AFAIK, a player actively loads a 3x3 chunk area around their position. Unless he, or someone else, is in the area for the entire growth cycle, he won't see any changes.

yep. To keep the server from disintegrating, essentially, the game unloads areas if no one is in them. Otherwise you'd have areas loaded all the time, be unable to have an infinite world/map, and serious lag pretty much constantly.

Well, that's not how it used to work, because I built a melon farm on the old vanilla server and would just stop by to harvest it every hour or so and they grew fine on their own.

So crops only grow if you're near them. If you go mining, tough shit, you won't have any crops to come back to?

Around a 5 chunk radius around spawn is loaded all the time

And etl is wrong, its more like 64-128 block horzional distance that you need to be within for plants to grow

Or you could make a vanilla chunkloader. Resource intensive though if you live far from spawn

I was wrong too. Its actually a 10 chunk radius around the player. So be within 160 blocks or so

What you need to do is make sure that you are standing directly on top of the melon stalk. If you can't get up on there, just keep.jumping. Then watch them for 3 hours give or take an hour.
