Server cutting edge > IRC IMO.
People who have been playing vanilla have managed to survive without it. I'm not against it until it starts delaying updates or opening a door for other slippery slope changes like all the stuff we had on the last "vanilla" server.
ETL, what mod did you use to connect your SSP client to IRC? is that something people can do client side to connect with IRC if they choose rather than waiting for something server side?

Maruchan - can you give us an estimate of how much it would cost to make it worth your while for your hosting company to script us an IRC coded into the server (i.e. resistant to update-changes)? I would 100% be willing to contribute to that, and it's the best fix for everyone I think (cause it gets Maru's hosting company some money too, which they totally deserve for all they've done for us over the many months)

there's 2 issues with this I think- they don't give tech support for minecraft stuff, and they're not really pulling a profit, so...

Yes, I know. I'm asking them what dollar amount would make it worthwhile for them to provide the initial implementation of this one feature (and no future support of it), and make that implementation profitable.

The issue is not technically that it's not worth it for Corin to do this for us, the issue is I outright refuse to let anybody here bother them with this non-issue when their concern is and should be keeping their company afloat - honestly, it should be our concern too. No other host is going to give use the kind of access/performance we have already, and
FOR FREE
.
P-Edit @ETL: you can talk in the game or via the Multicraft chat we've explained how to use several times before. Just because something is convenient doesn't make it necessary. And it certainly doesn't make it necessary to play a game. You all honestly need to talk to people who aren't playing that often when you ARE playing, or vice versa? Then get peoples' Skypes or phone numbers
OR JUST WAIT PATIENTLY
for IRC to be a practical, stable, easy-to-implement option and this won't even be an issue. Jesus.

Obviously I already consider it to not be an issue and it's not like there's any been any presentation of any viable option that isn't "wait for Craft/Forge IRC to update or go on without IRC" so I don't even know why we're discussing this.

Maestro - IRC will never be an easy, cheap, consistent feature unless it is put in through the server, because things get updated and if we're all for the latest and greatest snapshots, that means vanilla will be disconnected from the community for weeks (months?) at a time on a fairly consistent basis. That's a bad idea.
And I'm not asking Maru or his company to implement this for free. I'm saying, realistically, what would it cost them to implement this (paying for man-hours and everything). If that total is $1,000 realistically, I want that number (even if it's unobtainable to raise the money for). This is just to get an idea of whether it would be feasible. I don't know about you, but I would pay substantial money to be connected to the rest of the community on a vanilla server.
Ok, I'm sorry for those like Rhinox who like IRC and will still play without whining about this every month...but c'mon. I thought I was heavily implying this enough but I'll come out and say it if you all want me to. It's not really up for discussion. We're waiting on either ForgeIRC or CraftIRC to update to 1.6.2. That's it.
CraftIRC is already 1.6.1 compatible, and with BukkitDev still chugging along like a regular old Thomas, we'll have IRC soon enough. All I ask for is patience. Rob, you've been gone for months. Hell, the
ENTIRE VANILLA SERVER
has been nigh-on empty for a long time. Things will happen, but not overnight. We all will just have to deal with that.
