have a theme you want to run but aren't sure that anybody would be interested? Post it here, see what people think.

Were you going to MeMe? If you want to, it's fine with me. I did some writing for the idea today, and had some neat ideas. I was thinking of using the e-mails for most of the mod text. Something like:

Dear Strong Bad,
What would happen if you and the whole homestar crew played Mafia? I think it would really rawk!!!!1 You could give Pom Pom posting restriction, and the Poopsmith could be a snoop role that could tell everybody ate last night. well that's about all I can think of right now.

Crapfully yors,
Kid of Coolness, Wellington NZ

"Kid of coolness? Does anybody else call you that? And NZ? Where the heck is NZ? Is that like, the fifty-first state? Anyway, I think playing mafia would be pretty cool. I always wanted to have an excuse to kick the crap out of some of the idiots around here. Let's send out the roles and make some magic."

Maybe we could collaborate?

Mmmmmm...Calvin Ball.

I would be so up for a Calvin and Hobbes game. You'd have to work in the cardboard box inventions too though.

Anyway, I'm glad there'll be no hard feelings if I go and set up a Homestar Mafia because I sat down last night and was inspired; I already have a 12 role setup, and have only to write the actual PMs.

I've gotta say I'm anticipating Calvin and Hobbes and CB's Samurai Mafia with excitment. After Texas Mafia you know Samurai is gonna be good. I might eventually do a Majora's Mask or other Zelda themed game. I had an idea once for Groundhog's Day Mafia as a variation on Cuban Smoker's Logic Mafia, in which the players would keep reliving the same night as well as the same day, and you'd be able to see echoes of all the player's walking around from previous nights. Maybe that would be a bad idea though.

Fletcher, this may come as a surprise to you, but the front post of this thread is being updated on a roughly daily basis because I read all of the new posts. I was, in fact, adding onto what Norinel had said.

Know what? I really can't resist the urge to channel Strong Bad here so...

So Maverick, I see you were really letting the creative juices flow on this one, suggesting that PolarBoy run the game he's been signed up to run for the past month was a special stroke of genius. I also notice creative spelling with words such as "hvae" and "probobly". The comic genius was at it's peak when you made a pun on Polar Bear as if that wasn't the obvious intention of his nickname. All in all I give it a thumbs up...for total crappiness! Seriously, the only real use I can find for this e-mail is to DELETE

*DELETED!*

Oh ho ho. So remember kids, keep the crap coming, and sign up to play Homestar Runner Mafia today...after the sign-ups open.

I dunno, something more specific like a Mos Eisley Cantina or Jabba's Palace mini could be pretty fun. But Fletcher is probably right. I wouldn't recomend doing just "Star Wars".

NARNIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, except for Wardrobe and Battle, I think Narnia has the potential to be a really lame mafia theme. I'll probably play anyway.

I'd like to say a few things about this thread as a clarification. First of all, it doesn't mean anything. This is something I put together so that mods could find out whether or not there was interest in a particular theme before going to the trouble of fleshing it all out. That way if, for instance, I found out that Homestar Runner fans were considered equal to bugeyed freaks here, I wouldn't bother writing it and then going through the painfully slow process of having sign-ups for a game nobody wants to play. I figured others would like access to the same service as well.

But it doesn't mean anything. Just because somebody hasn't claimed a theme doesn't mean they won't do it, Just because a theme hasn't been mentioned here doesn't mean it won't happen, and most importantly, someone claiming a theme doesn't mean they have any special right to it. It does, however reduce the potential pool for your game, as people are somewhat less likely to play a game based on a theme they just played(or so the untested theory goes). It's also to let people know who is most likely to be modding a certain theme. I might, for instance, be more interested in playing a HHGG game modded by Werebear than by another mod. So it's nice to see that name in parentheses next to it.

Just please do not take this thread too seriously. I mostly put it up as an underhanded way to hype Homestar Runner Mafia. Which, by the way, is going to be Revengeanceful.

