I'm just now starting to get into more complex board games. Or rather, board games past whatever Hasbro puts out. I've been playing Shadow Hunters for over a year now, and the game is still damn fun every time I play it. I recently purchased the Dominion base set after spending time playing the game on Isotropic... and goddammit, shuffling is a pain in the ass and slows the game WAY down. Any tips for speeding up gameplay in Dominion?

Nuwen recently bought Arkham Horror while we were staying with her for a few days and I really liked it, even though it felt unnecessarily complex.

What are some staple board games? I've heard some people mention Settlers and Puerto Rico as possibilities, but what are some solid games that everyone should have in their collection? (And I don't mean Monopoly and Clue).

I loved that board game back in high school, I think we had like three expansions for it.

I don't really "get" Puerto Rico, but I keep hearing about it.

What's up with all the "everybody is on a team" games? I like games where there's actual competitiveness to it.

Had a huge board game night tonight with Gamma, Grimm, and a couple others. I began by teaching Dominion, but quickly saw the pace wasn't going to do well with the "feel" in the group. We pulled out the Game of Thrones game to learn the rules... we got them okay, but we didn't want to sink 3 hours into it since we had so much to play. I bought Ticket to Ride: Europe today as well, so we played a game. I liked it a lot, though we didn't get to play much. I can see the higher bits o' strategy coming into play, but it'll take a couple more plays to actually get it completely. Also played Cards Against Humanity which is always hilarious, and ended the night with a couple games of Betrayal at House on the Hill.

I think Betrayal at House on the Hill is an amazing game. The 1-against-all bit makes it twice as fun... tonight we got the Tentacle Monster (in which Gamma got owned) and the Crimson Jack SK thing. "Town" won both sets, but the psychological bit of strategy makes the game so enthralling. I think it's my #1 right now.

In Dominion... what would you say is a good setup for a game? The suggested ones don't lead to many "interesting" games, especially the "First Game" one. Gimme something to play that'll make me go "OH SHIT THIS IS WHY DOMINION IS SO AMAZING!"

TBQH, I'm a little "ehhh" looking at Resistance & Cosmic Encounter... thoughts on these games?

Also that Dominion question still stands :)

Hah. Europe is definitely more time-consuming than the base USA map with the tunnels and ferries. I quite enjoyed it on Europe, though I think getting more familiar with the map will make it even more enjoyable. Right now it's a bit overwhelming with how many different routes there are and how long it takes to get places. Why do you dislike the Europe map so much?

new webshow about board games. looks amazing. wil wheaton, felicia day, day9, phil lamarr, morgan webb, the chicks from garfunkle and oates, and a ton of others guest star. it's basically like 'celebrity poker', but with board games.

games played so far include:
Settlers of Catan
The Last Night on Earth
Munchkin
Small World
Alhambra

I posted to Wil's Tumblr to try and convince him to play Arkham Horror in Season 2 for the lulz, but he said each show is strictly limited to around 31 minutes and Arkham Horror far exceeds that range :(

He also said they wouldn't be playing any deck building games because those involve too much internalized strategy that you can't really display outwardly

In post 62, FuDuzn wrote:Jeez, where is the love for Munchkin(I saw Reck just mentioned it, but come on!). Dominion is lots of fun(randomize the choice of cards before you play, becomes quite the bastard deck) and Catan(especially cities and knights) is a cheap thrill, but only Munchkin offers the drunken 'I fucking hate everyone I am playing with' thrills.

Also, anyone play Warrior Knights?

no, Munchkin does not offer "drunken fun"

I can maybe get people to play ONE game of Munchkin before everyone's like GODDAMMIT OKAY SOMETHING ELSE, because it just drags on and on and on. Not to mention I think "I fucking hate everyone I am playing with" isn't exactly a thrill and is only okay if the rest of the game makes up for it (which Munchkin does not). It has about as much strategy and planning in it as Grave Robbers from Outer Space

I can't wait until the end of May as I will actually be able to start picking up some good games again. The collection currently stands at:
Dominion
Munchkin / Super Munchkin
Grave Robbers from Outer Space
Kingsburg
(holy shit this game fucking rules)

Ticket to Ride: Europe
Betrayal at House on the Hill
Arkham Horror (well it's not mine, it's Nuwen's, but she only ever plays it around us...so...)

