I really did not enjoy Coup when I played it. It felt like it wanted to be a quick little bluffing game, but it just isn't. It's rather clunky and incredibly punishing to any sort of skill imbalance, which I think is really bad for the type of game it's trying to be.

I haven't found that at all, actually? I don't think it's particularly hard to win when new to the game. I also thought it was super easy to explain, even my mom picked it up quickly.

Edit: Citadels can drag a little bit with a bigger number, though I thought. Especially with the thingymajig role...er warlord is it?

Then I am garbage at it, because when I played with one person who had played before, one other person who hadn't, and me, who also hadn't, the person who had played before won literally every single game.

EBWOP: Oops, I guess Machi Koro isn't out yet, or at least not in stock? lol. The BGG says 2012 but it's up for preorder on Amazon.

To me it seems like a lighter, luckier version of Suburbia.

Anyone up for more BSG this Sunday?
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

Today we finally got around to playing War of the Ring, CES' favourite game, a fairly complex battle with a playtime of around 3 hours.

45 minutes into explaining the rules for movement, types of actions and how to take them, combat, win conditions and various tracks, he gets out the event card deck.

"Oh, yeah. So, the event cards are all in Dutch. It's fine, I'm sure you'll manage."

(Currently my Dutch level is such that I can recognise the words like "of" and "in". "Actiedobbelstenenvoorraad" is a bit beyond my level…)

That's okay; my computer exploded again, so I don't know that I can do Sunday.

Yeah, it's what inspie said:
actie = action
dobbelstenen = dice
voorraad = supply

They weren't all crazy compound words though, and I did learn some useful new vocabulary for every day situations, e.g.
leger = army
bevecht = combating
speel deze kaart als = play this card if

We've only just finished playing, haha; I'm not sure how long it actually was as we took many breaks. I won in the end as evil, although only because Wester gave himself a -50% handicap by starting from The Shire instead of Rivendell. It is a good game, even if it is long; and probably plays more easily if you're both fluent in the language you're playing it in.

For whatever reason I'm only playing board games involving space right now. Galaxy Trucker is probably my favorite game of all time, the campaign expansion for Space Alert is fun, and Quantum has finally supplanted Kingsburg as my "competitive game for new players". (Well maybe not supplanted - Kingsburg does have good indirect competition whereas Quantum is direct.)

Played Firefly for the first time this afternoon. I enjoyed it quite a lot, though I had to go before we could finish - it captures the feel of the show really, really well. Really want to try it again sometime now.

Played Kemet today with Gamma + quadz for the first time. I fucking loved it! The pieces are so detailed and well-done, and it basically takes the concept of the GoT board game and says, "okay, let's remove the first 1.5-2hrs of turtling and slow progression and drop you straight into the danger zone". There's little in the way of alliance-making (though that could be due to the fact we played it with only three people), but the depth of strategy and build orders/paths makes it very intriguing. Probably in my top five.

On the other hand, I was not a huge fan of Kemet. I feel like it's difficult to understand all of your options, because there are so friggin' many of them, and I'm not particularly interested in playing a 2-hour board game 3-5 more times to get to a point where I'm comfortable in my knowledge of all the options. (Plus, the detail Reck mentions is great on the plastic figurines, but makes the tiles and cards somewhat difficult to understand at a glance.)

Yeah but that's more an issue of accessibility than something with the game mechanics themselves

That's fair, which tells me that I don't dislike this
type
of game, but instead I dislike Kemet specifically!