So until next time, keep posting your crap, and I'll keep posting mine.

I keep forgetting to throw in my two cents about games. Done right, Shakespeare based mafia could rock. He was the king of under the table plots, murder, suspicion, and everything else that makes mafia great.

Norinel, a good version of that is the paranoid, who's role is activated when he gets targeted. A truthful claim would alert the mafia to his presence, and then they wouldn't attack him. I've wanted to see this role used more so that cop and doctor players could bluff it.

perfectly normal mafia v.2 same name, completely different setup, also roles from front page.
Look, I wasn't joking when I called this the
theme
barometer. If all you're looking for is some hype for an upcoming game, this is not the place. The mini moderating sign-ups here are highly regulated to limit competition between mods. I didn't start this thread to promote it. What this is here for is so that you can find out whether or not there's interest in a particular theme so that you don't go to the trouble of writing it for no audience. This way when I say "I was thinking about doing a game based on 'Seabert'." and when I hear crickets chirping instead of a resounding "I'd play that!" I'll know not to waste everybody's time with it.

By the way anyone who has suggestions on how I can keep this thread clean while remaining fair to posters would definitely find a ready set of ears here.

Sorry, I got a little carried away (okay, very carried away), but I did post that to see if there is interest, not to hype. Although it is ironic seeing you post that after this:

You may not have noticed, but that bit about hyping Homestar Runner was in a joking tone. Perhaps the use of the word "Revenganceful" didn't tip you off? I really abused the word hype there. I did it to find out about interest in theme source material and thought "Well golly gee, maybe some other mods would like this too." especially after seeing a few games in the mini-themed queue go by with no sign-ups.

Your questions are valid though.
Wacky wrote:But really, 1. Do people who aren’t planning to mod really frequent this place
I don't think people who aren't planning to mod frequent this place. On the other hand most of the active posters on Mafia Scum seem interested in modding, so I don't think that's a problem. There's obviously a large enough slice to get the necesary encouragement for a game.(See the entry for "Calvin and Hobbes")
Wacky wrote:2. Is this thread really necessary if its only to see if there is interest? One can always just “float” the mafia game and change themes if no one is interested.
Well they could, but where would they do it? They could mention it in a game thread, but that would be off-topic and any response would be also. They could do it in Mafia discussion. But again, any existing thread where they post it is off topic. So they could start their own thread. Which is exactly what I did.

Only I realized that others would want to do the same and we'd have a lot of pointless threads so I left it open to everyone. Then I thought that other mods were gonna want to know what goes on in this thread, but nobody wants to wade through people talking about every stinkin' theme people come up with. But if I do it myself and tabulate my results, nobody else will have to.

So there you have it. You're right because I'm right.

By the way, I'm working on ways I can improve this thread. Right now it doesn't tell you about stuff that's already been run(Valuable information in my opinion) and it's probably a little cluttered. I'm thinking I might limit a given mod to, say 3-5 entries at a time. I think I'm also gonna drop anything that doesn't have associated source material. Basically, if you have to explain what it's actually about(What is Reality Mafia?) it's not going to appear here.

Definitely true, but it's always smart to at least be aware of the other game. If they run close enough together you're unliklely to both get enough players who know the source material unless it's something darn well near universal like Calvin and Hobbes.

well if none of the roles are standard that means a lot of them are probably pretty funky. I think that counts as themed.

er...I haven't updated the front post here in monthes. To be honest I don't think it was fulfilling it's intended purpose of informing scummers about what themes were available and which were wanted, and what was likely to be a successful theme.

There are people who haven't seen Pirates? Poor devils.

er...I guess my last post has discouraged people from using this thread. For starters, people take my opinion too seriously in regard to this thread. It belongs to the scummers and what I want from it doesn't matter. Even if it wasn't accomplishing it's
intended
purpose, that doesn't change the fact that people were using it. Also, I said the front post wasn't accomplishing it's intended purpose. The rest of the thread seemed to be working fine. Basically, if you feel the need to test-market your theme, go ahead, I won't stop you. I just don't update the front post anymore.

