Yet Another Dance of the Title Fairy: Change Up

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Sun Nov 04, 2012 5:05 pm

Post by TheButtonmen »

Title Fairy Policy:

1. Accounts must be at least six months old before they can be nominated.
2. There is no requirements for nominating someone.
3. Self nominations will not be accepted.
4. Nominations based on avatars will not be accepted.
5. Recipients must approve of the title.
6. This thread is for title discussion only.

How Titling Works:

Step 1: Somebody posts a nomination
Step 2: Scummers discuss the nomination and think of alternatives.
Step 3: Once a nomination gets five supporters I will either approve it or explain my issues with the title.
Step 4: Once I approve a title I will contact the recipient confirm that they approve of it.

What's a Good Title?

A title should subtly or not-so-subtly reference an amusing incident, playstyle or characteristic that the entire community can understand.

What's This Thread For?

This thread is only for the nomination and discussion of titles. I will be deleting any off-topic posts and will remove any repeat offenders from the thread.

Alright I'll make a post outlining my view on titles and where I want to go with this position but for now unless anyone has further feedback or suggestions I'm approving of the title
Goddammit
for Kdowns.

The other ongoing discussion was for GreyICE who has the current nominations of
Micromanagement
,
Micromanager
, Microfuse and
Shortfuse
.

Thoughts?

UberNinja - Quality over quantity. If you nominate a single title and take the time to explain it, discuss it and propose alternatives if the community isn't sure about the original it is much more likely to go through then if you just nominate multiple titles with one liner posts you never mention again.

Umbrage - Improve your posting, just posting a gif might cut it in 62 but not in my thread.

Everyone - Stop circle jerking and teeheeing about how much you dislike a poster, the next person who nominates someone for a title as an insult is getting removed from the thread for a while. We have 62 for that the general herpderping and feeling clever this thread is for title suggestions and discussion.

In post 171, Korts wrote:And before I get banned for trolling, let me assure you that I mean it as a real nomination.

For better or worse, you're part of this community. But an all-positive title doesn't suit you, and I don't think your past should be whitewashed like that. If your title is to be a fair representation of your on-site presence (as is the purpose of titles in my mind), your divisive persona should be referenced.

Asstoot was meant to do that while giving you credit. You don't have to like it, but I think that it's the best title you have been nommed for thus far.

I'm okay with the suggestion and explanation titles do not to be entirely positive in nature, for instance Ani's title has a decent bit of a self-deprecating humour in it but is over-all a good title. However UN has since then stated that at this time he doesn't want that type of title as it well in his rights so leave it be for now and either propose different styles of titles for him or just drop it and move on to someone else.

At the moment the rational for the age requirement on titles is that we want posters to establish themselves before we start titling them, it also provides a check for staying power of a title. If a title is good now and it won't be relevant for them in a month or two when they hit the six month mark I'm doubtful that it's a really a good title.

Thoughts?

Since everyone seems to be really slow on the uptake I'm going to make this clear the next person who comes here solely to complain about someone being nomed or to use my thread to oh so cleverly be passive aggressive towards someone is being removed. Zoraster and Izak speak words of wisdom you should all listen to them, this thread is for titling I don't care about whatever drama or ill-will you feel towards each other.

As I outlined when I took over the new process is extremely simple and streamlined, I'm just here to do the final paperwork. After people finalize one or two variation for a title it only takes me about ten minutes of work to make a call, pm the recipient and setup the custom title. I have no qualms about increasing the rate at which we give out titles. I think of the whole title fairy business as a fun, community driven side event for the site rather then some super serious and prolonged process.

Enough discussion to reach a consensus on one or two variations of a title, five scummers supporting it and my approval are the only requirements for a title, time isn't a factor at all.

That's 5 supporters for Ides or Mash and as previously stated it has my approval which means it's hit critical mass.

Good discussion on the Om title, I just did a light pruning of the most side tracked posts. Om just chill out you won't get a title you don't want the final product will be run by you before I do anything with it, judging each step along the way just sidetracks stuff, delays it and builds ill-will.

All right abuse of power time.

I'm stopping you all here and shelving all discussion of a Korts title for now because frankly it's starting to hurt to read. If a title isn't working just let it go, Korts is a colourful enough fellow that sooner or later someone will think up a hilarious and amazing title for him and I'd much rather give him that then whatever comes out the current ham handed attempts to knock square pegs through round holes.

I've deleted seven more posts about Korts title and you guys keep going eh?

If you guys want it so much well fuck who am I to impede the will of the community? If doing it though we're going with the best of the bunch, it previously got the required amount of support, I like it and Korts liked it.

By the power invested in me by my delusions of grandeur and these fancy dancy wings I hereby give Korts the title of
Luddite

The issue is it's only said in real life, there isn't a pattern of that being said on the forum.

