The Pokemon Nuzlocke Thread

A squabble of people in the facebook chat were doing these so I figured we could open it up to the whole site.

Nuzlocke is a concept developed to up the difficulty of any pokemon games. There are three basic rules:

1. You may only catch the first pokemon you encounter in an area.
2. If a pokemon faints, IT IS DEAD. Just kidding! If you are too attached to the pokemon, you can just put in a PC box labeled "dead" or something.

3. You have to nickname each pokemon you catch. This ups the emotional attachment.

There are TONS upons TONS of additional rules and variations that you can add. It's your game, so as long as you stick to these basic rules it's ok I guess? No one will be judging you. ^_^

AniX: It was an Unown H. I was urged to name it hitogoroshi but that is 11 letters and "hito" just didn't feel right. It's Hidden Power is Water and I don't know the base power.

No nuzlocke tonight guys! I did beat White's Elite Four though, and caught all three of the Musketeer Trio. Virizion <3

Maruchan's death was tragic. His Quick Attack got a Bellsprout down into high yellow, but he was at the point where a Vine Whip from the opposing Bellsprout could kill him. Not taking enough time to evaluate the situation, I Quick Attack'd again, and it didn't KO the Bellsprout (screw you lying health bar!). We lost a valuable member. RIP <3

I'm nervous for Bugsy, because I rarely beat him the first time on a regular run. Obviously the scyther is the threat; I have plenty of moves to deal with it (Amrun's ThunderShock, Isa's Peck, Korts's Rock Throw, kdowns's Ember) but I don't want to lose anyone.

Any tips?

Revival! I'm going to start anew on HeartGold again.

RULES

1. If a Pokemon faints, it cannot be used again and will be placed in the "Dead" box.
2. After Poke Balls have been received, the first Pokemon encountered in an area is the only one I may catch.
3. Nicknames must be given to each caught pokemon. My scheme for nicknaming Pokemon is to set my master Spotify playlist on shuffle and nickname them after the first artist of the corresponding gender which pops up.
4. If the first Pokemon encountered in an area is one I have already caught which is still alive, or evolutionarily related to a pokemon I have already caught which is still alive, then it does not count.
5. My battle style is set.

Also, I'm going to save the Route 33 encounter until I get Headbutt, because I don't particularly want Hoppip and Headbutt there gives me a 80% chance of Heracross or Spearow. Update 6! Caught an Oddish in Ilex Forest, which is the best result barring a headbutted tree, which would've been nigh impossible considering the Headbutt tutor is in the forest. That annoying Farfetch'd puzzle. After I got Headbutt, I went back to Route 33 and I encountered...A HERACROSS!!! It was a tough thing to catch but I did it. Unfortunately, that means Natalie will lose her spot on the team, but she'll be waiting just in case in Storage. I also got a Spearow from Headbutting trees in Azalea Town. When I tried to look up the percentage rates for encounters, I found this confusing chart no help at all. Donald will be losing his place to Parry. Now I'm just going to work to grind them up to the levels of my other team members!

Lillipup is one of my favorite Pokes overall, and awesome in B/W/B2/W2. And I don't really like the Pidove/Tranquill/Unfezant line, as opposed to Pidgey's line or even Starly's. And usually I like the cat pokemon but Purrloin is my least favorite (Skitty, Meowth, Glameow, Purrloin)

Didn't get a chance to play today, because I had a paper due...I'll now begin working on that paper, lol.

Update 7! I decided to give up on grinding for now, so I proceeded onward. I rushed through Ilex Forest to get to Route 34, because M83 was playing and I wanted a Poke named after him. However, my first encounter was female so I ended up with...Beyonce the Drowzee? Not going to be a member of my team, but it's better than a Ditto.

Goldenrod City, so big, so much to do. Went to the Game Corner, played a few games of Voltorb Flip, and grabbed an Abra which I named Lena. Lena went to Storage.

I proceeded north to Route 35, to do more training. Parry had a close call with the Firebreather's Magmar, but everything was OK. Caught a female Nidoran which I named Brittany.

On Route 36, there was a Nidoran♂, but Parry was so brutal that he Fury Attack'd 5 times and KOed him.

Now it's time for just a little bit of grinding before Whitney!

Klazam: I really like Crobat; I used one in White 2 and it went really well. Plus, until like level 24 all Gastly has to attack is Lick and Night Shade, and I wanted some coverage.

Update 8! Even though I didn't have to do much grinding for this gym, I miss B/W/B2/W2 experience mechanics. It seemed a whole lot easier to go from 5 to 60 there then from like 5 to 20 here. :/

Yay for Parry evolving! Fearow is uglier than Spearow, but I still really appreciate Fearow...I'm weird.

Update 9! Did the Bug Catching Contest, and the first thing I encountered was a Butterfree, which I luckily caught.

Next I went to take on the Sudowoodo blocking my way, and...disaster struck. I don't have much that's good against Rock in the first place, but for some reason I stupidly sent out Nelly, and a Rock Throw took her out.

Heracross's Brick Break killed it (I would've caught it if possible and placed it in the "unusable" box). Brittany will be replacing Nelly.

Pretty short update but I wanted to do the Bug Catching Contest today, and I had to let you know of the death. I was really looking forward to a Crobat ;_;

Sorry I haven't updated, lots of other things to do (if even those get done, lol. zzzz)

3rd gen is always really hard for me. Roxanne is pretty easy, but i've had troubles with every other gym leader in various playthroughs, only to be not so challenged by the Elite Four.

However, 3rd gen is my favorite for so many things. Pokemon (Skitty/Spheal/Absol), music (trumpets!) and just the region is the coolest IMO

yes. the panmonkeys are nasty. I kind of like the -sage line but they still didn't make my top 30 from that region.

