Orbiting just bought us 7W for Yule, not realizing that the 2p version was a hack. Is it as bad as it looks? We're going to have friends over tonight to play it with 4, but had hoped to be able to play just among the two of us.

If the the player count was capped at four any other suggestions?

We've already got Dominion + expansions, Power Grid, Blockers, Blockus, the bean game + expansions, Citadels and Pandemic.

Race for the Galaxy, Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

Don't get TTR if your gaming group is experienced.

I still recommend Kingsburg

It's also a more casual game like Catan and he said his gaming group was experienced.

Exactly. TTR may not speak to resource-management junkies, but it's a perfectly enjoyable game.

Meh. I guess maybe, I just think it'd be way more enjoyable for someone who hasn't played many other games. It'd be like me busting out Catan when I am with people who have played tons of Game of Thrones or Puerto Rico.

I prefer TTR to both of those game, honestly, and I like both of those games. I don't much care for Catan. But as in every case, knowing the people you're playing with makes a big difference. For instance, my family plays a lot of games, but I'd never introduce Ameritrash games to them as they wouldn't really care for them.

It's not like there's a single progression tree for experience in games. Catan may be "basic" compared to Puerto Rico, but TTR's gameplay is different from both. If anything it might be more like parts of Risk or Twixt, it's mostly board control with a smattering of random resources.

Lords of Waterdeep. It's one of the most fun worker placements I've had.
Also, if you like 7W and Magic, I would highly recommend Seasons.

Space Alert (best 4 or 5 player) and Ghost Stories are great co-op. Tigris and Euphrates is a pretty fun 2-4 player.

It's a mechnical mess, but the themeing makes it a fun way to spend an evening. You need to get in to it but it's rewarding.

Plano box, not jewelery. And it's base, two city expansions, Lurker at the Threshold, AND Miskatonic Horror. :3

Space Alert. Those memories *shudder*
It's a fun game, but dying in a fire in space because I forgot to jiggle the mouse to prevent the screensaver...

Space Alert is a game that seems really interesting to me. It's just that my game group is the "Think everything through for 20 minutes on each turn" type, and I'm not convinced that snap decisions would be wise.

I'm not sure if card games are on-topic here, but I really enjoy Fluxx. I bought myself a Cthulhu Fluxx game for Christmas and it's SOOO good.

Not as serious, but any new party game ideas to play at a non-alcoholic New Year's Eve party? Cards Against Humanity will definitely be played, and we got some Walmart-style party board games to play as well. I want to finagle some 1000 Blank White Cards and Mafia in there, but it might be an uphill battle.

As much as we love mafia, if your group doesn't already play mafia, I'd suggest The Resistance, simply due to the lack of player elimination.

Shadow Hunters is also a great Mafia-esque game. It has elimination, but it's easier to get into.
Bang! is also on a similar vein.
