Board Games!

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

Yeah, we'll play CAH for an hour or so, and Quelf for however long, but I can't really expect much longer.

So, board games with the family. When you play Monopoly, you don't play with the Free Parking lottery rule. All that does is turn a 2 hours game into an all day event.

Also, stop playing Monopoly, it's terrible.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

Played Cosmic Encouter at BaltoMeet again.

I fully intend to buy that game soon. It's fucking brilliant, and with so many races, you'll never get the same game.

It's a great game; I have it with the expansions. The problem I have is that I can't stop my sister from hugging to victory every time we play.

I read an article the other day about the fact that most people play Monopoly wrong, which makes it longer. When someone lands on a property and decides not to buy it, it is supposed to be auctioned off.

Yeah. Auctions usually get forgotten, free parking gets thrown in, and it extends the game. Most people forget about component limits- once the bank runs out of houses, they're gone. Plus, if they drop low enough, the last ones get auctioned.

Yeah, if you negotiate, you can trade colonies. She and Miyu would just negotiate every time they had an encounter, and both go to five. Very difficult to stop.

That depends pretty significantly on them having negotiate cards in their hands AND attacking one another (which is usually completely random). Them winning with that strategy, while not impossible, seems unlikely to happen consistently.

The problem is, you only need two people at 4 to encounter each other and have negotiates. Getting to four isn't that hard, since there's little reason by to illustrate on as allies in an attack. Unless the attacker is smart enough not to ally with everyone.

Monopoly is terrible but anyone who thinks auctions change the game is wrong. Properties are incredibly underpriced. No sense in no buying something

Auctions for the last houses can change stuff. But generally, there's no good reason not to purchase every property you land on, even if you have to mortgage to do so.

I got the Survivor Board Game, no pieces missing, for $2 at a garage sale. So exciting.

Also there was Pokemon Monopoly at an auction but they sold a huge pile of boardgames and some woman bought them all. Defeated.

But I did buy another pile which made me pretty happy. Had children's favorites Lucky Ducks and Don't Break the Ice, plus Smart Ass, which is a great party game. And TWO SPIROGRAPHS AND A LITE BRITE WAHHAAAAH CHILDHOOD RELIVING HAPPENING SOON

So I got Risk Legacy a bit before Baltomeet and just finished the 4th game tonight with grimm+reck+fate+ythan and I am actually to the point where I can't sleep because I'm obsessing over it that much. We've opened a secret packet with more minor game pieces after every game through a combination of luck and wanting to do things that open stuff and the most recent one is amazing and I want to play it SO MUCH.

We
saw
it, then Fate & I threatened to grab it and tear it open, so Gamma hid it in his car, which I then found again, and he hid again.

But why would they include it, then? If you're never supposed to open it anyway, then couldn't the same effect be achieved at lower cost by simply not including it in the box at all?

You're never supposed to open it. The game directions will never tell you to open it. It's hidden under the plastic insert in the box. Some players will never find it. But it's there. What do you do?

Or you open it after you've finished your campaign or things are getting stale. Or, you never open it.
