Sounds good to me.

I think my character is on Leviathan right now, but I think lots of people have also claimed Gilgamesh. I'm happy to relocate when Phase 4 rolls around.

I might try a new class/starting location if I switch to Gilgamesh during Phase 3. I was Lancer around New Gridania last time. I guess you have a solid sense of all of them because you were in 1.0?

Which city is your Gilgamesh character near, or do you already have the ability to travel about?

I think I'm going to make some kind of mage this weekend. Maybe Arcanist->Scholar in Phase 4.

Beta is free, but there will be a monthly fee come the official release. It'll probably stay that way, too; FFXI is still P2P.

Ah, bummer. I think the mage for Limsa is the Arcanist, which isn't available yet.

I guess I'll make a Thaumaturge and be in Ul'Dah.

I'm still divided between playing on my fancy laptop and playing on my PS3. One cool thing is that so far I can play the beta on both versions. I wonder if the game will be free to try at launch, or if buying the game initially will also be necessary. I already have the crap on my computer and PS3....

Looking forward to the PS4 version.

Bummer because it means I won't be able to play with you. D:

I guess you could always just come visit me, though. :X

Do you have a better sense of how the Attribute system works, btw? It seems like it basically forces you to choose whether you want to be gimp melee or gimp magic on each character, kinda subverting the premise of the class system? Or are they redistributable by some mechanism?

I think there's supposed to be a 2 week delay between Phase 3 and Phase 4, isn't there?

I did hear that this run was supposed to be a little longer, though. Something to do with testing the Duty system.

I'm happy that the game culture is already changing some. When it started it reminded me of when I made starter characters on WoW. Everyone was very stoic and kept to themselves.

In this game, after the first duty (i.e., raid/dungeon) when no one quite knew what was going on, everyone has been very group-oriented and friendly and social. :]

Hooray! Beta ends on Monday, unfortunately, but we can play together this weekend. :]

Tans should make a chart of all the character names in the OP. He can steal the formatting from the Starcraft thread. But it may make more sense to do this after the character wipe.

Yep, it's now totally confirmed that Gilgamesh is, coincidentally, also the gay server. All the gay linkshells are switching to Gilgamesh for Phase 4.

Fitting that it was coincidentally also the MS one. ^^~

He told me, but for some reason you had already logged off, and I couldn't friend you. You'd think it would let you send friend requests to people who aren't currently online...

Anyway, by the time he told me, I had also already finished all the beta content, so my little brother was playing around with it mostly.

I would think that you would be able to friend people even if they were offline, but maybe they are going to fix that in the open Beta
It could be one of their anti-RMT policies (e.g., similar to AH being accessible relatively late and so forth).

I think we should definitely get a linkshell, but I'm not sure we'll have enough for a Free Company, though people running around with the SCUM tag sounds cute.

I'm planning to join the gay Free Company (NOCT) absent a MS one. You can only join 1 Free Company, so....

Of course. This is SE. In XI, PC/PS2/PS3/Xbox360 all play together.

In fact, the reason there's no Xbox One version is that Microsoft demanded dedicated servers.

Ha, how the other half lives. :]

My laptop can play it on Standard better than my PS3. I have an NVIDIA card, though, and Dan has Radeon.

Also, my little brother just traded in his 360 and a bunch of games for a PS3 so that he'll be able to play, too. He'll probably play GLA -> PLD, so we'll have a tank. :D

Well, it's already confirmed that the open beta would only be a week. The issue is that they also announced a time-gap between open beta and early access, which would imply that either open beta or early access will be less than a week.

It didn't feel like grinding up to level 32, which was as far as I got in Phase 3. Grinding's kind of in the eye of the beholder, though.

If you're curious about it, you might want to try the one-week beta and see how you like it. You can transfer your progress to release if you decide to play.

So what you're saying is that when I FINALLY get to play, you'll already all be level 30+ or something? =_=
I think you'll still be able to join the beta.

You can get to level 30 in a week.