I really really really kind of want to get house copies of Settlers of Catan and Game of Thrones, but I have a friend who has copies of both so it feels like a waste. Anyone have any old boardgames they want to get rid of? I've got a big ass bookcase just waiting to be filled with them :)

Also kiiiiinda considering rebuying Carcasonne since I've lost several pieces but I've already spent all that money once and don't want to do it again

Do you have a local game shop in your area?

If so, I'd recommend checking out if they have a board game night (most do). Most game shops have a big library of games you can play in the store, so you can try games out before you buy them to see if they fit your tastes.

We kind of split our time between LoL and board games pretty evenly.

I got lucky in the fact that my boyfriend likes to geek out, my roommate likes to geek out, and I happen to live near about eight other Scummers, all of who obviously love to geek out as well. Pretty much, I provide the board games and the playspace, they provide the company (and lots of times, the alcohol).

BSG really isn't that complicated after one playthrough. The turns get this kind of rhythm down to it and it becomes fairly automated.

seriously, the game comes with 130-ish dice and they're all different colors with different symbols on them and feel SO GOOD to roll, especially when that bomb-ass 8/7 monster that has a constant effect of YOUR OPPONENTS MUST PAY 2 ADDITIONAL COST TO SUMMON A MONSTER EACH TURN shows up

I will admit, all three games I've played so far seem to follow the trend of "someone gets ahead and wins the game", but I see no correlation between that and the mechanics. I prefer it to Dominion from an aesthetic standpoint, and from a "dice are more fun than cards" standpoint. I haven't checked out the expansion. I also hardly ever use culling unless I'm REALLY far ahead already.

I also think the amount of glory needed to win is a bit low. With 3 players, it was 15 points... the games are really short and don't give much opportunity for real strategizing (or having a real opportunity for using spells, for example).

Also, the Assistant-Reroll/Portal-DrawTwo combo is just lulzy.

I've also heard good things about Risk 2042 & the Starcraft board game for good war games.

Diplomacy takes like ten hours to play and is much simpler in its rules. Game of Thrones takes about 2-3 hours to play and has complicated rules but once you get it it is a ton of fun. Catan is really shallow in its strategies but is a quick and fun "I have thirty minutes to kill" type game.

Having not played Diplomacy yet I highly recommend GoT.

For the people who have been to BGG.con, is it worth the money? Do they give out free stuff, or what is it like? What do you do at this con? What about this convention makes it worth the $500 for the hotel room and $700 for the plane tickets?

Buhh. It's just not doable for me & Grimm. Plane tickets alone would be $700, then the hotel room would be an extra $600. :( You guys have fun.

The Resistance is really fucking awesome for mafia players and you can even create your own home set for about $7.

Oh, I'd be down for that. It's also possible Grimm & I might not even be in NC anymore by next year's BGG con depending on how my job offers shake out when I graduate this December, so it might be more doable by then anyway (though I'm not thinking Texas is our ideal destination).

Dunno yet, it really depends on job offers. I'm in love with DC, but I don't think a sudden career change into politics would work out well for me (though I do know a handful of lobbyists up there who could probably get me a job). I've actually thought about getting involved in local government & politics for awhile, but I don't think my easy-to-Google internet history would lend itself well to a career in politics.

I've thought about Chicago a lot. I love the place and wouldn't mind moving there. I want to ideally move somewhere that is progressive/LGBT-friendly. I definitely want to live somewhere with a healthy, ecofriendly transportation system. Open to suggestions.

You mean one with a traitor type mechanic in it?

I think The Resistance is probably exactly what you're looking for... but if you want a board game that involves some bluffing, Battlestar Galactica is probably the best. There's a secret "traitor" in the game, nobody knows who it is. About halfway through the game, more cards are dealt out and there's a certain % chance that another traitor gets added to the game as well.

Absolutely. We just bought the Quarmageddon expansion yesterday as well, it adds a LOT to the game. Not to mention, it's nice to have storage options now.

Some of the new creatures are way more balanced, and the new culling rules make it harder for someone to just get a runaway win.

It's worth the 60 bucks. Fantasy Flight is usually really good with customer support, so if your board fucks up they'll usually replace it.

Speaking of FFG -- new game comes out soon called Sky Traders. Thoughts?