FINALLY UPDATE 10! I know my sig says I was taking a break, but I realized this thread was picking up again and I want to stay in touch with the Minecraft community. Plus I wanted to see the results of PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING. But otherwise, yah I am taking a break.

Anyway, I began with Brittany dying to a Stantler. Poor thing. Lena replaces Brittany. I thought I would have a Rare Candy available for a quick level-up, but apparently not, so I headed to Ilex Forest to teach Lena Headbutt.

DARN STANTLER. Lena falls victim to one of those dern pseudo-psychic stomping deer. Her replacement makes a surprise return...Donald! Fortunately he only needs one level to grind.

I finally move on to Route 37, where it is now morning. This means a 60% chance of Pidgey, which is okayyy, but I'd much prefer a Growlithe or a Stantler.
The results are in and...Pidgey! Boo! Additionally it's male and Adele was playing

Missed opportunities...anyway, Mark is caught and sent to Storage. One of the Beauties on this route had a Clefairy which used a Metronome-created Drill Peck on my Heracross...luckily he survived.

Made it to Ecruteak City, and that is where my journey ends for now.

Update 11! Yay for Donald evolving!

In the Burned Tower...A ZUBAT! YAY WE CAN BE REUNITED! And an Adele song was playing and Zubat was female! Unfortunately, that means Donald is stored again, poor thing.

But now I have a bunch more grinding...

...whilst doing so, Adele died to a--wait for it--Stantler.

Donald returns again.

I think if you're choosing not to allow stored pokemon, then yes, you will be stuck with five until you reach a new area. But, as Nuzlocke is so flexible, it is ultimately your choice.

Anway, I allowed duplicates in an attempt at Diamond I did during the summer and ended up with four Bidoofs. :/

You could even do a rivalesque challenge, where you use your team to battle on a simulator after each gym or something like that.

UPDATE 12???

I'm rewatching the Pokemon anime, and I was inspired to revitalize my HeartGold Nuzlocke. Today I finished grinding to Level 25, and we took on Morty. With Crunch Raticate, it was a breeze. Jenna evolved, but still has the lowest HP on the team

Now we go to that Route west of Ecruteak and begin our journey to Cianwood!

On Route 38 I was hoping for a Tauros or Miltank, or even a Snubbull or a Magnemite...but nope, I got Beth the Farfetch'd. Weeee.

As I fished in Olivine, I was hoping for a Staryu or a Krabby since I would get the Lake of Rage Gyarados, but I did not fail to get a Magikarp. I'll keep it for now, since I need a pokemon to Surf. I used a Rare Candy so that it could evolve into Gyarados (in the Pokemon Center of all places, lol). Unfortunately, I missed evolving at Level 20, so I can't learn Bite until Blackthorn...

I cleared the Lighthouse fairly easily, so now it's off to Cianwood!

I haven't updated, but right now I'm at Cianwood and I lost Claire (Quilava) and Jenna (Graveler), which were crushing blows. On the way I caught a Shellder, a Tentacool, and a Krabby (Shania). I replaced the two team members I lost with Donald (Raticate) and Natalie (Gastly)

I'm afraid my mechanical, systemic playing strategy is hurting me - I'm trying to raise all my pokes to Level 35; unfortunately, Ian was killed by a Farfetch'd on Route 48. In my search for a new team member, many a Pokemon has perished to the Pursuits of Fearow and Tauros. I'm currently trying Beyonce the Drowzee.

I raise my pokemon to the level of the highest pokemon the gym leader has. Although this is now tricky because Jasmine has Lv. 35 and Pryce is Lv. 31. But I got a new Heracross (Kimberly) to train up, so that's kind of useful.

So yeah there are SO many Water types. Like just before I quit for the night I lost Guy-Manuel the Tentacruel at Level 31. Obviously I've also lost Natalie the Haunter and Pascal the Ampharos, both of which were devastating and happened in the rival battle in the Goldenrod Underground Warehouse.

As you can see it'll be a lot of grinding (Clair's highest is Lv. 41) so I'll update much later. Luckily I have the Exp. Share so things will go somewhat faster?

I don't get how people can play without loss, though. Like so much of the fun is playing with Pokemon I normally wouldn't play through the whole game with. I don't think I've actually used a Swinub, Heracross, or Shellder in the actual game. If you grind your pokes so high, then you just get to play with your favorites again.

Mahogany Town (this is a sketchy one, but the only pokemon you can encounter in Mahogany Town are those Geodude, Voltorb, and Koffing in the Team Rocket HQ that are on those traps. I think they might Selfdestruct by default though)
Route 45, right after Blackthorn City, but you want to catch a Phanpy there...

And yeah the Water pokemon are crazy.

I don't know where the move relearner is, but gyarados learns icefang which is hecka more accurate. and there are tons of places to get a heracross, if you're lucky.

I'm going to tackle the first of what I hope to be a series of Nuzlockes. Basically I'm going to go through the games I have, from beginning (Sapphire) to end (White 2).

SAPPHIRE NUZLOCKE (AND EDGIC?) - Working on Route 105, I think (the one with the beach, and Mr. Briney and PEEKO). Naming conventions are Latin (for example, Treecko is the Wood Gecko Pokemon, so Google Translate tells me "gecko" is "stilio" in Latin). My starter selection was done randomly.

Also, don't forget -- if you caught a Poke, it dies, and then you encounter another of that Poke further along, you have the choice to catch it as your first encounter or count it as a dupe encounter.

He really is the tricky one. With Brawly you might luck out and get a good poke in Dewford Cave, or you can just skip the gym for a bit (depending on your level cap rules). Wattson and Flannery aren't worries if you've picked Mudkip like any rational person would. But Norman, being normal type and all with SLAKINGS, is tricky, and there's really no new routes between Flannery and him, unless you want to count the desert.
