That only affects relic. I notice a glowing sword and shield on paladins, and I recognise relic bows on fellow bards, but if you're any other job, chances are your pt disnae notice.

My commend as a tank has gone to a dps who has done nothing but replace in and survive.

I farm commendations by spamming low level guildhests as a tank

and I always commend the dps that isn't a dick and attacks whatever he's supposed to when I'm running as tank
i commend the tank when i run as healer
i commend the healer when i run as dps

Be sure to pug Coil every week. It's super easy to do 1-4 now if you use Party Finder. Do this weekly.

Save your myth for a bit, then buy myth for whatever you don't get for Coil IFF it's best in slot.

Also, do Crystal Tower weekly to fill-in missed things.

As you do the above, keep an eye on hitting the Accuracy cap. Darklight gear tends to have accuracy, and CT gear tends to lack it, so you end up with low accuracy if your gear is very CT-heavy.
