VP Baltar wrote:@crypto - what is your opinion about this setup and what do you think is the optimal strategy?
I haven't put much thought to it. Given the types of town power roles I see no reason to treat the game much differently—i.e., adopt peculiar strategies—than you would treat a mainstream open or normal game.

Two things catch my eye:
  1. The randomly generated lynch mechanic. I've been in a few games with rushed lynches and even, IIRC, no-lynches due to lapses in either activity or decisiveness. It's maddeningly bad enough in games with standard lynch mechanics. If it happens here then I will be furious.
  2. The prohibition of players on the guillotine to vote. I'm wondering if the mod would allow basic forms of communication via customization of the vote text; e.g., an underlined vote represents a town read, a capitalized vote represents a scum read, an italicized vote urges a return of attention to the voted player's last post.
Concission wrote:Why ask only crypto?
Because I can single-handedly blow a game by way of harebrained setup speculation.

@LuckayLuck
, why don't you think Antitown is just joking around for the sake of joking around?

@VP Balter
and
@Concission
, how does disagreement over Mafia theory justify a vote?

No, they do not. I don't know where crypto drew that, but you definitely do vote as normal the day you're on guillotine. Note that this "bumps LYLO up a day", in effect. If there are 9 living players total and three of them are scum with a non-scum on guillotine, and they place a townie on guillotine that day, I would then call the game for the scum.
Er, I meant prohibition to post other than a vote. My bad.

I don't understand your last post...

I think you may be seriously underestimating the competence of the Mafia and the amount of time and effort it really takes to diagnose a small and relatively simple open setup.

God fucking damn it. I was under the impression from the wiki that the player on the guillotine could vote but not post but looking back at Hitorogoshi's activity rule it looks like he can post, too.

@Mod, the on-guillotine player can both post and vote, confirm or deny.

The Batman, of course, is a metaphor for players who don't fall under the aforementioned category.

We'll start with Alamanatee.

    5. Opposes VPB's vote on Concession; calls Concession town on account of doing something "noobscum" wouldn't; states a gut scum read on Simenon; approves Ythill's setup speculation.a
    6. Says that Antitown is scummy, and explains why, after asked his opinion of Antitown by VPB.b
    7. Reaffirms his Concession-"noobdumb" stance and his opposition to VPB's attacks on Concession;c concludes that Concession is an easy lynch;d hops on the VPB wagon accordingly; approves of Ythill; gently approves of Luckay; hints at a theory that Jarti is lurker scum.e
a Feels frail.
b AGM apparently finds Antitown scummy for concrete reasons, but doesn't say as much
until asked
. That's not how townies think with respect to what they do and don't post.
c The Concession-"noobdumb"-town feels like a flimsy cop-out: lack of effort spiced with a variation on hindsight bias. If AGM is scum then Concession is probably town.
d I roll my eyes violently, and contemplate cutting.
e AGM's exact words: "Jarti seems to fit the profile of the 'lurkerscum' pretty well." Watch this. "Seems . . . fit . . . profile of . . . pretty well." Don't know about you guys, but to me it smells an awful lot like AGM fears of taking a stance and/or has a vested interest in keeping his options open.

So you just want to force someone who you don't even have a remotely strong scum read on to claim (truly pro-town), for kicks and giggles, instead of diverting onto a better target.

No, I didn't think you were calling for a claim. I meant that he would claim regardless of what you wanted, because it's standard procedure for a player to claim when put at L-1. Regardless of whether or not you wanted a claim, you, as one of the players putting him at L-1, would have been the reason for his imminent claim
despite your lack of interest in lynching him
. Why force a player to out his role when you don't even think he's scum? This is anti-town. Scummy? Not sure yet.

Durr, somewhere along the line I conflated not pushing an alternate wagon with actually being on the L-1 wagon.

Okay, I think my point still stands, though it's a lot weaker. Not pushing an alternate wagon and expressing satisfaction with the L-1 wagon despite not wanting to lynch the L-1 wagon target and not wanting the L-1 wagon target to claim is anti-town, and since it does nothing to stop the lynch, it potentially sets up for you to play the "I was right" card on D2, etc., etc.

