For you paper players, what are your opinions on booster boxes in standard? For someone going from M:tGO to casual paper standard/FNM/occasional saturday events. I was considering buying a box each of Innistrad/DA/AR for my fiance and I. I figure it's a good way to get playsets of the good commons/uncommons, the occasional tradeable rare/mythic or two, and have enough cards to make decks we can play each other with/take to FNM. What would you guys do if you were starting from scratch today, and you had a budget of anywhere from $100-$300?

Depending on where you shop sure. I have no qualms with that really. Amazon isn't too bad as far as tax and shipping goes, though I'd check my local shop as well. So, disregarding the monetary investment 3 boxes would be, or rather, comparing that to what it would cost to build up your playsets of commons/uncommons for two people to make a variety of decks, and those people just starting out in paper. For instance, in M:tGO it's dead simple to build playsets of cards because they cost a penny each to maybe 10c at most, and there's no shortage of dealers. In real life, you don't have instant full access to a dealer with unlimited supply, and paper cards might cost 25c a common.

It's probably better to search eBay/craigslist for playsets of commons+uncommons from the set, which I think will run you about $30 per playsets per set, then buy the rares you want.

That said, opening boxes is fuuuuuun.

I may also suggest just buying a fatpack or two of DKA, since the set isn't that strong and there'll be a ton of repeats if you buy a box since it's a very small set. Plus it'll give you guys some lands (which I know are easily obtainable regardless) and deck boxes/spindowns which could be useful. You can also skip buying a DKA box altogether and grab a 2013 core box in about two weeks or so, since it'll run you about the same price (plus shiny promo at participating LGS-es!). Or both, if you have the cash to drop on 4 boxes/3 and fatpacks.

I was clued into buying playsets of unc/com via ebay. $25-$30 a set doesn't sound so bad, and I can just get rares in singles/trades. I think I'll go that way, and save buying boxes for group drafts.

I think buying boxes is meh. Mythic rares have fucked the magic economy. Used to be you would be able to buy a box and have reasonable expectation of pulling your money back out of it. Now, I would be much more inclined to buy singles for a specific deck if I were to spend any money on cards. Or draft.

Essentially you get 4/5 mythics in a box. There are 16 mythics in innistrad, But only 3 of them are worth anything. I'm sure someone could do the math for you, but it's not in your favor to pull anything decent.
