Hey, this is actually a good idea.

I sincerely appreciate the (mostly) mature way this discussion was de-escalated and "resolved". Bravo to you gentlemen.

I like the idea of a funniest/best moment category, but I can also see the appeal of a funniest/best post, especially to people that aren't that funny usually but really try to go out of their way to be every once in a while, and if it's really that funny, it's probably deserving of being awarded like that. As far as I am aware, Hoopla's not that funny or irreverent a lot of the time, but if she would have made a play like that (fucking awesome, btw) and it would have gone un-awarded, that would have been a crying shame.

I mostly agree with the consensus that has been reached however.

Actually, yeah it is a problem. :(

Along with Funniest Role Claim, it was without a doubt the most fun I had reading through the links on the Scummies wiki page.

Why not? Rising Star implies a new player. Most Improved can apply to someone who's sucked for years and only now is getting better. I think both could have their niche, but Rising Star would get nominated more often because etc. Just because it's a possible Scummie doesn't mean somebody has to get nominated for it, right?

For next year, I nominate we change
Smooth Operator

Best Moderator

I think the issue with Smooth Operator is that every year it just becomes "who fucked up the least", and I find myself going, "Well the dedication you had to this game was truly innovative, but you missed deadline by 10 minutes this one game day, so you're ineligible," and I just don't think that's a fair way to recognize great moderation. It doesn't just come from the flavor, or the setup design, or being timely with votecounts, or resolving disputes well, or creating a fun environment for the players, it's a big combination of everything and should be recognized as such.

I would also like a more colloquial title to be applied to it, like
Beloved Chairman
or something humorous.

Too many titles are just named something simple like "Best Role" when they should have a great name like "Flying Pumpkin That Shoots Lazer Beams Out Its Ass" imo

So stuff like when I had seven replacements in Mini 1359 and they were all replaced within a few hours? I don't think that necessarily makes the game better for the players, it just doesn't let the game get as bad.

And anyway, I think that criteria wouldn't really make for an interesting award (who let the shit hit the fan the least) or even something like who chose the best option for handling a mod fuck up (not deserving of an award anyway, since he fucked up).

I think an award for a mod who consistently has the best/most fun/most hyped games would be cooler and more sought after. Who gives a shit if they miss a couple vote counts. As long as the modding isn't "barely above average", and everyone has a shit ton of fun, that would be worthy in my book. A few mods come to mind.

We have that, though. There's at least one Most Enjoyable Game award, sometimes two based on size.

Yeah but that doesn't account for outstanding modding though. That's more based on a fun player list and crazy levels of player interaction and excitement than on role mechanics and/or smooth modding and/or etc, etc.

Actually most of the awards do have a nickname, some are more common e.g. paragon and don as opposed to the 'Rube Goldberg' award (do you know what that is offhand? :P )

I think that's best setup? I remember seeing dramonic had it.

I think we should have a scummy showcase in people's profiles. I'm going to add that
if
when I design something :shifty:

Yeah of course not, that'd be stupid.

It'd be like a trophy box inside people's profiles when you click their name.

Exactly.

UN, would you mind if I split the 'profile box' thing into its own thread? It's kind of on-topic here, but it's really a more sitewide thing...

I'll make a thread.

Yeah Sleepythan, but it's obscure enough that people wouldn't get it, and then the other people would get sick of explaining it, and it's not funny enough to make people feel cool about having an inside joke about just how very ironic it is.

And maybe I'm wrong about that point, but it's not like I didn't realize the irony inherent in the suggestion lol

Let's change that to
Red
, btw? For the sake of confused scummers everywhere.

And if that's too close to what the other title, then Community Contributor could be something like
Life of the Party
or
Mr(s). Chairman/President
or
Mafia Facilitator
(sounds like a role? that was the idea at least)

But really, what separates the 2 awards? It's kinda the same thing now that I think of it.

In post 308, zoraster wrote:I don't see how it fits.

Tesla's achievements and his abilities as a showman demonstrating his seemingly miraculous inventions made him world-famous. Although he made a great deal of money from his patents, he spent a lot on numerous experiments over the years. In the last few decades of his life, he ended up living in diminished circumstances as a recluse in Room 3327 of New Yorker Hotel, occasionally making unusual statements to the press. Because of his pronouncements and the nature of his work over the years, Tesla gained a reputation in popular culture as the archetypal "mad scientist." He died penniless and in debt on 7 January 1943. Tesla's work fell into relative obscurity after his death, but since the 1990s, his reputation has experienced a comeback in popular culture. It's not a question of if it fits, it's more of a question of how well it fits, or if it fits well enough for people to actually "get it." You just demonstrated that it possibly doesn't fit well enough, which was the reason for my original assertion that something more generic be considered. Tesla really was a boss though. He's got my respect.

In post 329, zoraster wrote:I think he's saying basically a "Best Overall" award. It's not a bad idea theoretically, but I think practically it would be very difficult to differentiate from paragon and don corleone. Also, I kind of like that there are two "major awards" so to speak, and this would basically take its place.

Except I'm badass at both finding scum
and
being scum, and am I gonna win a scummy for either of those?

Welllll, all things considered, probably not, because relatively speaking I haven't been around as long as some other nominees and they probably have more friends on the scummy steering committee and judges and such. :P

It'd be -way- cool to win that award though, over two other fictional guys: one who's more badass at scumhunting, but not so badass at manipulating, and the other vice versa. I'd treasure that win. And then again, there's nothing to say someone can't win both Paragon and Jack in the same year. But if both of the players winning Paragon and Don sucked at the other category, a dark horse could take away Jack, and that'd be awesome.

It'd also be awesome if both players were strong in both areas, and both were nominated for both, and one won one, and the other won the other, and then it'd be a nail-biting contest until the final winner of the Jack of All Trades was announced at the very end. Because fuuuuck yeah, that's what I'd like to see in a scummies contest! :)

In post 361, The Fonz wrote:So here's the thing. There is a best setup award, but it typically goes to pretty complicated closed setups that are super fun once, but, by the nature of the beast, can't be re-played.

Meanwhile, we have the Open queue, which is a fun and overlooked area of the site. There are also a number of smaller open games being played in the Micro Queue. Creating a new open setup which proves to be fun and balanced can benefit the site, and indeed the game of mafia beyond it (consider smalltown, the various C9s and E7s for example) for years after as the new setup can become a 'standard.'

Therefore, I propose we add a new category 'Best New Open Setup' to honor those who come up with ideas which enrich the game of mafia in this way.

I love this idea.

Making setups that can be replayed over and over is not only harder, but it adds more value to the site.

Like for instance, once someone "retires", never to return to that account, it should be considered being awarded to that person.

i.e. Flay hanging up the holsters and moving out into a new chapter of his life, etc.

Meh. It's kinda like a farewell present.

Nobody walks around wearing the golden fedora and looking snazzy (and indeed it would look snazzy), to me it's just like something you would put on their coffin as it gets lowered into the ground, to honor their memory.
