so me, pie, and my boyfriend went and bought magic cards last night

Okay, so we each got one of the Planeswalker 2012 starter decks (the mono color ones with 30 cards). I went with blue (Pie took black, Grimm took green, I didn't think I'd enjoy red, so duh, blue). We also split a sealed box of Innistrad boosters AND got a shitton of free commons from the guys sitting at the store playing MtG.

But I'm getting my ass kicked. Blue just seems like such a shitty deck compared to the power of green (terrifying monsters, terrifying buffs) and black (zombies never truly die, vampires lifesteal). What does blue have? Deck burners and...that's about it. Ugh.

These are what I’d consider the Tier 1 archetypes, which doesn’t mean that they are always better than the others, but that they are better more of the time. There exists a nut version of every deck, but it’s pretty hard to go wrong while drafting one of these combinations; they are open more often, and better when they are open.

To me, this says "Go for white if it's open." Is that fair? I hear white is pretty stronk in the current format.

Also, here's my deck from last night. When we got home we had some leftover packs so I added more to it (like another Captain, a Thrabane Doomsayer, and a couple more geists).

The first pack I opened I had a Drogskol Captain, so I took it. The second pack passed to me... also had a Drogskol Captain. So I opened up with two of those. Then I just KEPT getting passed blue/white flying cards, so it was pretty clear to me that it was open (and it was, nobody else went for that combo).

Avacyn Restored panel from PAX can be followed here. Just a few things revealed so far:

- Avacyn is not the only legendary creature, there are three others.
- Undying is the only mechanic carrying over from INN/DKA
- New mechanic: Soulbond
- Silverblade Paladin - 1WW, 2/2, Soulbond (You may pair this creature with another unpaired creature when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired as long as you control both of them). As long as Silverblade Paladin is paired with another creature, both creatures have double strike. Rare card.
- Restoration Angel - 3W, Flash, Flying, 3/4, When Restoration Angel enters the battlefield, you may exile target non-angel creature you control then return that creature to the battlefield under your control. Rare.
- Sigarda, Host of Herons - 2GWW - Flying, Hexproof, 5/5, spells and abilities your opponents control can't cause you to sacrifice permanents. Mythic.
- New mechanic: Miracles
- Thunderous Wrath - 4RR, Instant, Thunderous Wrath deals 5 damage to target creature or player. Miracle R (You may cast this card for its Miracle cost when you draw it if it's the first card you drew this turn)

If I wanted to learn, what would be the easiest way? I don't really wanna spend $10 off the bat, is there a good free place to play online, or would it be best to just buy an account.

Depends on if you want to play online, or in real life. Honestly, as far as learning the rough BASICS go, you can dick around with Elements... it's similar to Magic in basic play and rules.

If you want to get rolling on it, honestly, a starter kit on MTGO is probably the best bet. Or you can do what I did and go to a local game shop... most of them have these Magic 2012 base sets for free that give you a certain amount of starter cards in a certain color. You can then buy an intro pack or an event deck just to get the basics down and play some practice games.

I don't know many other ways to learn other than just doing it. But coming to Magic from Elements helped me understand a lot of things better

My understanding of Soulbond is "Card with Soulbond comes into play, is paired with another card you control in play. Both get buffed in some fashion as long as they are in play."

Yeah, Creature with SB enters play, pairs with an unpaired creature, both get a bonus.

But it's not like... they become "lovers" where if one dies, the other does, right?

In which case, it's basically just a creature card with a buff for another creature that applies when it enters the battlefield.

Oh, and rules question: at the FNM I went to last week, I was playing this guy (who eventually won the tournament). He used Prey Upon to force one of his monsters to fight one of mine. I had Bonds of Faith on the creature he chose to attack me with, yet he said it didn't apply since BoF only works with "combat damage" and this was "Prey Upon damage", not "combat damage".

That just sounded like a load of bullshit, but the guy had been playing for years longer than me so I just shrugged it off.