It looks like pre-order registration might happen on August 8th. If you haven't gotten a pre-order code, consider contacting your retailer if you want all the pre-order toys. :]

I got mine immediately upon Amazon pre-order.

Just a warning that it seems like people are predicting that Gilgamesh will fill up pretty quickly due to everyone and their mother choosing that server.

No, I just really enjoyed beta and live on forums that spread information and rumors around. They really need to release the game so that I can focus on other things.

BTW Mafia Sepia is way uglier on my work computer. I wonder if this is why sepia is so polarizing?

If you guys didn't know, PC users have been able to download the client ahead of time for the previous several days. EU PS3 users should have already received their codes, and NA PS3 users should receive their codes very soon (e.g., within the next hour or so, if SE's "24 hours" claim is to be trusted).

Finally taking a break after playing for like 10 hours. :X:X

SE has added a queue feature, so joining Gilgamesh in a timely fashion will be less tedious now. Gilgamesh was the most popular server on Phase 3, so it's still popular now.

If possible, try to make a character on Gilgamesh tonight. Tomorrow open beta character registration will re-open, so it will become a bit harder to join.

All of the servers have been closed and open at various times, though some like Gilgamesh and Leviathan have been on the fuller side due to online communities choosing them as "their" server more often.

Just keep trying. Your characters carry to launch, so you'll have someone on the MS server forever after.

Or if you just want to sample the game, maybe it doesn't matter as much.

Please do not call me that.

@ Others, SE has added 5 new NA servers since the start of Phase 4 to help combat the overcrowding. They also added 3 new JP servers, though it doesn't look like the JP servers experienced any major issues. It looks like they encountered more NA interest than they had anticipated....

I have an extra PS3 pre-order code that may or may not work (probably leaning toward "not," because these codes are linked to particular e-mail addresses) if anyone wants to try using it.

I'm in the Rough Trade Free Company now, which is on Gilgamesh. I love it and really don't want to leave. This is also why I left the linkshell-to-become-FC that you invited me to.

Also, you're going to a Legacy server, and I don't personally want to play on a Legacy server.

They chose it because Gilgamesh is gay with Enkidu.

I think the free transfers are only actually available to Legacy players and tans has mistakenly assumed that they applied to everyone. Everything I have seen has pointed to paid transfer 3-4 weeks after launch. But they may have announced something new that I can't find.

AP has the game pre-ordered, I think, so he'll be able to get onto Gilgamesh Saturday when the servers open unless he experiences a lapse. ^^~

Ended up at 44. I tried Garuda, but I died about 234234 times. We had an extremely annoying pick-up tank who whined and whined and whined and didn't listen to anyone and then left. <_<

Might try Darkhold either tomorrow or on Wednesday after maintenance is over and log-ins are "fixed." ^^;

There are some really terrible ones.

I had one wearing level 41 equipment in Sastasha earlier who didn't even tag additional mods. Healer took hate with a single cure.

I think it's because people level to 50 with FATEs and don't know how to play their job.

I finished the main game, too, as of a few hours ago. I tried one pick-up Ifrit HM fight, but we wiped twice and then a DD left. That's all for me until the end of the month. :]

I'm planning to get all my classes to 15 next. Then I'll pick another class to take to 50, probably Warrior.

The economy doesn't make much sense to me. Everything important can be NPC'd, and the main uses for gil are gilsinks like transportation and equipment repair.

I know people on the official forums have made cases that deflation will occur as the influx of players wanes, because each new main questline runthrough brings in a lot of gil. I guess this means I should keep everything liquidated.

Papalymo and Yda have really terrible VAs. Uncommonly bad.

It's sad, because the VAs were so great in 1.0. Especially Yda. But then SE was freaked out at the game failing again.

But Y'shtola's voice is great, and Merlwyb's is OK, too, if you can let yourself enjoy the campy melodrama. Limsa ftw.

I've started with crafting in the last few days. Actually enjoying it so far. My goal is to get all handjobs to 15 and all landjobs to 20 and then pick. :]

Last night I got my Ifrit weapon! Hooray for me! :D

Yeah, you should focus on war/magic jobs til the 15th, then maybe deal with crafts after that. You can probably hit 50 in 2 weeks without much fuss. Dan is already over halfway there in a week.