If I've missed out on it being a thing on MS then please point me to appropriate threads because I'd happily be proven wrong but while I'm not a stickler about titles started on off MS meet things as some previous Fae have been (see Kdowns getting Goddammit) I still want titles to be based off stuff that is at least some relation to MS.

Outside of the TF thread the phrase except when he does has been said in relation to Pie exactly twice, it might be extremely popular in the scumhouse in NC but until it carries over to the forum it's not really falling under my jurisdiction.

For the nth time, there is no such thing as deserving or not deserving a title.

Also I am okay with titles using content from SE because scummers can read it if they so chose to even if it's a "hidden" forum.

Let me be very very clear folks because obviously some people are pretty slow on the uptake.

Anyone who comes here just to say that someone doesn't deserve a title or to argue that titling someone will encourage bad behaviour is going to removed with extreme prejudice.

Not a fan of the the Noraaa title nom because putting someones name under their name really just doesn't look very good.

The quadz title appears to be unfounded and dead on arrival unless anyone else wants to chime in?

Alright I really like the idea behind the Chevre noms, they've gotten the support but it's scattered across multiple titles.

I'd love to hear some feedback on what you guys feel the top 2-3 possibilities are before I make a call.

I'm in no rush to get a title and I'd be uncomfortable giving myself a title even if it was community supported.

I'm declining the Bad/Hardass title noms;

TheButtonmen (7:21): I'm declining hard/badass
TheButtonmen (7:21): one of my standing policies is no profanity in titles
TheButtonmen (7:21): I already quashed happy as fuck when it was brought up for gorkat
TheButtonmen (7:22): I had a good discussion with korts/shea back then about profanity in titles
TheButtonmen (7:22): and my policy now is titles are't the time or place for it
TheButtonmen (7:22): also mith put the pg rule into effect for sigs so I assume that means titles too
blargerer (7:23): that is the policy supported by us too. I'm just not sure I count hardass or badass as being particularly profane.
TheButtonmen (7:23): if it was someones title who wasn't me (aka the Titlefairy) and it had lots of support I'd let badass slip under the profanity barrier
TheButtonmen (7:24): but as tf I don't want to ever have any ambiguity / it used as an example

As for the nom if he keeps it up and it's a noticeable trend then by all means feel free to rib away, I'm happy to give out pretty much any titles that get the required community support and isn't too odious.

Any further ideas for ActionDan's title?

Right now it's got the support and it's got some basis but it feels very superficial and unattached. While it's factually correct and he has posted about going to Princeston / being gay neither of them are defining qualities which I associate with him or his play/posting style.

Alright the discussion has pretty much died off so I'll mull over the UN titles and should have it good to go when I'm free tomorrow evening.

Normally I'd be all over this but unfortunately I'm posting from my phone and on the road until tomorrow afternoon. Keep up the good work and I'll be around to finalize stuff as soon as I get the chance!

I'm pretty okay with the
Frog
nom for DRK, I'm finding it a lot harder to grok the
Cheezborger! No Coke!
nom but that may have to do with the fact the linked clip doesn't work in Canada.

I'll let the DRK nom sit overnight and see if anyone has anything else to toss in and go find a work around to the Hulu nationality restriction and return tomorrow.

Since no alternative suggestions popped up and I've got no glaring issues with the title I'm pushing the

Sudo's nom hasn't hit the five threshold yet so I'm going to let it lie for now.

Now of course I will inevitably forget to remove it next scummie cycle because it's now attached to a non-scummie title so expect to have to bug me in another 9 months but until then everything should be good.

I've got no major qualms with the SK nom, it's got the required support and it's starting to look like the discussion is going in circles.

I'm pushing it forward.

I'd have no issues at all with awarding that title to UT.

Bert's got the required support for
Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra
but
Metaphorically Speaking
was getting some support when the discussion died off. I'm going to wait a day or two to see if anyone wants to make any last second suggestions / arguments about it but if not I'm going to move forward with the original suggestion.

I read (and keep current) on every single game in coney island, theme park, road to rome, mayfair club, and new york. I keep up on about half of little italy and central park. I've read almost every post in mafia discussion. When a game ends, I'm already talking about the results before the players themselves are.

Also it's "Cabd"
If you're bothering to correct my spelling clearly you haven't been reading everything!

Archivist
still seems pretty lacklustre as he's not actually archiving them but instead just reading copious amounts.
Every Breath You Take
has also gotten support and I like it a lot more so in a stunning abuse of power I'm going to unilaterally decide to push it forward.

I'm really not a fan of how the Mastin thing has kept playing out given that my entire stance on the titling process was to make it quick and easy to avoid long drawn out discussions going in circles. However at the moment given that it's the only game in town and not drowning out other title discussions I'm not quite at the abuse of power point at the moment.