Miracle actually seems fairly non-random as long as you're not counting on doing massive card draws.

It's tech as hell with think twice and forbidden alchemy, and is going to way power up those decks.

I hated my pulls. Not a single mythic and my rares were shit. The only decent rare pull I got was Divine Deflection, which actually won me a couple of games. I ended up going white/green, because I had so many cheap humans + bomb ass angels that it made sense for me to throw in the Pathbreaker Wurm with Trample Soulbond and the Druid's Familiar with +2/+2 Soulbond. I also had an INSANE amount of removal for a set that supposedly lacks removal, but in the end I only wound up 3-3. I will say the last match I played was bullshit, as I played against some rules stickler who wouldn't let me mulligan because I had drawn my cards already before we decided who was going to go first or something bullshit like that, so I wound up with a 1-mana starting draw and STILL almost beat him.

I'm actually really interested to see what I can do with my UW spirit deck from INN/DKA mixed in with all the new angels.

RULES QUESTION:

If I play a Bone Splinters, which says "as an additional cost, sac a creature" but I also have an Alchemists Apprentice which has the ability "Sac Alchemist's Apprentice: draw a card", can I use the AA's ability as the additional cost to play Bone Splinters?

I'm a little curious as to how a sacrificial deck would work. If you have multiple creatures that have "Sac a creature: XXXXXXXXX" do all of their abilities creature when you sac a creature? Or do you have to choose just one?

So as a basic idea, how does this UB Homicidal Seclusion deck work?

I'm wary of putting in Bone Splinters simply because I don't have enough creatures to be sacrificing them for Bone Splinters. Plus, with Demonic Taskmaster/Alchemist's sacrifice abilities, the morbid trigger on Tragic Slip is enough to destroy pretty much anything.

I have most of these cards (though not playsets of all of them) so what would you guys recommend? I'm changing it up a bit by throwing in some Marrow Bats.

The reason I chose Marrow Bats is because with the lifelink, I'd heal for 7 life each turn... if I needed to regenerate, I could just pay 4 life and regenerate the bats.

Playing in my M13 league has been fun so far. The original deck I built was blue/black control and it did decently well... murder, public execution, unsummon, rewind, etc all give me control over the board, and a couple mind sculpt and veldalkan enchanters for mill.

Well, I was thinking for the "pack ripping", I would just use a booster generator for the set and PM each participant with their pool of cards. People could mess around however they wanted, then we'd probably use Magic Workshop or something to make the decks and play each other?

In total, to update this deck for RtR, I'd only be spending about $15-20 on all the new cards. I still need a second Bonfire, though, which is gonna be PRICEY.

Bonfire of the Damned isn't going to be very high impact in the new Standard, as midrange and efficiently costed rumps are going to rule the format. And the other aggro deck, Zombies, couldn't care less about a Bonfire. I think you're fine without another. Its purpose in your deck is a fireball effect, which I don't think would be that great considering you'll be looking to run not so many lands in a RDW style build.

I had a moment today where I nearly lost my shit on some guy. He was being a dick the whole game, doing stuff like:

- All games: Showing his cards/hand to the two playing at the table next to us and discussing the hand

- Game #1: He had me down to 1 life. I had no creatures, 1 card in hand, and he had a 3/3-something and an Izzet Keyrune. His turn. He can clearly swing and win, but he announced, "Nah, I don't wanna win yet, I wanna win in a fun way." Instead of scooping, I figure, "If this asshole isn't going to kill me, I'll just keep drawing because I have shit that can boardwipe and save me from losing." 10ish turns past and he still hasn't killed me, so I finally scoop because that one game took FOREVER. It was PURPOSEFULLY stalling.

