Online misses the best part of Magic: the spectator sport.

I've been interested in this game, but don't have a lively MTG scene locally. Is this a good place to learn? What's the cost like to actually engage at any noobish to mid-range level.

I've been to the Good Games here and the issue is that it's like 40 minutes drive away, on a work night (and I'm not saying weekend nights are better. I know they play on Fridays but I'm usually busy with friends), and the store isn't really designed around helping new guys or getting new people involved. To be entirely honest, I didn't actually ask if anyone was willing to help out a new guy, and I probably should've.

I'm probably more interested in the casual environment rather than trying to be amazing, I'm more interested in the craft, metagame, and strategy than in making "my ultimate deck". I.e. I'm more interested in draft than anything else.

Next year I'm moving to a bigger city, with a more intrinsic nerd culture (very coastal/surf/bogan here), and will be able to get involved in more play, but for now just kind of want to learn and experiment and enjoy.

EDIT: How long is a magic game on average?

I've been playing 2014 duels of the plainswalkers on steam.

Solid game. Interesting meta.

I am considering going to the games shop locally for Friday Night Magic. Just thought I'd let you know...

I am intrigued.

I has cards now. Not good ones but enough that I could build a weird red/green sliver aggro deck.

Like I said, not good, but a start. I'm thinking of playing at the comp on Sunday just to get some game time in.

Hey! What's your decklist? There are some cool budget sliver builds out there.
1x Blur Sliver
1x Wildwood Rebirth
1x Farseek
1x Striking Sliver
1x Mugging
1x Flames of the Firebrand
1x Giant Growth
2x Shock
1x Lobber Crew
1x Deadly Recluse
1x Gruul War Chant
2x Battle Sliver
1x Guttersnipe
1x Sliver Construct
1x Hunt the Weak
1x Trollhide
2x Aerial Predation
1x Zhur-Taa Swine
2x Act of Treason
1x Chandra's Outrage
1x Annihilating Fire
1x Manaweft Sliver
1x Groundshaker Sliver
3x Predatory Sliver
1x Ghor-Clan Rampager
2x Elvish Mystic
2x Brindle Boar

1x Evolving Winds
12x Mountain
12x Forest

So yeah, it feels a little schitzophrenic, but it's kind of the best I could really build out of a deckbuilder's toolkit.

Aussie shipping is about $10 per order, obviously size doesn't matter in the quantities we're talking.

Big limitation is it can only be from one store, cause if I have to go to another store to get a single $0.40 card, that's $10.40

So want to play magic. Falling in love with Card games at the moment. I just hate a lot of the people that play it. I played Friday Night Magic once and the people there were all the worst kind of nerd sterotypes. Not much space, and everyone was fat and smelly or 12 and obnoxious.

EDIT: NOT THAT I AM NOT FAT AND OBNOXIOUS BUT I TRY NOT TO BE.

I appreciate that Pie, I have Duels 2014, and it's pretty good. (EDIT: For clarity, I appreciate it, but I won't take you up on your offer!)

I also don't think I'll be floating a lot of cash next year to get into an expensive hobby if Magic is what Shea led me to believe.

Went to my local gaming store for card sleeves. There was a sign, rule 4 and 5 were "Please shower before attending" and "Remember to use deoderant".

What the fuck, gaming nerds. What the fuck is wrong with us.

There's a certain subset of nerd who believe that being a nerd makes them an enlightened creature of intelligence and therefore above base physical needs like showering. It's certainly off-putting.

It's more that many people who happen to take part in so called "nerdy" activities tend to fall somewhere on the spectrum of anti-social personality disorder, and honestly how they smell has never occured to them

Okay, but I know from my game store at least two who are of the "enlightened" type, since they won't shut up about it.

The singularity is now.

If I met someone who was "above" showering, they would not be "above" a firehose.

This, paradoxically, I think, really has hurt Magic in another way because before the ban, reynad was the number one twitch streamer of MTG--MJ was gettng ~1-2k views at the time and Andrey was getting ~3-5k. After this incident, he jumped ship and is now one of the top Hearthstone streamers(I always see him with between 15-20k views) and he takes every chance he gets to shittalk MtG and WotC. I would not doubt in the slightest that he has hurt them in some slight way, honestly.

I do agree with his statement in the article, though, that the DCI should not be able to issue bans for things said on social media.

WOW that guy seems like a massive douchenozzle.

I've watched some of his hearthstone stuff. didn't put the real name that the article is under alongside his play name. He's a whiny bitch in almost every video. Either he's an arrogant tool when he wins, or he bitches and moans about RNG when he loses. It's a personal thing of mine, but I cannot stand people that "take credit, delegate blame".

I wouldn't want to play against him in either a professional or casual setting, and any notion of cheating furthers that reluctance. Begone.

Bought cards, moved, didn't know anyone and didn't want to learn at FNM. Also they moved onto a new set or whatever while I was moving. gamestore guy didn't think to tell me that those cards were going to be non-valid in two months.