YEP THAT WAS ME LAST NIGHT.

I got fucking wrecked by Greyjoy turn one. He took the Golden Sound with a march+0 on TURN FUCKING ONE. I had the perfect plan, too, to take Pyke turn three. So he fucked up my navy, then took Riverrun, then mustered, then jumped his massive fucking army across TWO SEAS to assault Lannisport after telling me "I just wanted the naval position, I'm not trying to fuck with you".

So I lost my capital and retreated towards Harrenhaal. With nothing left to lose, my goal now became "fuck with everyone's shit as much as possible", so I assaulted Tyrell at King's Landing and inflicted three casualties on him, essentially removing him from the game as well. Greyjoy ended up winning.

I basically learned "assaulting your neighbors early can pay off in dividends"

also our Stark derped hard and just let Greyjoy do all of that and ignored him instead of trying to apply pressure from the north

Bought SmallWorld tonight. Highly recommend it... it's not my favorite board game of all time (as that honor still goes to A Game of Thrones), but it's a lot of wacky fun. The game is dead simple, as far as basics go. The "complex" part of learning it comes when you have to learn what each race and each special modifier does, but luckily there's a cheat sheet. While there is obviously some bit of randomness to the game (as far as what races show up as available and what special modifier they're paired with), that randomness is minimized by having to pay more victory points in order to access the newly flipped races.

The strategy of it is largely based around what races to pick up, but a lot of it also has to do with redeployment and figuring out where the threats lie and how to properly reinforce your troops. We just played on the four player map and it took about two hours since we were a little slow on the rules, but I'd image the game would take no longer than 90 minutes once you get it down pat.

Anyone else played it/have any favorite race/class combinations?

We realized Spirit Trolls would be retarded since they'd NEVER GET REMOVED unless conquered and you could just reinforce everything with the troll villages or whatever and have permanent defense.

Sorcerers are GREAT. Absolutely fantastic race, not first turn, but if you pick a shitty early combo (like I did with Merchant Orcs lolwut I'm dumb) then have to go into decline early game, you can pick up Sorcs right when everyone else is spread thin and get three automatic territories each turn with good placement.

Also can I just say flying Amazons are BULLSHIT

Arkham Horror is just "Things Happen to You: The Board Game" where there isn't really any strategy or tactics and it's basically like a roleplaying adventure where the game decides if you live or die.

Not true, actually. It's a combination of risk management, strategy, and luck. There are plenty of things you can do to try to win. I think I have something like a 60%-70% win rate with just the base game at this point.

It really has nothing to do with strategy at all.

"What random location will spawn a gate this turn? Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll open somewhere that's closed. If not, OH WELL, because it's literally impossible to close one gate before the next one spawns unless you're just lucky as shit."

"Let me go to X location to try and get X item/unique item/spell/ability/whatever to help us out... oh wait, I forgot, it's luck of the draw, instead of getting an item, by character just gets fucking murdered instead!"

"What kind of monster will I be fighting? Who knows! The player will literally reach into a cup blindly and pick one at random, so maybe I can beat it, maybe I can't."

No no, I've played enough games of it. Probably ten or more between real life games and playing online.

You can plan long term to a certain extent, after that you're at the mercy of the game. I mean, about as much planning as you can do is, "You take care of that gate, I'll go over here or something and hope something good happens to me".

To be fair, there are other types of "Get Fucked by the Game" type board games that I really enjoy, like Betrayal at House on the Hill, and even Mansions of Madness. I think the difference there is that there's enough variance game to game to warrant multiple playthroughs. In both of those games, you get a different scenario that creates WILDLY different results/outcomes every single time, so the randomness takes a backseat to "What is our objective and how do we accomplish it?". Arkham Horror doesn't have different objectives or scenarios. It's literally the same wincon every game and the only gamewide variance comes from what Elder God you happen to be facing, and dealing with whatever minor effect that god has on the game.

I think if Arkham Horror were a much shorter game with a bit more actual brainwork, I'd appreciate it more (or even think it was a good game at all). But considering the bulk of the 'strategy' for the game comes from "which investigator is going to close the gate while everyone else gets RNG'd", and the game lasts hours, I can't really bring myself to appreciate as anything more than a beautifully flavored Lovecraftian RPG with dice rolls.