Yeah, it would be simpler if it automatically managed all of your gear sets for each class.

But it's pretty trivial to press the "update gearset" key whenever you change equipment. It's triangle on the PS3 controller; dunno about PC.

Hey, it sounds like there will be free server transfers, but that the free server transfers will last only 5 days.

If people like dram/drambf/AP's kevin want to join us, it may be actionable without spending a gillion dollars.

I have my Ifrit weapon, all Darklight accessories, and all AK main pieces, so I'm going to try to do Garuda HM in the next few days if possible. I'm also trying to get my CNJ up so that I can party with Dan, though he'll probably hit 50 before I can catch him.

Tans, is it the SMN relic book, or the SCH relic book?

Not sure about the dates on the free transfers. There's a thread on the FC message board.

My guess is that eventually people may want different gear sets for different things within the same class/job, so that may be the reason for what they did. But there are definitely better ways to handle it.

I hope they improve it before 2.1, which isn't expected until late November or December.

Congrats :]

You may want to level the certain classes for your cross-class abilities, but I think the main things Arcanist gives a BLM are Physick and maybe Virus. I don't know as much Archer (I think that's the other one?), but Raging Strikes is pretty handy.

I actually got WHM yesterday. ;)

1. CNJ gives a unique mount at 30, so I want it anyway. Already got that, though, as of this morning.

2. CNJ gives Stoneskin at 34, which is needed for SCH, so I need to get WHM/CNJ to 34 at the very least. I already feel kinda gimp for not having it for groups. I'm 31 right now IIRC. But I do have Swiftcast, which is absolutely non-optional.

3. WHM will be able to use some of my Darklight equipment, anyway, so I may as well get it up.

Oh, I misread that.

You need to complete the conjurer and arcanist class quests through 30 and 15, respectively. You can unlock arcanist in Limsa. After that, the unlock quest is in the conjurer's guild.

WHM can equip abilities from arcanist and thaumaturge, so you will want to unlock both of those classes at the very least. Arcanist gets Eye for an Eye in the 30s; Thaumaturge gets Swiftcast at 26.

AP, you may want to unlock arcanist while you're in Limsa and level it to get Virus. It's acquired at pretty low levels IIRC and is a decent debuff that can help out a bit on bosses. The plot will take you to Ul'dah before long, where you can get thaumaturge unlocked.

You should obviously join Maelstrom.

It doesn't really matter. Choose the one that has your preferred flavor. The stats for the items they offer are comparable, and those items will be deprecated quickly, anyway.
AP wrote:Also ew, the main story is like WASTE ALL YOUR GOLD TELEPORTING AROUND TROLLOLOL
1. Use favored destinations. Put one favored destination in each city. This will halve your teleporting costs.

2. Return is free. Exploit Return.

3. Don't teleport unnecessarily. Chocobo porters are extremely cheap, and you probably have FC chat drama to catch up on for 2-3 minutes anyway. The only unavoidable cost is that getting to-from Limsa will take at least 150g per change due to it being on an island (unless you exploit return). (You have to teleport to somewhere like Horizon when it's set to a Favored Destination to make reaching Limsa as cheap as that.)

4. Be efficient so that you don't have to travel around any more than necessary.

Gil is currently only really needed for teleporting and armor repairs at high levels, plus a few one-time investments; most endgame gear is farmed using non-gil currency, though I think there's some high iLevel gear that's craftable, too. Personal player housing will also cost gil.

Yeah, quest XP will take you all the way to level 40 or so without having to grind at all on your first class. At that point, you'll finally have to use Fate parties or dungeons to grind a little bit to keep up with the main story.

It's efficient to use your resting bonus on your highest-leveled class that is unfun to level, since the bonus is based on # of levels rather than absolute amount of experience (i.e., so you get much more at level 49 than at level 1).

It was a guild run, so we felt awkward making him leave, even though we were also doing PLD WHM WHM SCH DD DD DD DD, so we couldn't afford for any DDs to mess up at all.

