Why should i play fire emblem?

A friend of mine always tells me to play Fire Emblem. Since there is a new one coming out, i thought i would ask the people of the internet what the deal is with FE. What kind of in depth mechanics are there. How do you play like a pro.

So i heard the demo for the 3DS FE came out. Without spoilers and basing only on what you have played, how is it?
(Live in the UK where we don't have the demo yet)
