I figured it all out.

These features should hopefully be in 1.4. Here are just some of the interesting ones.

Entities (such as Cows, Minecarts & Ghasts) will be able to travel through Nether Portals and End Portals.

Entities will pass through instantly, but at a longer "cooldown".
There are no restrictions, any entity at all can travel through the portals.
Will allow fire burning entities like blazes to leave the nether and potentially burn things.
Portals will teleport an Entity relative to where it entered.
Added new potions:

Night Vision potion.
Invisibility potion.
Now hides the nametag
Mobs do not see you until you bump into them.
Turns mobs invisible too.

Zombies infect villagers now

The villager is immediately turned into a zombie
On Normal difficulty, there is a 50% chance of infection and on Hard difficulty there is a 100% chance of infection
Infected baby villagers turn into baby zombies
Baby zombies are 50% faster, don't age and don't burn up in the sun
Infected villagers will turn in to villagers again if you throw a Splash Potion of Weakness at them and right click on them with a normal golden apple.
Villagers can now like and dislike you

Villagers who dislike you will refuse to trade
Villagers will dislike you more for killing their friends or allowing them to die
Depending on how much villagers like you, they will start to offer you better trades
Trades may be made permanent again or last shorter/longer
Added Corner Stairs
Heads can be placed for decoration

Skeleton, wither skeleton, zombie, player and creeper heads.
Can be placed in the same angles as signs.
Can be hung against walls.
Can be used as hats.
You'll have the skin of the mob on your head, but only for the first layer.

Some of these sound really cool (I left out the Wither boss part since you guys probably already know it). Though I think the Villagers like/dislike thing will get annoying.

Here's the best part about the update though:

Added Potatoes, Baked Potato and Poisonous Potato.

Isn't it possible to make bigger portals though as long as you keep the proportions?

The gate is amazing. Sand/gravel doors aren't exactly easy to implement, so putting iron bars on top of that and synchronising a second triple extender is a bit crazy. Clearly, I need to step it up a bit.

(also from my testing even worldedit can't do bigger nether portals without them bugging out, so you'd need direct access to the region files on your own computer, and be decent at using MCEdit... and never cause a block update next to the portal.)

Alternative plan: use toomanyitems/the give command to obtain the actual "portal" block (the swirly purple bit).

Doesn't work, I tried that already. You can place one, but if you place another next to it they both vanish.

It's possible to do them in a checkerboard pattern though. Make a larger portal like that.

Orientation shouldn't matter as long as the entity still fills the space.

It's not an entity, it's a block. And the orientation problem is that it isn't (wasn't?) stable.

No, the entity that's using the portal.
Idk, I've fiddled around with portal blocks before and I've had no problems (other than not being able to be placed next to each-other). I don't see why you would be having problems.

Also, I like how one day I randomly decided to name the town Vanilla town and everyone else just kinda caught on :V