In post 239, Chevre wrote:Do you believe that Elder Signs is more or less strategic than Arkham Horror? I watched the TableTop episode on it and it was quite fascinating.

They're in the same universe and made by the same developer, and the only difference is instead of random card draw in Arkham Horror, it's random dice rolls in Elder Sign. Also, IIRC, you can move wherever the hell you want in Elder Sign, while in Arkham Horror, you're limited by your speed.

Never heard of Space Alert.

I think my biggest problem with Ticket to Ride comes from downtime. You only do one thing, really, on your turn... so turns go by quick, but downtime takes a long ass time. Putting down the train pieces, flipping and shuffling new cards, waiting for people to select tickets... there's just not a lot of constant shit to be paying attention to. You know where you're going to put down your train, so I always feel like my turn comes and goes and then there's this massive amount of time in between where nothing interesting happens.

Sounds more like a problem with your friends than the game; because things flow quickly around here unless Vi is playing in which case you get the equally fun scenario of everyone plays quickly into Vi's turn; everyone makes fun of Vi for being slow and then Vi panics and makes a bad decision.

Perhaps. I also just really dislike the limited actions on your turn. "I'm going to place a train!" or "I'm going to draw new cards!" then boom, done. It's just not very interactive.

Speaking of interactive... has anyone played Galaxy Trucker? I forgot to mention that I picked it up a few weeks ago and holy hell, it is so much fun. The frantically-building-your-ship part is obviously fun, but the real fun comes in watching other people (like Pie) lose half of their fucking ship to one meteor strike because they decided to make a loop.

It's seriously fun and really interactive. No downtime, ever.

I've been using Vassal for awhile, there are a few pretty popular games that usually have people waiting to play, but otherwise you have to get your own group together. Like, I know Game of Thrones & Arkham Horror
usually

To give a better idea of my family, they claim to like board games, but insist on playing games like Life, and Monopoly, and RISK, and I want to ease them into life outside of Parker Brothers

Carcassonne is probably a really good idea, too. It was my first "non-Parker Brothers" board game and I still cherish it. I have non-geek friends who played with me all the time and they loved it.

Also, how many people are you looking to fit into a game? I actually recently had a friend bring over a game called Zombies!!! and while it was kind of slow for me, it was a lot of fun overall. It involves building the board as you go along and trying to run around and collect weapons/bullets/etc. while also trying to place zombies in your opponents' paths to try and get them eaten. Nobody gets "eliminated", if you "die" you just start back at the starting area, and the cards you can play for special actions all have comical flavor on it to make it fun.

Betrayal is fantastic and it works well if someone understands the game because it's really easy to explain.

Yeah actually 7W is perfect

Zor: it's called the 7Wonders companion or something. Adds setup randomizer, stat tracking, score assistant, a new wonder, and a lot of quick reference cheat sheet type things.

Played Game of Thrones tonight for the first time in like six months.

Still my favorite board game ever.

This is the longest game I've ever played tonight though...it took 5 hours, and lasted until turn 9. Neither of those have happened before.

Lannister was down to one territory on turn 5 but stayed alive. That was cool.

If you like strategy with very low randomness, I would highly recommend Brass. It's top-10 on BGG for a very good reason.

I think one of my biggest issues is that these "resource management" games all seem to go for the same type of setting and that just gets old and makes the games feel way too similar, even if they're really different, mechanically. Give me a resource management game in space.

Okay, looking for a new board game to buy. Prerequisites:

- Nothing over like an hour or so, we already own a bunch of 1.5-3hr games
- Something that scales up to at least 5 players, more is better but not required
- Our group tends to like drafting mechanics in games (magic players) & simultaneous turns (only suggestions, not crucial)
- Nothing fully cooperative...stuff with one traitor is fine but nothing where it's everyone versus the board
- Our most played games in this group are 7 Wonders, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Smallworld, Shadow Hunters, and Game of Thrones

How many people do you generally have?
Does the number of players affect the game experience?

Aka, 6 means fullhouse but does that make the game crazylong?

Thanks in advance.

In post 712, AngryPidgeon wrote:Reck, pleeeaaaaase. I've played at LEAST 100 games of 7 wonders. The things you are saying are not factual.

In reality the cards you should go for depend largely on your neighbors plays and how many people are in the game.

