Game of the Month Club (Secret of Mana)

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

Game of the Month Club (Secret of Mana)

I'd like to start a game of the Month Club. Every 2-4 weeks we pick a game and play through it as a group. Take screenshots and discuss its merits and flaws.

Right now I'm finishing up a playthrough of Illusion of Gaia. We can pick a new game over the next couple of days.

I've enjoyed this game so far. I had never heard of it as a kid, so this is my first time through it. If you're unfamiliar with this game, it is unusual in that its settings are ancient wonders of the world. The Great Wall of China, Angkor Wat, Nazca Lines, etc. It's really neat to see level design that's based on the actual architecture of places I'm familiar with.
Spoiler: Character Swap Screen
Image
One of the mechanics of this game is a character swap system (spoiler it's father son and holy ghost) that you have to use to solve the dungeon puzzles. It's a neat system, although the puzzles are fairly elementary.
Spoiler:

Also this game is really dark. That's a corpse on fire. You murdered him. With a trap. How whimsical! The story is fairly engaging and the writing is better than the average mid-nineties Square Enix game.

If I have one quibble about this game it's the controls. They're clunky and it's absolutely essential to play this game with a controller. Also the stat increase system is "you get a power up when you kill all the enemies in this area". It gets you to explore and forces you to get familiar with the controls which, while you will figure out efficient attack strategies, gets fairly tedious. Also, I wasn't super into the boss battles, but a. they're not the focus of the game and b. it's probably a taste thing more than anything else.

I've had a good time with this game. It has a unique tone and art style, and is definitely worth a playthrough.

Not necessarily

in fact, I kind of want to suggest Cool Spot for the first game :shifty:

Secret of Mana is a strong choice. It'll be a replay for me, but I'd be totally happy for that to be up first.

also I highly recommend this. the secret of mana in particular is far better with a controller.

I've been using zsnes for like 5 years now, so I hadn't looked into updating the emulator. I'll give snes 9x a try on this playthrough.

also I should have mentioned this at the beginning of the thread:

don't post links to ROMs. it's against site rules and copyright law.

So I'm an hour or so into Secret of Mana. I forgot how much I dig this game. The very first time I played this game was on the original cart, so subsequent playthroughs on emulators have been decidedly clunkier. This is the first time I've used a usb controller and it makes all the difference. The physical process of playing this game is fun now. Woo!
Spoiler: the enemies are too cute sometimes
Image

I'll probably mention this again, but I love the menu system. It's intuitive and takes the game in a different direction than the usual Excel Spreadsheets: the Game. I always hated that about RPGs. It's by no means perfect, but I love it.
Spoiler: the menu system is really swank
Image

My biggest quibble before had been the combat system, but somehow the intervening years (and the controller) have made it a lot easier and more fun for me. Can't emphasize this enough, the game is fun to play.
Spoiler: I am a mature adult
Image

I'll talk more about this later, but I love the way this game looks. The art is cartoony, but there are so many varied landscapes and unique enemies that it really comes alive and has a unique atmosphere.

If you want to do Pokemon it's going to happen without me (actually probably a good selection for while I'm in Arkansas this summer)
