This is not true. The Delver deck that just won the last SCG Open was $456.72. That is expenisve. Just because it's not as expensive as last standard/legacy does not mean it's not expensive. We are back to jund/mythic consciption prices.

We should draft Unhinged/Unglued.

[edit] also, most boxes are $100 plus shipping online, about $120 in stores (around here anyway)

Operative word in the initial sentence is MOST. Delver is expensive because it effectively NEEDS the playset of Snapcaster and Swords du jour, with Glacial Fortresses and Seachrome Coasts making up a hefty chunk of change as well.

Decks off the top of my head in Standard that are sub-$200, landbase included:

Heartless (non-combo version)
W Humans
U/R Delver (depending on the build)
G/B Rock
W/b/u Tokens
RDW (or the bastardized version that currently exists)
Pod (again, depends on the build)
Zombies
U/G Self-Mill
Non-Huntmaster Wolf Run

Of course, you can make any of these archetypes as expensive or cheap as you want, if you're willing to be creative. For U/R Delver, I've played against a build that ran Charmbreaker Devils and Artful Dodge as a late-game win condition. It was a pretty solid deck, all things considered. Probably going to attempt a weird version myself with Stuffy Doll in it for teh lulz

Just bought the cards I needed for Blood For The Blood Pod. Minus most of my sideboard, and I have to use Hunted Ghouls over Diregraf Ghouls, and Doom Blades over Go For The Throats, and
another Bloodline
Hex Parasite over Precursor Golem, but it'll make do for kitchen-table until early next week when the rest ship out. Then next week maybe try going to a FNM?

Also, I paid $40 for sets of Geralfs+Gravecrawlers, which is probably slightly overpriced (Graves being around $5 but Geralfs being $4) but I thought it was worth it for the convenience (also, $4 is roughly shipping anyways so).

I want to make a deck with:
4x Creepy Doll
4x Stuffy Doll
4x Inquisitor's Flail
4x Vanguard's Shield
4x Into The Maw Of Hell
(insert 17 other cards and 23 lands)

or something to that effect

Yeah, that's a lot of mana-intensive cards for a 23-lander. If you had Green for ramp, maybe.

I'll second making cheap archetypes - Delver is one of the easiest things to replicate on a budget and still be decent (in Standard). You can get into other formats on the cheap too, but I wouldn't expect to win 2 mans.

Isn't the necessary core for making Delver work the most expensive part?

In standard? You can run delver without Snapcaster, but even if you wanted snapcaster, a playset isn't too expensive ($20). Again, I talk M:tGO prices, that's all I can play, my area is really dry for sanctioned paper M:tG.

For instance, I run my delver with delvers (of course), stalkers, stromkirk nobles, then all the necessary U/R instances, and runechanter's pike. Your meta mileage may vary though.

Oh, online.

Yeah the Delver build LSV just won his WMCQ with was like.. $560. Playset of Snapcasters is like $90 alone.

Ouch. Paper hurts...

I'm usually the person who can't stand to by digital content (music, games, movies). I love having the boxes, instruction manuals, art. And while I do own paper M:tG decks and played it for years in school with friends and at a LCS who hosted tournaments, something about M:tGO appeals more to the 25 year old adult in me. I can play any time I want, it's 1/5th or less the price, and it's stupid easy to find any card you want (once you know which stores to frequent).

If I wanted to play paper and get 75% of the enjoyment I get out of M:tGO, I'd have to drive an hour (I live in the farthest northern edge of Los Angeles county, about 45 minutes away from the major cities), only play on weekends, and you have to start talking about the gas cost, late nights that I can't quite put in like when I was younger, and trying to convince my Fiance that it it's worth doing (she plays casually with our paper cards, but I can't get her to touch her M:tGO account).

I just wish they would finish M:tGO v4 sooner rather than later, but maybe they're taking the time to get it right this time. M:tGO as it stands now is about as fast and intuitive as windows 95 would be to anyone born in the 90s.

Windows 95 isn't that bad....

But yeah. I feel your pain with regards to paper. It's an hour for me to the nearest LGS that does anything worthwhile, and Walmart or KMart are my options for buying cards. It sucks, because me and my friend want to find other people who play but there's really no way of finding said people when there's not even a LGS here to begin with, let alone one that does anything like FNM or Prereleases.