EDIT: Also military is pretty much always something you should be actively manipualting.

And making plays to ensure you get a caravansery over anyone else is also always solid.
I have, too.

I find that military play is entirely dependent upon your neighbors. If they're investing a bunch into military resources, let them have it, because it only has a finite amount of potential point gain possible. Focusing on military is rarely the way to win because at most you're going to get 18 victory points from it. And if someone makes a surprise final build to tie your military, then you've just wasted your resources.

Playing to your specific wonder's strengths or complementing your wonder is the way to go, because there's usually going to be at least one card you need to pass by you. The only time this doesn't apply is with the guilds IMO, because there's only one of each and they're highly contested, AND people are more likely to bury guilds that they don't want their neighbors to get.

For example: if you're Giza B, you're going to be able to get some insane victory point value out of building your wonder, but it's also going to require a fuckload of resources. Scooping up as much of the natural resource cards as possible round one is the correct play. This naturally promotes grabbing a Haven ASAP in Age II. You also want to go for Baths & Aqueduct because you're going to have the stone to play it anyway. So, Age I, you're focusing on grabbing as much wood and stone and natural resources as possible, and pick up Baths, and any grey resources you can. This forces people to pay you for resources, and allows you to build your structures for free when you get a dead hand or want to hate out a card. Age II you fill in the holes in your raw materials, and get the last 1-2 grey resources so you have a full spread. Then you grab aqueduct and double down on building your wonder, since you have all the materials buy now to build it without paying. When Age III comes around, your build naturally supports Haven/Chamber of Commerce, and even Arena after you grab your fourth wonder stage.

This is all entirely based upon the idea that Giza needs tons of resources early to make use of its passive advantage. If you're not playing to your wonder's strengths, then you're missing out on a large advantage that you're afforded naturally.

EBWOP: Obviously, playing reactionary is part of it, but playing to your wonder's strengths should come first... and analyzing what wonders are near you will also inform your decisions. For example, are you next to Rhodes while playing Giza? Then you're going to be in a resource battle, because Rhodes is
heavily
dependent upon raw materials, too, and that'll prioritize certain cards over others. But it's all informed by your base strategy, which
should
play to the strengths of your wonder.

Taking a 1 point hit on military where your neighbors are going to waste valuable time and cards building their military isn't that big of a trade IMO. Though I do agree -- military becomes bonkers when you can get away with only building like one structure per age. I love playing Halikarnassos B (I think it's B) for that very reason... I can just wait to see what my opponents are doing and then dig through the discard pile for as much military as I want if it helps me beat them. I usually wait until at least Age II to build my first wonder for that very reason.

I don't think there's ever a time when I don't complete my wonder. The special abilities are insane in most cases, plus at the very worst, it's a way to bury a card I don't want my neighbor to get while also gaining incremental advantage.

And yes, Haven is age 3... it's also the one that gives 1/1 per brown... isn't that what I said? I need to doublecheck but I'm too lazy to get my copy out.

What makes the Bath play so good is that there's only ONE of them in the deck, from 2 player all the way up to 6 player. A second one gets added at 7 players, so grabbing it cuts off everyone else.

I turned on some Magic: the Gathering addon for Chrome and now it keeps replacing Mr. Flay's name with a link to a card called Flay.

Fucking Ticket to Ride sucks. It's a hair above Settlers of Catan.

Tsuro is a beautifully designed diversion, a very serene and peaceful experience (not to mention, somehow incredibly fun just to swoop your little dragon across the board).

I have not played Forbidden Island but my
god
I want to...

Also I think I've got the next board game purchase down to either: Lords of Waterdeep, Shadows Over Camelot, or Letters from Whitechapel. Thoughts?

The Commune picked up RoboRally the other day.

On the positive side, it's utter chaos and watching your carefully planned turn fall apart because one other player intervened is both horrifying and exhilarating.

On the negative side, it's utter chaos and watching your carefully planned turn fall apart because one other player intervened is both horrifying and exhilarating.

I didn't hate it... it just seemed to go on way too long and it didn't feel like there was a ton of strategy involved.

I do have a soft spot for Galaxy Truckers, mostly because I manage to avoid the RNG asteroids most of the time.

