SmartyPants! (Game over -- Jaguar wins!)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Apr 07, 2004 3:38 pm

Post by MeMe »

We've been enjoying this new trivia game (Smarty Party) at home for the last couple of months and I thought I'd give it a go on the site....

In (very) Short

22 spaces. 8 players. When one player hits space 22, the game is over and the person furthest from the last space is the winner.

The Particulars

The Pollster
- Each round, the person in last place (randomly chosen for Round 1) will be the pollster. I will announce the category (e.g. Gifts in the 12 Days of Christmas) and how many answers are in the category (in this example, 12) and how many answers the rest of the crew are expected to get (here, 8). The pollster will place his yes or no bet on whether the other participants will come up with the expected number of answers. The turn order is fixed, but the pollster will choose who will answer first and we'll progress through the list from there. (Note: As the person in last place is always the pollster, it's possible for the same person to be the pollster twice in a row.)

The Guessing
- In succession, each person will give a guess and I will tell them whether or not it is on the list. If it
is
on the list that person is the current "Smartypants." If it
isn't
on the list, that person is penalized as follows: 1st wrong guess: +3; 2nd & 3rd wrong guesses: +2; 4th-7th wrong guesses: +1.

Round End
- The round ends when either 1) All the correct answers have been given or 2) Seven wrong answers have been given.

Scoring
- The current "Smartypants" (the last one to give a correct guess) can throw out his/her highest penalty or, if (s)he has no penalty for this round, moves back one space. All others guessers move forward the penalty points each were assessed during the prior round. The pollster will either move forward one (for an incorrect wager) or back one (for a correct wager). Next Pollster is announced (if two are tied, then the person closest to the last pollster in turn order will be "it") and the next topic/wager number is given and we proceed. There is no "0" (or negatively numbered) space..."1" is as good as it gets -- so, no matter how well you've done, you cannot move off of the board.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
**Note: You may think that some of the answers aren't right...but even if they're not, they're close enough and we're rolling with it. Remember, it's just a silly game! NO INTERNET SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS. If you don't have a good guess, take the penalty like the honest player you are.
This game is for 8 players and the game will be tracked throughout in the second post of this thread. Please only sign up if you're on mafiascum often enough to assure me that you won't leave everybody waiting around for you to give your answer, alrighty?
I'll give it a shot. Rules seem kinda complex, but I think I've got them well enough.
And don't worry about it too much -- I'll remind everybody along the way what needs to be done next. It'll make so much more sense once you're actually playing (just like it does around our kitchen table)!
And that's eight!
Alright, ZONEACE will be the first Pollster (randomly chosen by moi).
The Category
- Most Landed on Spaces in Monopoly
10 possible answers
5 answers expected
ZONE - what you need to do is wager "yes" the other seven will get at least 5 right before getting 7 wrong...or "no" they won't; and you'll also choose a first guesser for this round.
I would just like to interject here ... at my house, Smarty-Pants is an alcoholic beverage that we make by the 2-liter-bottle for poker playing and what-not. I about flipped out when I saw a thread for it. I was hoping to debate the recipe and variations ... *sniffle*
(i thought about registering smarty-pants.com ... that's how big an inside joke it is)
I'd like to enquire about the version of Monopoly this question refers to.
The original 1935 version (not Cat-opoly or NFL-opoly, for crying out loud).
I also just got this PM which I think bears public answering...
Questions:
1. Are you allowed to trash talk?
2. Are you allowed to try and interfere with other player's answers?
3. Are you allowed to Google for answers?
1. Yes
2. Sure
3. No
Hmm, tough situation for me then. I know the squares, but I know them as they are named in the Irish version of the game (with Dublin streets.) I also know their position on the board (ie. how many squares they are from key squares.) but I just don't know their names as on the original version.
Just a strategy point...you *might* not want to let everyone know the categories in which you're clueless/superior. As the pollster gets to determine who's first, he should be trying select the start player wisely to help him hit his wager.
And shady, the game won't be won or lost on one question...the fact that the pollster is the last-place player is a game balancer (as the pollster can only advance or fall back one space on his turn).
And I won't interfere any further...
I was just making a bit of conversation. Don't let that influence you Zoneace :twisted: . I of course do not really own that many monopoly games. (Only about 3 and all wrong versions like shady's)
So what you are saying is we are waiting for Zoneace to let us know who goes first? Do we post our guesses here or they they PM's?
Yes - ZONE has to say who's first & place his bet before any guessing commences. Guesses will be public & tracked in the second post of this thread.
No. I know it'd be rather difficult to enforce, but just pretend that we're sitting in a circle playing the game. If it's not in your head, tough. Just take a guess.
On a side note...if ZONEACE doesn't post by this evening, I'm giving his spot to mathcam -- the only 'scummer who needs to be prodded less than I do. :D
