Bang! has worked well for our group of casual gamers.

Also yeah, Resistance/Conspiracy may work better.

I never hear much about Shadow Hunters outside of here. I think it's pretty good though.

My favourite game for New Years Eve (or any other party) is Celebrities. It's a combination of articulate, charades, and memory, but with the content more personal and modern, because you write the names yourselves - so it can be niche and nerdy, bawdy and broad, family-orientated and mainstream, depending on the tastes and interests of your players. It can handle larger and smaller groups, and is easy to understand for gamers and non-gamers. I'd say always divide into two big teams rather than more smaller ones (keeps everyone involved), and limit it to writing 7 names per person if you have more than ~8 players, or 5 names per person if you have more than ~12.

I don't even think its in print anymore. Which sucks because I've lost a couple pieces.

What looks like an illegal science build, she's lost war twice, and she didn't build the first part of her wonder in the first age? Oh, this is a disaster, that puppy is not very good at 7 Wonders.

i dont' think that's an illegal science build, but this was also her first game of 7 wonders. losing war twice isn't particularly bad though.

It looks like that the first age has been played out completely and none of the second. That means the only Tablet card in play is the Scriptorium and given the identical cost for the two science cards that seems like it's likely anyways. The illegal part is you can not have identically named cards in play (an easily overlooked rule). First game, common mistake, etc, etc. (And you're right about war in 4+ player games, in 3 player games it seems to me that you have to get involved in some war or you will lose).

it was a 4 player game, and i don't think I would have allowed her to play two scriptorium cards, though it's possible it slipped by.

Since I had the game nearby I looked, could only have been two Scriptoriums in a four player game.

So I received this game Catacombs, as well as Ascension during the Christmas week. Ascension is a fun deckbuilder. I heavily prefer it to Dominion. Catacombs seems absolutely silly and I hope to play it shortly.

Ascension is one of my favourite board games. I need to buy a copy, but it is such a simple, yet fun premise.

Ascension is terrible over two players since it's so random what comes out. So many games where all monsters come out or all buying cards come out or all high cost cards come out and you built your deck wrong only because of the randomness of the game. If you want an alternative to Dominion I suggest Penny Arcade: Gamers vs. Evil.

I completely disagree. I much prefer it at 3 or 4 ahead of 2. Yeah, it can be random and a bit frustrating sometimes, but that's ok. I like the randomness of the game, it forces you to adapt.

It takes so very long to change your deck composition and the things on the board change so frequently it's often an exercise in futility.

But no one really should tell people what they should or shouldn't enjoy, if you like it then good for you, just not my cup of tea.

I've been hearing good things about Thunderstone, if you like that style of game.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

Ascension still has the issue (even with expansions) of get 4 or more Mechana constructs = Win.

Thunderstone 2 (the rerelease) is a lot better than Thunderstone 1. It's another good deckbuilding game.

I was underwhelmed by Cosmic Encounter. It's really nice, in that it has changing mechanics, but my group is willing to Trade settlements to get both players to 5, which seems like a play flaw.

I think it's an interesting game that becomes more interesting as you play more. But it is one of those games where if everyone else doesn't want you to win and that becomes their primary goal, you'll lose. My gaming group plays it monthly, but I usually beg off.
