I'd think that playing around with music blocks / redstone dust and redstone logic shit / misc building projects would be more than enough to keep someone interested in a game. If someone needs to get some shiny bauble just to do something than I feel sorry for them. It's a sandbox, you can do whatever you ****ing want; why do you need some badge saying "I did X, look at me guys!" to want to play it?

with stats being introduced, achievements will come into being some way whether through mods or officially. the nice thing about them both is that you can ignore them either way, whether it's a button in-game or a thread on the forums