But I may take you up on that if we need a good DD slot next time. :]

I think BLM has a lot of trouble with that fight because needing to charge to cast spells makes it hard for them to avoid the AoE without their DPS suffering. It's also hard to avoid stuff if you aren't already moving when the AoE indicator is displayed.

Poor BLM. :[

Dodging bombs is a nightmare in phase 5 IMO because of the lag. Only the 3-row bombs, though.

1. First, you have to stand at the DANGER BOMBS to bait Titan's AoE so that it doesn't land in an awkward place.
2. When Titan's AoE appears, you run to the safe bombs.
3. When Titan's AoE is going off and the DANGER BOMBS have not yet exploded, you run INTO Titan's AoE animation and the bomb explosion animation.

This is very unnatural! It is necessary because the animations occur after the damage has already occurred.

Weight of the land is probably really bad for people who have to charge their attacks like SMN and BLM. If I couldn't already be moving at the start of it, they would hit me frequently. For my part I just start having out (hopefully with no idiot running toward me on the other side) and I make it out appropriately.

I've heard that a secret to helping to overcome Titan HM latency issues is to cast a spell or ability after you dodge the plumes on your screen. This force-updates your position on the server and gives you a little more time.

Also, jumping apparently does not update your position until you land again, so jumping is very bad.

I'll add you if I see you on, Beli. :]

Everyone except Tans (Iec, Dan, AP, Mara) is in Taint, which is currently full. You're welcome to join if it interests you. Tans is in FINAL, the Reddit FC.

I don't think we have a MS LS right now because so many are in Taint, but I'm sure someone could make one.

In post 325, Iecerint wrote:Dodging bombs is a nightmare in phase 5 IMO because of the lag.

BTW, this was total bullshit and unnecessarily complicated. Ignoring it FTW.

I'm going to race WAR to 50 now, because our raid leader is trying to sneak it to 50 and become an off-tank.

It's relevant at level 50 when lots of people do content as a certain class to help the group, but then are unable to get equipment for their other classes because people who have BRD at level 4 greed the DEX equipment.

But I agree with you before endgame.

Just got the SMN Titan HM win today. 3 relics down. :D

More content and further UI improvements are coming with the version update in December. Free Company (i.e., guild) housing is being released at that time, and player housing is supposed to be added in update 2.2 (~March or so).

Gear progression is vertical so far.

Reck, I don't understand how your concerns about being able to change classes is related to a perception of meaninglessness. If getting one class geared is an accomplishment, surely getting all of them geared is also an accomplishment? I can understand wanting to play around with different races, though. FFXI handled classes the same way as this, so I guess I'm biased on this point in the opposite direction.

The Crystal Tower, which will apparently be a recreation of the Crystal Tower dungeon from FFIII complete with Xande and Cloud of Darkness boss fights, is being added in update 2.1 in December. It is 24-man content. As I understand it, the design will be an alliance of 3 groups of 8 who complete pre-boss content separately and join up for the boss fights, and the separate paths will differ in structure (e.g., maybe one path is a battle gauntlet, another focuses on puzzles, etc). It was originally planned for release at launch, but was delayed. I suspect they had trouble optimizing it for PS3.

Races have very small statistical differences, but these differences do not increase in absolute magnitude as levels increase, so they are negligible at endgame.

But you could use that as an excuse to min-max yourself multiple characters.

I actually find it kind of exciting. :]

Though my myth from the T5 drop is best in slot, anyway, so I don't know if Turn 5 really gives me anything too fancy.

They made her twister mechanic more forgiving; it used to be kind of impossible to dodge depending upon RNG.

I think she was designed to be impossible pre-nerf (though they have claimed to the contrary). SE didn't want people to complete all of the available content too far ahead of the 2.1 release.

I thought Blue Garter was just after the nerf?

There were some other groups that killed her before, but they took advantage of an exploit where her scripting got messed up and she just stood there and let people kill her.