It is another one of those games that I feel almost relies too much on RNG and not enough on actual strategy. Flipping tiles over is random, assembling them requires skill. And then... that's it. The cards are random and there's really no strategy involved in the cards. Still fun to watch your opponent's spaceships get blasted to smithereens.

Still trying to get a feel for how I feel about it. I disliked that the actual play through after building your ship seems to be 90% negative things and no "rewards". Mostly. May have been an unlucky deck?
Eh, what I meant is that it's mostly "luck based" on what you flip over. If you get something awful you don't need and the person beside you grabs a bomb ass storage compartment, that's luck, not skill. Sure there's skill in placing the pieces you get on your ship, but flipping over what you need is luck.

The races look WILDLY different at a cursory glance. Some of the special abilities look insane. Alchemists, for example, just being able to turn VP into gold and gold into VP at will seems just NUTS. Then being able to trade workers for priests after your stronghold is built? Holy hell. Meanwhile, the giants seem very underwhelming. Terraforming costs two instead of one shovel? Uhh, okay.

It's a cool idea that lost novelty very quickly for me because at its core it's still Risk.

On another note, seriously Terra Mystica is the best game I've ever played. Wow.

Another few thoughts about Terra Mystica:

- It's WAY more important than I realized to just devise ways to keep taking arbitrary actions during turns. The ability to wait out that last person for one turn longer can prove the difference between victory or defeat. I was way in the lead tonight in the 2nd to last round, where we got bonus VP for scoring trading posts. Fate had the bonus tile for scoring even MORE VP for trading posts and managed to catch up to me. I tried to wait for as long as possible but he was able to outlast me the final round so I didn't get the bonus.

- Races, in a vacuum, are definitely unbalanced. But looking at what's going on with the round tiles will mean some races that are shitty become amazing. I think Giants are the worst race in the game, in a vacuum, but in a world where the turn one round tile is the stronghold/sanctuary bonus? Well, that works AMAZING on a race like Giants that wants their stronghold out as early as humanly possible.

- Tonight was my first time playing with five people, and holy shit, the cult board becomes a different game altogether. In my previous experiences playing with 3-4 people, there was never a huge race for cult spots. Tonight, however, there was a clusterfuck on that cult board that ended up causing Fate to skyrocket ahead of me at endgame and come in first.

- Still trying to figure out the optimal way to play the "teleporting" races (Witches, flying carpet dudes, Dwarves, Mermaids). It seems to me that through our experiences, the INCORRECT way to play them is to try and expand all over the board early, because resources are TIGHT in this game. I think using their special powers properly means just staying connected like a normal race and trying to force players to cut you off, then using your special ability to branch elsewhere OR use it as a surprise cut-off for another player.

- The interactivity component is something we all completely overlooked until tonight. Nuwen chose a race that wound up with her easiest terraforms being immediate opponents' home tiles, which meant a ton of cut-off that ultimately lead to her loss. I found a set of PDFs that show the map in "heat" mode for each race, with the "hottest" areas being where it's easiest for your race to terraform.

- Finally... this is the first game where I don't feel I can "figure out" who wins two turns ahead of time. Most of the time I can do the math near late game and see "Oh shit, so-and-so is unstoppable now"... this game feels
slightly
like solitaire but there are so many variables that it's nearly impossible to do the math ahead of time and accurately predict what's going to happen.

I so so so so so love this game.

Commune got a few new additions for Christmas:
King of Tokyo: Pretty fun for a filler game, a little bit basic, though.

Space Cadets: Holy shit. I'm glad Gamma knew what was going on because the rest of us were thoroughly confused by all the little moving pieces of the game, but I guess the beauty of it is that it's a very complex co-op game where you only need to know how to do your specific mini game. Really enjoyed it... first co-op game I've ever really enjoyed.

Masquerade: Beautiful little game.

Also got some Netrunner datapacks

Whoafuck. Just got Letters from Whitechapel for my birthday, played two games last night.

Technically I shouldn't have been caught because Gamma lied about the rules, but it seems pretty fun, at least from the SK's perspective. Not sure how fun it would be as an investigator, but Fate/Nuwen/Gamma/Grimm seemed to enjoy it. I think once we start adding in the extra rules (like investigator abilities + "false clues" + letters) it should get even better. It's a pretty basic game to understand but one that's very hard to play.

I think we're getting a new board game today... probably Suburbia.

