to make it safe for everyone -- except the
corpses, of course.]

==============================================================

You are Lt Niceguy, Bloodthirsty Cop.

You want to stop crime. Chief Goodman says the best way to stop crime is to
kill the criminals, and that makes sense to you just fine.

His plan is to kill all the crooks and make it look like mafia killings, so
that's what you've been doing, along with Sergeant Friendly.

Each night, determine who to kill; the three of you will gun down your target
and make it look like a mafia kiling. If there's a tie on who to kill, Goodman
wins; if he's dead, you win; if you're dead, Friendly gets to make the
decision.

There are also two other cops in the game, Captains Neighbor and Happy.

=============================================================

You are Sergeant Friendly, Vengeful Cop

You're a good cop. You really are. But you've seen far too many bad guys get
away in the court system, and your attempts to make sure they didn't have
escalated from brutal interrogations, to shooting criminals outright
(and planting pistols on them afterwards) to what you've been doing
most recently.

Along with your cop buddies Sargeant Friendly and Police Chief
Goodman, you've been killing crooks and making it look like mafia
killings.

Each night, determine who to kill; the three of you will gun down your target
and make it look like a mafia kiling. If there's a tie on who to kill, Goodman
wins; if he's dead, NiceGuy wins; if he's dead, you get to make the
decision.

There are also two other cops in the game, Captains Neighbor and Happy.

================================================================

Captain Neighbor, Sane Cop

You're a good cop. You know you are. But lately, there have been brutal
mafia executions every night, and you haven't been able to stop it.

It't not like there aren't a lot of cops in this town -- there are; five of
them:
Police Chief Goodman
Captain Happy
Lt NiceGuy
Sergeant Friendly
And yourself.

But this hasn't seemed to stop the killings; maybe if you can get together with
some of your cop buddies, you can figure out what's going on.

Goal: Make sure the mafia murders cease.

You have two abilities:
Research: You may research a player, and find out their background.
Legwork: You may follow a player around, and get clues of their nighttime activities this way.

Mod's note:

There were a few things about this role that the player didn't know.

First, because of the nature of the game, the first ability was -basically- a red herring -- since seven out of the 12 players had reversed roles, it was effectively "verify a lousy claim", with some ability to sniff out the harmless-seeming roles (though...you never know...), but no
real good/evil detection. However, the second ability was a "real" cop ability.

Second, the first time the character was targetted by the Bad Cops, they would be unable to kill him, but they -would- find out his role [he's a good cop, so it takes them two nights to
be able to steel themselves to the ugly deed]. This was why GSLAMM was able to claim "cop" as effectively as he was, and why there was no kill on Night 2.

Third, he's not a "Sane Cop", though he is. He's a Good Cop...but reveal this to the player, and things are likely to come out too early.

================================================

Captain Happy, Crooked Cop

You're a cop. But not a very good one; you long ago got (literally) "in bed"
with the Carnegie mafia.

You could investigate the recent killings, but you're too busy being corrupt
right now. You'll vote on who to lynch, like a good honest citizen, though.

Also, you're still getting paid off by the Carnegie Mafia, and they still seem to slip occasional notes into your payoffs; you don't have a way of
contacting them, though.

Goal: Survive to the end of the game.

Mod's note: This is basically a "townie with a twist" - he doesn't even get to know whether the Carnegie Mafia is good or evil, or who they are, for that matter. However, unbeknownst to the player, this is also a backup cop for Fishbulb (this was probably a mistake, if very thematic - with his immunity to one Cop kill, Fishbulb doesn't need a backup). Fortunately, he was killed off on night 1, so I didn't have to answer for this one. [actually, what I should have done is given him a single vig kill if Fishbulb got killed off; that is cute, but by no means over-powerful]
Note that his "when targetted" abilty was rather the inverse of Fishbulb's -- as a cop on the "Take", the Bad Cops end up uncontrollably spraying him with bullets, shocked at the corrutption in their midst.

===================================================================

Bonnie, Carnegie Mobster

You're a mobster, but you sure aren't a killer; you used to pay people
to do that; these days, you mostly just live off your ill-gotten gains.

At least, you will if nobody kills you first. That would be a bad thing; it
would be really nice to get the other mafia in town, the Symphony mafia, who
are probably behind the recent murders.

