End of year cut off is better, that way you don't get noms from the same ending date in 2 different years nominations. Which is just weird. I mean it's only a day in the difference, but still.

It's more like 15 months, scummies ceremony is usually up in March.

January 1 is just a LOT easier to remember, too.

Also, what happens if a game ends before deadline in one time zone but after it in another?

Use one timezone for deadlines, captain obvious.

Just use the later deadline, it's not a big issue.

There is a very good reason to make the deadline for noms be the last possible moment of the year of noms, so 6 hours before EST time (i.e. if it's 5:59AM EST Jan 1, then a game would still qualify that ends at that moment because it's 11:59PM Dec 31 in some part of the world)

That is the only clear-cut, fair way of handling things. If someone was in a best game of 2012 and a game that ended in 2013 beat it, it's such a slippery, crappy slope that will undoubtedly generate bitterness. It's more fair to have a player wait to be judged for the year of their completed game than let them be judged earlier and possibly influence an actual 2012-completed game.

Gist of the argument: Slippery slopes are slippery and there's no need for one so just make it clear cut, and make the cut be that a game's completion time stamp is what determines its completion year. Simple.

In post 0, The Fonz wrote:So here's the thing. There is a best setup award, but it typically goes to pretty complicated closed setups that are super fun once, but, by the nature of the beast, can't be re-played.

Meanwhile, we have the Open queue, which is a fun and overlooked area of the site. There are also a number of smaller open games being played in the Micro Queue. Creating a new open setup which proves to be fun and balanced can benefit the site, and indeed the game of mafia beyond it (consider smalltown, the various C9s and E7s for example) for years after as the new setup can become a 'standard.'

Therefore, I propose we add a new category 'Best New Open Setup' to honor those who come up with ideas which enrich the game of mafia in this way.

Quoting Fonz post from his thread.

I think awarding people for innovative open set-ups is good? We have one for best set-up which is best closed set-up, basically. So um yeah, I think it's a good idea.

Proof of concept please: what game(s) would have been properly nominated?

Things like Diffusion of Power, Black Flag, Semi Nightless, presumably?

I suppose a problem is often a number of people can work to tweak a public open set-up. How would that work? All could get it? The main people?

Hmm. Most open setups are designed or tweaked by an entire team of people, not to mention the fact there really aren't THAT many open setups being created each year (as opposed to the sheer number of closed setups that are run). I dunno, I guess we can toss the idea around and see where it gets us. Best Setup does tend to go to theme games, so we actually get normal games that are overlooked as well. I'm not sure how to deal with it.

I love this idea.

Making setups that can be replayed over and over is not only harder, but it adds more value to the site.

Best Theme Setup and Best Normal/Open Setup, maybe? Mutations would go with Themes, obv.

I'm not sure, given the existence of the current Normal rules, you get interesting normal setups. Nor is creating new and interesting things what you want to go for with normal games in general - I'm not sure it's a good idea to encourage mods to dick around with normals rather than just concentrate on producing a solid, fun game of basic mafia. Whereas innovation with opens IS a good thing. Best open or MICRO setup? That would probably work better imho.

I'd suggest with new opens the thing to do would be to credit the person who made the original proposal, and if there's a really significant tweak that clearly improves it, credit the person who suggested it as well. Like, so two of four would have gone to both me and Kelly Chen.

Micros can be Normal OR Open OR Theme, though, so that kind of blows up that breakdown.

I think combining Opens and Normals means that an Open will
usually
win, while giving an outstanding Normal someplace to be judged. (edit: And I agree with you that there aren't likely to be enough innovative Normals to generate their own category).

A little birdy told me that the Scummies usually happen at the same time as the Oscars... :shifty:

Is this still the case?

It's supposed to be, yes, but the writing staff was less than punctual this year. I've been on a writing spree today to try and catch us up, but there's a lot of shit to get written. UT is coming over Saturday and we are gonna try to burn through whatever is left.

Read one of the old ceremonies. It's essentially just write a bit of filler fluff as if it was a real awards ceremony.