The queue can be really slow for DPS. You should probably try to queue with a healer and/or tank to make the queues quick. Try joining a Free Company and finding queue-buddies that way.

I should note that at all item levels the gear tiers generally go like this:

1. Crafted HQ gear + slotted materia (expensive)
2. Dungeon gear
3. Crafted gear that is HQ xor slotted.
4. Other (e.g., for your first class, quested gear)

In other words, dungeon gear will be better than most things that you can buy, unless you are comfortable spending a great deal of money.

Of course, dungeon gear does rely on dungeon drops, and AP doing it for you obviates the cost issues, but ye know.

Fate, if you're thinking of taking WAR up to 50, I recommend you try leveling PGL to 12 and GLA to 22. You'll need GLA to 15 to unlock WAR, anyway. PGL12 will get you Featherfoot (evasion bonus cooldown), Second Wind (self-heal cooldown), and Internal Release (critical hit bonus on fast cooldown); GLA22 will get you Flash (AoE GCD hate-spam that uses MP and can be used while Pacified by Berserk), Convalescence (increases-healing-effects cooldown), and Provoke (automatically assigns your enmity on target mob to the enmity of the party member that is highest on the hate list + 1, cooldown).

That's pretty much it, yes. Avoid Medica if you can help it, though, as it's going to make you pull hate. I can't really think of a need for it other than a handful of boss fights with unavoidable AoE damage. Later on WHM will feel a lot more MP stress than SCH and they will tend to pull more hate than SCH, so you'll need to manage Freecure and Shroud to make the most of your MP pool.

Before 30 tbh I think CNJ is probably categorically inferior to ACN/THM as a healer (i.e., because the MND difference isn't large, ACN/THM have better damage capabilities and better MP management capabilities, ACN can battle-raise from 22 rather than from 28, Medica is almost more a liability than a benefit, and CNJ/WHM doesn't access the burst healing abilities that set it apart until 30), and it's a little on the boring side. However, CNJ has Esuna, and SCH doesn't get the equivalent ability until level 40.

If you get bored on trash, keep in mind that you can probably safely Cleric Stance and DPS a bit during most trash encounters. This especially applies to SCH (because the healing pet can solo heal most trash encounters), but WHM can do this a bit, too, depending on the group. It's better than standing and watching, anyway. WHM will eventually get a great AoE damage spell, so both will eventually have good damage options.

At endgame, WHM specializes in burst-healing and MP/hate management while SCH focuses on damage mitigation and Aetherflow (i.e., ability token) management.

MAR is basically the same as GLA early on, except that they have an extra AoE hate-generation move in the form of Overpower, and their base damage being higher means that, modifiers aside, each action generates more base enmity.

Later on, PLD closes this gap because IIRC their Halone combo has a better modifier than the WAR's Butcher's Block combo, but WAR will generally have enough of an advantage in damage to make hate-holding on par with WAR for single-targets. (WAR will still be a little bit superior for AoE tanking, or at least for AoE hate-control.)

Of course, PLD currently has a LARGE improvement from WAR in terms of damage mitigation -- WAR only gets Foresight, but PLD gets like 4 abilities and can cross-class Foresight. WAR's Inner Beast self-heal can't make up the difference too well. PLD also has a superior stun and a silence. But SE has said they will try to close the utility gap here.

Fate, my understanding is that Second Wind doesn't scale with levels very well, limiting its usefulness. At low levels it's probably a great choice. Internal Release is a nice boost on a really fast cooldown and helps to capitalize on your moderate advantage in supplemental damage.

The Grand Company equipment isn't ever really a game-changer, other than that the level 50 weapon is a nice boost until you can get some endgame weapons. It's also nice for quickly gearing secondary classes when you realize that you converted all their gear into materia.

I don't know if Fate had trouble, but hate is relatively hard to hold in this game IMO. Archers in particular are capable of some pretty epic hate-spikes early on, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary if Nuwen drew hate a few times.

@ Reck, here's an explanation.

What do you think CNJ has over ACN/THM at those levels, other than Esuna (which SCH doesn't get til 40 and is hence clearly non-essential)?