Don't think so, sounds interesting. But I see a potential breaking strategy. It seems as though everyone could claim their ranking, and then logically deduce the mafia simply from that(we know for sure that the number one duelist isn't mafia). Unless combat relationships are not entirely transitive. Then everything I've just said goes out the window.

Ooh, I like the idea of Mafia being really bad at dueling. That would be why they have to backstab people at night. Lynching would become a trial of honor. I really, really, like this idea. Probably also have investigative type roles that can learn about a given player's dueling skill. I don't think totally intransitive skill is necessarily good for the game though. I think that generally players would fit within a pecking order, but then you'd have a couple of wrenches thrown into the mix. Like have a character who's very skilled, but becomes a slobbering idiot around a woman, so he loses any duel against a female character. Or maybe a role that, a limited number of times, can win a duel automatically, regardless of skill. I don't think it would be a good idea to make the duel itself a subgame like Ninja Combat. Just seems like it would make the game too much about individual tactics.

Norinel, I've been thinking a little bit about the same thing. Have you ever seen "Xiao-Lin Showdown"? I was thinking it would be cool to combine the dueling idea and the magical artifacts thing into a mafia game or mutation based on the series.

Well I wasn't considering the idea a mutation based on those things, but based on a change of goals. Two or more teams trying to aqquire a certain number of artifacts, or some such. Not sure about the specifics. May be a very bad idea actually.

I'm a Christian(and not offended) and I've been wanting to do a game starting with the last supper and leading up to the crucifixion for a long time and thought Mafia would be a good outlet for it. I still have no clue how it would work. I just think it's great drama with a lot of depth and could be really fascinating to play. There's a lot of great mafia-type stuff in it too. The power struggle between the apostles, the betrayal of Judas, the unfair trials. The distillation of such events into a theme could be true art in game design.

First order of business is eliminating MassRoleClaims and CelebrityX from the mix. But some of the characters are actually ambivalent enough to soften that. Just remember that almost nobody present expected to be called a saint afterward.

Agreed.

Have you ever told someone you were reading a book, or had read a book, and had them respond "I've seen that movie."?

DS: Maybe call it "Best of Mafiascum", or something like that? I like the idea.

Dude, totally in to play firefly mafia. I was about to suggest the same thing, though I've done no work on an actual set-up.

I'm considering more than one idea for my next themed mini. Would there be any interest in Isaac Asimov's Foundation? I'm also considering something rather self-explanatory called Lynch or Lose Mafia, which may not be based on sound game design principles, but I'd be willing to run if there was enough interest. Another idea that just popped into my head would be to do something based on the animation of Amy Winfrey, the creator of Muffin Films, Big Bunny, and Making Fiends.

Dourgrim wrote:Also, how many people need to express interest in an idea here before it can be approved to be run in Theme Park?
No rules concerning the test market, there were just too many threads asking who would be interested in one theme or another. I also used to spend a couple of hours a week updating the front post of this thread to tabulate the interest in different themes in meticulous detail, but I stopped having the time so I removed the outdated statistics and let you all fend for yourselves.

I gave you a wiki link and everything.

Anyway, Lynch-Or-Lose mafia is a setup in which the town starts in a Lynch-Or-Lose scenario on day one (this means 5 mafia in a 12 player game, a possibility normally not even considered by a town). It would be a high-pressure game where every move would have extreme risks associated with it, and I'm still working out how I can make it a fun, balanced game, I also wanted to see if there were people who would subject themselves to such an experiment before wasting queue time on a game that, admittedly may be very, very dumb.

Foundation is looking like it may be too big for a mini, I'm still working on it.

Black and White was a decent joke on anyone who would quote a PM, given the chance, but I wouldn't do it on a regular basis. Actually I'm not sure I would even do it again.
