I don't think it's absolutely necessary that titles are "earned". If that were the case, well, there are plenty of amazing people who have "earned" titles who don't have them.

If the title is good enough and it really suits the recipient, I think it should be given anyway.

I wish people would stop being so damn stingy with titles. They aren't awards. They aren't really "earned" or not. It's just when we have a good title for you, you get one. I don't mind if we avoid giving people titles for being BAD (see Reapercharlie's many attempts to get a title), but I'm tired of this thought that you have to be some sort of grizzled veteran to earn one. Yes, this means that sometimes someone who's been here a few months will get one when someone who's been here for years hasn't, but that's not really the point.