You can talk to the other Carnegie mobster (JazzRed, Clyde) at night, and you
know he isn't behind the killings.

Also, there's a cop who's on your payroll, Captain Happy. You talk to him --
he doesn't talk to you. (send me an email at night and I'll forward it on to
Captain Happy, whoever he is).

Goal:

You win if the TOWN survives.

[IOW, the Carnegie mob is a pro-town mason group, despite being a "mafia"].

=========================================================

Clyde, Carnegie Mobster

You're a mobster, but you sure aren't a killer; you used to pay people
to do that; these days, you mostly just live off your ill-gotten gains.

At least, you will if nobody kills you first. That would be a bad thing; it
would be really nice to get the other mafia in town, the Symphony mafia, who
are probably behind the recent murders.

You can talk to the other Carnegie mobster (jasonpingpoing, later Someone, AKA Bonnie) at night, and you know he isn't behind the killings.

Also, there's a cop who's on your payroll, Captain Happy. You talk to him --
he doesn't talk to you. (send me an email at night and I'll forward it on to
Captain Happy, whoever that is).

Goal:

You win if the TOWN survives.

[IOW, the Carnegie mob is a pro-town mason group, despite being a "mafia"].

====================================================================

Sticks, Symphony Mafia Bodyguard

You're in the mafia, sure.
But you don't kill people; in fact, you provide...protection.
You're not actually a bad person, and you certainly aren't behind the
recent rash of killings. In fact, you want to stop them. By whatever means
necessary, including wiping out the Carnegie mafia, who probably -is- behind
the killings.

Each night, you -may- target another player to guard. If they are targetted
by a killing role, they will not die (or even know they were targetted or
saved). If someone is targetted by more killers than guards or doctors,
they will still die, however.

Your goal is to stop the murderers.

===============================================================

Spike, Symphony Mafia Enforcer

You're in the mafia, sure.
And, ok, yes, you kill people.
But you're not actually a bad person, and you certainly aren't behind the
recent rash of killings. In fact, you want to stop them. By whatever means
necessary, including wiping out the Carnegie mafia, who probably -is- behind
the killings.

Each night, you -may- chose another player to kill. [Vigilante]

Your goal is to stop the murderers.

======================================================

Jenny, Researcher

You're a researcher, working in City Hall. You're not sure how you got
involved in this mess, but here you are, voting on who to kill, in order
to stop some murdering Mafia who Might Get You Next.

Ability:

Each night, you can Research a player, and find out whether they are a
Criminal, a Cop, or an Ordinary Citizen. It's easy enough to do, since
you've got all the city records to look in.

Goal:

Stop the murderers!

========================================================

Lois, Reporter

You're just an ordinary reporter, just trying to get a good story, and get
the word out. Not getting killed by the mafia whle doing it would be a nice
bonus, though (and stopping the killings is probably the best way to go
about this).

You already know that there are two mafias in town -- the Symphony mob and the
Canarsie mafia; the question is which one (or both) is doing the killings.

Each night, you -may- investigate one player; and find one person they were
with that night. You don't get to know what they were doing with them, though.

Additionally, you may Publish -- submit a story during the night, and it will
appear in the next Day's paper -- anonymously! (you must do this before
recieving this night's investigation results, however).

You win if you survive the game. Stopping the killers would be a nice
bonus, though.

=========================================================

Shards, Thief

You are a thief. You don't kill people (in fact, you'd really rather
the killing stop), but then, you don't like the cops much, either. Still,
they are trying to stop the killings, so they can't be all bad.

Ability:

Each night, you may attempt to rob someone's house. If they are home, you
will find this out and leave their house alone (robbing a neibhor's house
instead); if they are not home, however, you will be able to rob their house.

Goal:

Survive the game.

I may post more of my stuff (the various night choices and results of same) tomorrow, but
It's gotten way late, and I've finally done my duty (honestly, I was waiting for Riven, though there was a period between gettign a choice from Nightstalker and sending a summary Rivenward for him to do a closer article where I got lame.

I hope everyone enjoyed the game!

You bet it was -- that was intended to be one of the balancing factors on their side, though I'd intended the rather public clue that there were 5 cops -- more than you'd expect for a "normal" game, to have been a bit of a clue.

Ayup. I still think that was a brilliant use of the lost kill, all things considered.