AGM
's first wall had me seriously doubting my scum read on him. Upon reread, I'm not seeing anything that actually distinguishes him as a townie. I still dig the mental image of his head in a hoop.
FOS: AGM.

Percy
continues to be a nonentity.

Jarti
has that smug unfettered snipe-from-the-sidelines air that I find people with too much information often have. He's also playing the "Look at me; I am the epitome of recklessly simpleminded town and I'm totally un-self-conscious of my untrustworthy play style!" card really,
really
hard.
FOS: Jarti.

I feel like
Coyo
puts way more effort into exposing Simenon-scum than actually pushing for Simenon's lynch. Considering he's so fiercely anti-Simenon, I'm surprised he doesn't push harder for Simenon's lynch. Something to mull over.

I've been leaning
Fate
-town but I'm not remotely sold. I think that time and time alone will enable me to produce a reliable read on him. (Night kill bait goes here.)

GlaDOS
looks town as hell, but as a rule I try to be wary of replacements who read and type up catchup analyses before reading their role PM.

Taken at face value,
Balto
's play is ruthlessly pro-town. Do not take this statement to imply anything. I'm as wary as him as everyone else, but only on an intuitive level.

Concission
is lurking hard. It's also worth noting that the sky is blue. For some reason I was waffling on my read on her. But looking back at her text walls, I don't see so much as a semblance of scum hunting, and truly insightful comments are few and far between. Nothing she's said looks like there's much if any honest inquisitiveness to it.
FOS: Concission.

Shadow Dancer
means nothing to me. Some of the things he says rub me as scummy, but at other junctures my gut tells me he's a false lead.

Take away his scummy buddy-buddy style and
LuckayLuck
doesn't look too bad. Some of the things he says, and the timing of some of his observations and stances, indicate a town thought process. He's been forced to spend a lot of energy defending himself. I'd kill to see less of that and more analysis of other players; I think that's the key to deciphering his motives.

Ythill
is town.

Zoraster
's second post—his catchup analysis—looked town. Since then he's done nothing pro-town. He doesn't take stances, doesn't interact with other players, and doesn't produce reads. This brings me back to my point about wariness of replacements who read the game and type up their catchup analyses before opening their role PMs.
FOS: zoraster.

Simenon
—whateva, man.

Four FOSes for three scum. Swell. We should lynch between AGM, Concission, Jarti, and zoraster today.

Unvote. Vote: Concission.

So down with this.
You be quiet.
Fate wrote:When did Glados say he read before he read his role PM? Thats akin to cheating and lame as fuck
He didn't say that. As someone who's done it once or twice, I'm saying that I suspect a decent number of other players do it as well. I don't think reading the game and taking notes or typing up your first post before receiving your PM is cheating.

We are lynching Concission today barring something extraordinary. Saddle up, bichez.

Concission's back-from-the-grave alphabet soup wall does absolutely NOTHING for me. At least AGM's had some fire to it.

@Anyone opposing a Concission lynch
, I challenge you to read Concission's latest posts—hell, her whole iso.—and tell me EXACTLY WHAT SHE IS TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH. Where are the signs of town-motivated thought processes? In 503 she smears suspicion on zoraster ("Scums make mistake sometimes without realizing it, and Zoraster's post looked hastily written" . . . what the total fuck?), attacks Balto first with mockery and then with scummy rhetoric ("Sure Percy can be left out as misguided townie so that you could convince him otherwise"), and rebuts Simenon.

WAIT. HOLD THE PHONE.
Concession (post 503) wrote:Sure Percy can be left out as misguided townie so that you could convince him otherwise.
@CONCESSION
, ON A SCALE OF ZERO TO ONE HOW CONFIDENT WOULD YOU SAY YOU ARE THAT BALTO IS AS CERTAIN THAT PERCY HAS A TOWN-ALIGNED ROLE AS YOU ARE? ALSO, WOULD YOU CALL YOURSELF A MORAL CONSEQUENTIALIST OR DO YOU BELIEVE IN NATURAL/INALIENABLE MOD-GIVEN RIGHTS?