Does the expansion add a lot to the game? As in, is it worth buying at the outset?

We're getting Suburbia and so I'm looking for another purchase with it, preferably cheap-ish, but I don't know what to get. Was looking at Hive or Love Letter, something quick/light/cheap/easy to start the night

Ended up picking up Love Letter & Shadows Over Camelot. The issue we had was that we were about to pick up Suburbia, when we found out we'd have five people for the night, not four. So we had to call an audible and Shadows Over Camelot was about the only thing they had. I nabbed Love Letter at the checkout because I wanted to see what it was all about.

I enjoyed Love Letter
immensely
, hooooooly shit. It was so good. I'm in love. It's not as "quck" as you'd think with having to play till 4-7 cubes, but it's FANTASTIC for what it is. Very interesting game, we quite enjoyed it, I think we played 5 times last night.

Shadows Over Camelot was alright. I liked it better than Battlestar Galactica, which is what it mostly reminds me of... take BSG, trim the fat and make it a little more manageable and less complex, and you've got Shadows Over Camelot. The hidden traitor mechanic is great because it keeps you paranoid the whole time. I feel like there's probably a "breaking" strategy that will make the game pretty pointless after you figure it out, which is my only issue with the game.

We usually have about five people, which makes buying new games awkward since 90% of them go up to four.

Hmmm. So apparently the Tzolkin expansion ups the player count to five, which was one of the main things holding me back.

Anyone have experience with the game? Is it any good?

Also curious about Seasons, because it kind of looks like drafting dice, and that makes me giddy.

Question: if I don't own and have never played Agricola, should I just go straight for Caverna? Because people basically seem to say "Caverna is good but it's just more Agricola", but if I don't own and haven't played either, which should I go for?

It basically puts this thing in a question of {Agricola v Caverna} or Archipelago or Suburbia or Tzolk'in+Expansion.

We just found about $60 in Amazon giftcards so if we did pick up Tzolk'in we'd want to grab the expansion as well.

Tsuro was such a fun little diversion. I felt really peaceful playing that game, even if it was basically just mindless.

Tsuro of the Seas is the same concept as the original, only with more added randomness. It's prettier, too.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/dicetowershow ... sode14.mp3

My CCG episode of Dice Tower Showdown finally came out. A couple notes:

- The people we were arguing against had been on the show before and knew the format
- My partner refused to communicate with me prior to the taping so we couldn't coordinate (and his angles of attack were weird and different from mine)
- We got cut VERY short in the taping because another topic had to record; I thought we had two hours, they gave us one, so I never got into the back end of my arguments
- They got about 75% of the talk time and we got 25%. Probably a byproduct of our newbieness to the podcast
- The pro-CCG side strawmanned pretty hard. "WHY IS IT A BAD THING IF CCGs SUPPORT STORES?", "WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE HAVING FUN?"
- We felt they just brushed aside perfectly valid arguments.
- Interesting after-argument: pro-CCG people seem to always fall back to the "it keeps gaming stores open therefore it's good"... isn't it more like "CCGs transformed gaming stores into CCG stores"?
- Another afterpoint... the pro side really contradicted themselves. They say that the fun of the CCG model is partly the mystery involved in opening packs. That is the essence of the CCG model. Then they turned around and said "you don't have to keep spending money on the game", which completely reverses what their definition of a CCG is.

The old version won't have the expansion pack built in, but I'm pretty sure the new version does. Like, I think the box on the new version actually says "NEW BONUS CHARACTERS" or something on it. The art is also different.

Being in the hobby a long time, having a gamer for a wife, and having good game groups around all contribute to being able to play MOAR GAMES. Having a baby detracts from it. Having baby out of town adds to it.
Very impressive! I have a gamer for a fiance and
used
to have a good game group... the hobby has taken a backseat to certain other financial priorities recently. I'll snap a pic of my collection at some point, which is pretty meager, but I'm impressed that we've done well having only been in the hobby for a couple years.

If it's just four of you, Suburbia is probably the way to go for medium length games (under two hours), considering you said you already played KoT & Betrayal.

Alternatively, you can get in a few rounds of Love Letter in that amount of time, and it's only like a $10 pick up.

