I haven't played Hack but to my knowledge it's little different from early NetHack. Tried Rogue though.

I prefer barbarian to valkyrie for ease.

You don't need most of them most of the time. Look for good equipment, curse-test it with your pet, swing at stuff. If you're playing one of the solid roles like val you should be okay for a while, at least long enough to figure out the rest.

Kick gray stones before you pick them up in the future.

Careful dipping into the fountains in Minetown, if they dry up it will anger the guards.

If your new character has the same name as the dead one shopkeepers will mistake you for them.

You can get all kinds of nifty pets really early on with a wand of polymorph.

What's everyone's favorite role?

I found this program called hearse that trades your bones files to a server for other bones files it has received. You get someone else's bones like on NAO without having to play on NAO.

The y for moving northwest and the y for saying yes I want to attack that shopkeeper could maybe use two different buttons.

What role are you playing? That's the most important factor distinguishing characters.

I really hate dwarves and always kill them on sight, because I don't like what they do to levels when left alone with a pickaxe, but I've been playing lawful characters and more than once have been left to die by an angry lawful god mid-prayer.