Onward and upward to post 507, where she fails to follow up on her sideways potshot from the sidelines at zoraster (I'll be looking hard at zoraster if she flips scum), spews some nonsense about GLaDOS, and fires some awesomely sinister rhetoric at Simenon ("Simenon is probably on to save his scummy ass so I don't blame him much"). The post is sloppy and looks hastily written; of course, this isn't scummy in and of itself, but recall that she used the same reasoning to stir the zoraster pot.

So here's a compilation of Concission's reads with 507 in the bag:
Stated scum reads

Simenon
VP Baltar

Scummy enough to take a brief jab at!

zoraster

"Surreptitious" (lol, whateva that means)

GlaDOS
Fate
RedCoyote

"Better" (way to keep those options open, maaan

AlmasterGM

Stated town reads

N/A

Town reads unstated but able to be inferred from 503 (lololol)

Percy

???

crypto
Ythill
Shadow Dancer
LuckayLuck
Jarti

Names that don't show up in Concession's iso.

Jarti
Shadow Dancer (excluding one post)

Let's condense this, just for funsies:
Stated scum reads:
Simenon, VP Baltar.
Stated suspects:
GlaDOS, RedCoyote, Fate.
Stated town reads:

Who's left:
crypto, Ythill, Shadow Dancer, AlmasterGM, LuckayLuck, Jarti, Percy.
Five suspects and no stated town reads? Yeah. Bullshit.

RedCoyote wrote:This is a good point. crypto, is this the angle you're coming at VPB with? I hadn't really considered this, although I did seriously have a problem with VPB backing off of Sim at the time.
Here's the deal with VP Baltar. Rationally speaking, he has been overwhelmingly pro-town—that it to say, in this case, overwhelmingly town. I agree with a
lot
of what he says. His outrage, when it emerges, looks honest (the town kind of honest), and as far as I'm concerned that point is indisputable. The only thing that bothers me is that he's buddied up me a bit too much for my liking, though I'll grant that, in general, the sources and content of his buddying seem transparently town. But that's not nearly enough for me to turn on him, especially in a game like this where the town is running itself in mental circles and a lot of players are doing and saying a lot of ridiculous, let alone scummy, things.

So: I didn't have an angle. My vote was a reaction test as well as a shot in the arm of my own play because lately I've been feeling incredibly anemic and uninvested. It produced something fishy (in my eyes) from Fate. It also produced a non-reaction from VPB, which doesn't do my town read on him any good since I'm wary that, as someone who seems to firmly understand my style of play after just one or two games, he knew that it was a test. But like the buddy-buddy issue, that's more a question mark than a reason for me to really suspect him.

Bleh, collecting my thoughts. Today's no-nos for the guillotine: VP Baltar, Vigilante Ventriloquist, GLaDOS (teehee) ... more later.

VPB wrote:The thing is that when I have a strong town read, I'm not afraid to simply say so.
All right. I've had scum tell me this before, but it still makes sense from an objective standpoint. Null point, then.

Okay, continuing my interrupted post.

Today's no-nos for the guillotine: VP Baltar, Vigilante Ventriloquist, GLaDOS, Jarti.

None of those—other than GLaDOS, obv.—are utterly confident town reads. Jarti looks overall town but meh, VPB looks town but I'm still wary, and while VV looks really good I've been flip-flopping a lot on his predecessor. But they're still stupid lynches today as far as I'm concerned.

So ...

Fate
Shadow Dancer
RedCoyote
LuckayLuck
Concission
zoraster
AlmasterGM

I'm having a hard time reading Fate and Shade because the content they produce doesn't do much for me.
  • Shade really hasn't been taken strong stances and seems not to do much scum hunting, but I'm just not seeing a
    S
    C
    U
    M
    H
    E
    R
    E
    ,
    C
    C
    S
    ?
sign hanging over his head. Whateva, I should be paying more attention to him.
@Anyone with a town read on Shade
, wanna go into more detail for me? I wish I had gotten to this earlier because Simenon ought to have had more to say about him if asked.

