wool is in my chests chevre, it takes 3 blocks of it, any color.

just be careful folks. It seems that beds are a bit bugged, and it might be possible for mobs to spawn near you even if you sleep in a well lit area.

I would suggest that if you try out beds, do it somewhere that you don´t mind getting creepered.

I've found an interesting way to farm mob items, at least as long as the bed-occasionally-spawns-monsters bug exists. (It seems to happen more frequently when you're alone on the server. Haven't tested it in Single Player yet.)

1. Create the tiniest chamber possible with a very low roof



2. Place bed. Sleep in it.



3. Did a monster spawn in your tiny area instead of letting you sleep in peace? Great! Watch as its head suffocates in the ceiling. (If you get a spider, it won't suffocate, but it won't be able to move, either. You can punch it to death safely.)



4. ??????

5. PROFIT



Repeat ad nauseum or until morning.

(DISCLAIMER: I don't know if this works on creepers or not yet. You might want to do this in an area you won't miss if it gets blown up.)

EDIT: I think this may have to be done under grass blocks exposed to the open sky, considering I can't seem to get it to happen at all at my other bed. Might do more testing later. Maybe not.

I am exploring the beds in my single player world - I think I may have hit what makes beds safe. Apparently, beds ignore adjacent walls when looking for mobs, so if you place your bed in the center of a well lit room (not touching any walls), mobs shouldnt spawn.

Or at least that is my theory, if anyone would like to help me test that, it would be appreciated.

The wall on the left and the ceiling in the picture I used earlier are indeed one layer thick and exposed to the outside. Sounds like a good theory, and if I get around to playing later today I'll help you test it.

So it turns out you can jump from the very top of the server into 2 blocks of water and survive.

Oh, and if anyone has some lava I could borrow on a permanent-without-any-intent-of-returning basis, that'd be nice.

SAND STONE LAYERS! I was on an adventure and I found some sandstone and I was like...wtf, somebody put this here randomly? I was not aware they added this. Thanks for the clarification.