We bought Robo Rally, then immediately traded it away. :\

For 5+ people, it's a really weird number. It's hard to get a game that'll suit everybody, since most of the games I like cap out at 4. We had that same problem with our group because there were always 5-6 of us. Ended up going with Terra Mystica, but that's probably way too heavy for your family.

If you want something that's happy go lucky forever and nobody ever steps on each other's toes, try out a co-op game like Forbidden Island.

If you don't mind "one winner" and some competition, check out Small World.

Shadows Over Camelot is good if you're not playing with kids. Ticket to Ride was the "intro" game that I used to get everyone into board games, even though I can't stand the damn game now.

I'd love to play Hanabi online!

Re: RftG-- See, I like engine building games. But if I already have Quarriors, Dominion, Dice Masters, etc. will RftG be unique enough to scratch a special itch?

Re: Suburbia-- Do you know if the expansion is worth getting? I like the idea of it adding more asymmetrical play to the game (and increasing the # of players) but I also wouldn't mind waiting on it if the base game is good enough.

Re: Pixel Tactics-- It does look very good. But, it's only two players, and we always have a minimum of 4!

Played Kemet today with Gamma + quadz for the first time. I fucking loved it! The pieces are so detailed and well-done, and it basically takes the concept of the GoT board game and says, "okay, let's remove the first 1.5-2hrs of turtling and slow progression and drop you straight into the danger zone". There's little in the way of alliance-making (though that could be due to the fact we played it with only three people), but the depth of strategy and build orders/paths makes it very intriguing. Probably in my top five.

No it probably means you dislike this type of game. >_>

If you find this inaccessible or too complex, it's probably the simplest one as far as getting information goes. Game of Thrones is like this one on steroids with the complexity, and there's way more information to take in... the only thing you'd have to know in this one is what each power tile does and I think that'd come with time (especially since you can generally know "creatures give buffs, there's a Hand of God tile in each color, there's a VP tile in each color" etc). Smallworld is probably the closest thing to being "kind of sort of like Kemet but not really" that I think you enjoy.

The one thing I disliked about Kemet was that it felt like nothing really mattered... I couldn't see the advantage in long-term holdings or trying to plan elaborate troop movements, and upon reflection that's because it's not a war game/troop movement game. The map/board placement is there for window dressing, but this is essentially a resource management game with a combat minigame mixed in, and that's not a bad thing, it's just not what I was expecting on first glance.

tldr: With Kemet, I was expecting Game of Thrones with Egyptian Gods, and what I got was something closer to Terra Mystica, where board control is incidental to your engine building/economic strategy.

Kingsburg still sees play every once in awhile, even two years after I bought it.

Played another round of Kemet last night, went for a different strategy this time... and everyone in this game was WAY more willing to start assaulting people right out of the gate, which made the whole game very intense. I also like combat in this game, because it's not like you think this person is a dick for attacking you... it's just like, "Oh, nice play!" and you move on.

I really found Savage Worlds appealing because of its simplicity. It felt like something that'd be very simple and easy to run, plus I
really really loved
the Deadlands Reloaded setting when I read through it. I was actually trying to get a group together to run through it... but no luck so far.

Why do you guys dislike SW? What other relatively simple system would you recommend that can have a whole fuckload of different settings/scenarios/etc and would be easy to run as a first time DM? I've run one-offs and fucked it up, I want to walk through a premade setting/campaign. I'm a big fan of twists and turns and shocking my players.

I only need 14 cards to finish the set... unfortunately, it's 3/4 super rares and 11 rares -_-

I'm someone who hates co-op games, but I've managed to find a few that I actually enjoy:

Hanabi [Short, simple, elegant]
Shadows Over Camelot [A little more complex, still basic, possibly one traitor]
Betrayal at House on the Hill [Fun, chaotic, wacky, unbalanced madness]
Scotland Yard/Mr. X/Letters from Whitechapel [All vs One, work as a team to find where the SK is hiding]

Do not, under any circumstance, purchase Arkham Horror. That game is lazily made, a massive, sprawling mess of pieces and mechanics that don't gel well together. Way too complex for its own good, and absolutely no strategy involved. It's just RNG card draw! RNG dice roll! RNG RNG RNG RNG! Stay far away from it... if you really like the Lovecraftian vibe, go for Elder Sign... it's not great, but it's at least more controlled than Arkham.