- Game #2: I had a 5/5 centaur token on the battlefield. I swing. He blocks with a 2/4. It dies. He then announces he's tapping his Izzet Staticaster to ping me for 1 damage. I respond by throwing out Avenging Arrow to kill it, but he then says he didn't realize my token was a 5/5, and therefore doesn't want to ping it. I go, "You announced it and I've already thrown out my Avenging Arrow," and he goes, "Yeah but I never even tapped him for it, can I please take it back?" I said okay because why not, it's just for fun, right? Then some people come to watch our game and he starts bragging, "Yeah, I know he's holding an Avenging Arrow in there, so no way am I going to swing with my Rakdos!" That pissed me off something royal.

- Game #3: We only have 7 minutes left in the round. He starts bitching about how we need to hurry. I tell him I'm gonna shuffle my deck and he makes a negative comment about how I'm taking too long. I draw. Shit hand, I decide to mull. He explodes, "MAN COME ON, HURRY UP, I'M NOT GONNA DRAW THIS." I draw 6, still shit, no lands, need to mull. He continues bitching about how I'm taking too long so I start trying to hurry. I'm so rushed at this point I keep my hand of 5 despite only having one off-color land and decide to play. Suboptimal play due to him pressuring me. Continuing on, he plays Rakdos on turn 5. I play my creature, then at the end of my turn/beginning of his turn, I realize he only has one swamp. Gamma asks him, "Uhhh how did you play Rakdos without having two swamps?" And he goes, "Oh, my bad, I'll just pick him back up." We were so short on time that I didn't want to call a judge over and just let him do it, because then we'd have to take my turn back and I honestly would've swung in if Rakdos hadn't been on the field. He proceeds to play Rakdos and win right before the "five more turns" are up.

People like that just piss me off. I've never called a judge over personal problems before, ever, because I don't feel the need to be SUPER SRS OMG COMPETITIVE in the Magic events I attend. Hell, even today, it was just regular REL, nobody could get disqualified. But I was put under pressure game three and forced to rush my play because game one, he decided to "troll" and refuse to kill me off when he could've won the game ten turns earlier. Couple that with the misplay game two where he was able to see a combat trick I had because he "took back" the move, and playing Rakdos without the proper mana out (he was also playing custom/altered islands that were covered in black grungy art so they looked like swamps) which fucked up my turn, and that kid just needed to get punched in the dick. Fucking hell.

I think I'll aim for Azorius or Rakdos.

I think those are probably the easiest guilds to draft, not to mention it means I don't have to play Izzet or Golgari. Red cards will go to Rakdos, Blue cards will go to Azorius, Black cards will go to Rakdos. I'm not sure how to feel about Selesnya... it seems decent but I think making the choice between generating tokens vs. populating vs. creatures vs. removal vs. control vs. evasion is a lot harder to pull off than other guild's thought processes.

Looks like the new standard is going to be dominated by UW decks. Funny, the other day I was thinking about expanding my mono-white humans deck into UW humans. All I'd need to build the first place deck is +2 Elite Inquisitors (<$1), +3 Geist of Saint Traft ($60), +1 Restoration Angel ($10), +3 Sublime Archangel ($45), +3 Thalia ($10) (and I guess I'd need a cavern of souls if I really wanted to go all out). So...about $100 to complete my deck. Feh. And I already have so many of those cards

The problem with this deck, I think, is that it's trying to do burn and it's trying to do the creature beatdown, but it's half-assing it at both. Need Shred-Freaks for sure... I think if we're going to be running Vexing Devil then we need to build a deck that can afford to get the opponent down to 0 with burn spells alone.

I'll be keeping the devils, but likely dropping flames. Vexing.Devil on turn 4 is incredible damage.

The wolf runs are a wincon and they also give counters to the nobles.

I'm going to go more creature heavy. I think running pillars, brimstone volley, searing spear, then either annihilating fire or flames puts the burn where it needs to be.

So...what can I do with Vraska? She seems fairly useless in most decks. I got some decent money cards, so I figure now's the time to trade and get some bang for my buck and start working on some kind of workable backbone for a standard deck that can actually compete. I have a lot of UW lands already, maybe I'll go that way.