Safe Behind My Walls
hit the required 5 supports and Mastin seems to be okay with it.

(I can't unsee that image, either. :P) Though the meaning behind the title might not be immediately obvious, it's there. It
does
define me a lot. It's not obvious, its first meaning can send off the wrong impression, but if you get the actual meaning...you GET it. So, probably not the best title...but one which I am quite willing to accept.
So we're going to run with it.

There's been some interesting comments made here recently about title policies, my role and how the process is working which I'd like to address.
In post 2702, mastin2 wrote:For what it's worth--I like The Second Coming as a title, and if Buttons decides to go that route, it's good, but Buttons contacted me about Safe Behind My Walls (and not The Second Coming), and I said that would be okay.

So basically, not my choice at this point. Buttons gets to make the final call on the matter.
That's not entirely true, each title fairy has their own vision of how this whole thing should work. When Oman handed the reigns over to me one of my goals was streamlining the entire titling process to help get titles handed out a lot quicker and with less discussion. As part of this I made it so any title which got five supporters and the recipient's approval was pushed forward rather then having the title fairy make the final call about each individual title.
In post 2680, Kublai Khan wrote: I think Buttons needs to exercise his authority. Abuse of Rule #5 is causing the spirit of Rule #3 to be violated. People, like mastin (& there have been others), are constantly refusing perfectly fine titles because they want to nudge towards a preferred title.

The Titling on his site has been a fine tradition of "hey, we as a site recognize you as having made a great, funny, and/or super interesting contribution to this site. Here's a title!" to which the recipient responds with "Hey! I don't find that title insulting! So be it!" Then the Title Fairy acts and all are happy.

Now lately it's a series of manipulative jockeying of "no.. that's not quite right. Try again, peons! I DEMAND BETTER!" and the fun is dead.

This happened on your watch, Buttons. Either fix it or let it be your shameful legacy.
However KKhan isn't wrong here, in my attempts to address some of the previous issues which lead to title nominations stagnating I've opened the door to others. While minimizing the role of the title fairy in the process has worked fantastically at times (we've had multiple titles go from initial nomination to me pushing it live in under 48 hours) it has also also let to situations where we've had title nominations going nowhere because nobody made the final call to end the discussion.
In post 2688, Mr. Flay wrote:Hence why we should stop renomming people right after they reject one. Okay, you didn't like it, see you in six months when you've done something new and different for us to title off of.
This would certainly solve the problem and isn't the worst idea but I agree with Faraday that there are better ways of addressing the issue then making this an explicit rule.

Overall I don't think that these issues are a symptom of an inherent flaw in the current titling process or the result in scummers trying to have too much control over their title but rather it's a failure on my part.

Going forward from here I need to be more proactive in ensuring that the thread isn't preseverating about a scummers nomination and in reminding myself that the perfect is the enemy of the good when it comes to pushing titles forward.

On that note I'm happy to award Mastin2 the title of
The Second Coming

WTF.
KK's post was his opinion about one of the titles mastin was nom'ed for, your post was an attempt to be funny.

Overall I don't think a nomination being similiar to an existing title disqualifies it and I don't generally agree with the rewarding bad behaviour argument against titles. However given that the extreme similarity to an existing title does somewhat weaken the nomination and we are discussing violations of site rules rather then posting or playing styles I'm not exactly awed by the nomination.

This thread isn't the place to argue about the merits of lurking.

I'm not thrilled by the title not because of any concern about rewarding bad behavior but instead because it's just decidedly mediocre. A lot of people lurk and simply putting lurker in his title seems incredibly unindividualized and bland.

Barring any last second suggestions I'm going to run with
Hammering Hammered
later tonight or tomorrow morning.
Routine day with a dirt cheap brush
Then a week goes by and it goes untouched
Then two, then three, then a month
Then the rest of your life, you beat yourself up

By the power vested in me by some farcical aquatic ceremony, Atë and delusions of competence I hereby give Guyett the title of
Hammering Hammered

That's a no go, titles must remain profanity free I'm afraid.

That being said I'm sure there's other ways you could communicate this idea.

My fault when I was resetting Scummies, it's fixed now. Hoopla's birthday title has that icon instead of words so it shows up on the list as a blank spot which makes it identical to the no custom title option (see figure 1).

Anything that involves getting rid of "GD is my wingman" seems like a terrible idea because that is one fantastic title.

Sadly people don't generally tend to notice when I abuse of power their titles. :(

Takes a lot of fun out of it.

I'm still around!

There's just been a complete dearth of new noms and ironically the one we did have people just kept waffling on.

Skullduggery seems to be off point a bit, it sounds more unscrupulous then being tricky.

No, I don't have anything helpful to say.

In my defense five is a very hard number to count to. :P

I've got no huge issues with it so I'll run with it when I'm home tonight.