Several things Fate's done seem town motivated, especially on emotional levels. On the other hand, the two-lines-till-lylo could well be a cop-out and a lot of his play looks uncharacteristically unambitious.
RedCoyote and LuckayLuck go together for the Iron Curtains of text.
  • On a purely logical level, LuckayLuck seems totally town motivated, and his industriousness is very impressive even if I disagree with a ton of what he spouts. The only chink in that layer of armor is the way he presented his (offsite) meta, which was totally fucked up. I still haven't poked around his meta (shame on me, etc.) so I'm still sitting on the fence with respect to the way he talks. Blah, blah.

I remember thinking somewhere that RedCoyote dropped a decent town tell and I've forgotten where it was, which makes me pissed off that I haven't been taking real notes. I'll have to reread him and he's probably not as hard as I think he is to get a handle on, but I
    have better thinks to
    confess to laziness.
Concission goes with no one because—
  • —lololol.
AlmasterGM and zoraster have both produced content, but the vast majority of it looks forced, bland, unimpressive, lackluster, etc.
  • I think AGM is pretty scummy. Sure, could be a townie who's coasting because he just couldn't sink his teeth into the game, but IIRC he's been jumping at easy wagons, lynches, etc., way too much for my liking.

Zoraster looked town when he showed up and his catchup analysis made me think he was going to be an adorably pro-town little townay. Since then: yecch. But where AGM looks to me like scum rather than an apathetic townie, I could definitely see zoraster owning the other side of the coin. Probably could use more analysis with closer attention to substantial interactions with specific other players.
tl;dr
Conk and AGM would STILL BE GREAT! :D <3

AGM's play is pretty goddamn introverted right now. "Tell me why I am scummy—oh, and please excuse me while I ignore recent developments."

Haha, I know exactly what you mean. I honestly didn't mean it that way. I just didn't have anything more to say. You were already on my lynch list.

However.

AGM is still dropping some weird-ass town tells.

Unvote. Vote: zoraster.

THE OBSESSION OF YOU PEOPLE WITH REFUSING TO JUST BUCKLE DOWN AND STICK WITH ONE LYNCHEE IS INFURIATING. HAVE SOME FUCKING BALLS, JESUS CHRIST.

AGM is indiscriminately rabid and SD is Go-Go Gadget Lurkatron-to-Night.

Here is what happens.

1. AGM goes back to L-1.
2. Everyone checks in and states a preference (or lack thereof) between AGM and SD.
3. We lynch accordingly.

If you twats continue to sit with your thumbs up your asses and somehow manage to fail to state a preference, then we lynch AGM.

crypto coasting off of the early town read everyone had on him
Nope, I'm coasting off of burnout.

Zoraster looked intuitively/holistically scummy.

Unvote.
I want a CC. That was a retardedly quick wagon BTW.

I have no idea where I'd put my vote right now barring a CC to zoraster. AGM's shown a lot of what looks to me like town emotion lately.

@Fate
, what did you see that caused you to vote zoraster?

VPB is fishy to me at the moment, but I'll have to reread pretty much all of his iso. in order to work shit out.

Luck, I've tried several times to find a game you were in via the general forum link you provided us about your meta, and I can't find any. I need you to link me a game you played as town and a game you played as scum (offsite) pronto tonto.

@VP Baltar
, if you could I need you to recall an instance where you took a stance on the issue of night kill analysis as a point of Mafia theory.

@Everyone.
Let's assume for argument's sake (and because we're fucked otherwise) that SD was scum. I want to know what people think of Concission's attitude toward him, especially as his lynch drew closer. I have some things I'd like to point out, but I want to see what other people think before I provide any potential point of easy agreement. I want to hear from AGM, Luck, VV, and RC first. Everyone else, please STFU until
all
of those people have answered.

In my search for asdjkfhagjklfdsgh I've been looking at Ythill's contributions. Check this out.

It looks to me like LL's using more propaganda-like rhetoric (which is what's been giving me such pains about him) in this game than he did in the linked game.

Might not get a post in today. Will tomorrow if that's the case.

Quick note: SD's WIFOM ops are absolutely fascinating and I bet there's something to take away from them (especially when taken alongside his iso.).
