Desert is better than Island IMO, specifically because you're in control and can't lose due to one of your requirements to win sinking :)
If you're going co-op though also add Pandemic.

Reck, you should join the game of Robo Rally that's going to start next week :)
I'm also going to start Game 2 of Splendor once it gets a couple new players.

I agree, that
Forbidden Desert
is better.

I also agree that desert is better. I've played both. Never played Pandemic though, I feel like I need that one day.

So I just bought a stack of them because I've been saving like a beast and I really want all of these games:

MEMOIR 44
- Looks great. GF is ex-army, one of my gaming mates is ex-army, and two of my gaming mates are Air Force so I'm sure we'll all love it. The mechanics look great too.
CARCASSONNE
- Based off suggestions. Looks like it scales nicely.
PANDEMIC
- I've played Forbidden Island and Desert and loved them both. I love the scaling difficulty.
SMALL WORLD
- Theme looks good, army generation looks good, scaling looks good.
MUNCHKIN BASE GAME
- I have always loved Muchkin. Great game to play alongside beers. Feels as much fun with 3 as 5.
ANDROID: NETRUNNER CORE GAME
- Wow. The box art took me in, the youtube videos took me in. Looks so complex, but so worth the time.

Anyway, that's a shitload of cash done, but I'm going to look after these games and when me and the girlfriend move in together, we've already talked about a board games night and stuff like that. This is gonna be the best.

Well crap, I would have suggested
Twilight Struggle
if I knew she was ex-military. It's a fun game.

Twilight Struggle is a beastly awesome game! Although it does have its table flipping moments. 2 hours down the drain due to a Lone Gunman...

for what it's worth, oman, the memoir 44 online game is really well done (not a german language cheapo site). you can try it to make sure you want to buy the board game. I think you get a certain number of games for free: http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/

I've heard that Twilight Struggle is really complex. She's pretty new to board games and I want to ease her in.

Thanks Otter, checking it out now.

In post 1518, Oman wrote:Hey guys, I'm looking for fun 2p games that I can play with my girlfriend, and/or 4p games that I we can play with other friends. I'm looking for fairly simple games to begin, just to ease her into it. She loves scrabble, and we'll play a bit of that. Bonus points go to scaling games that will work for 2p and with a larger group.

I love King of Tokyo, Coup, Love Letters, Muchkin, and Settlers.

Guys, I'd love your advice, thanks!

Speaking of, I'd actually recommend Splendor. =P I agree with GreyICE on Carcassonne, Flashpoint, and Ticket to Ride being excellent suggestions (and Agricola is fantastic, but not a starter boardgame by any means!).

Nice selection of games, Oman! I hope you enjoy them!

BGG.Con in Dallas is coming up in about a month. It would be awesome if we could get an even larger contingent of scummers to go next year. (Is anyone here going this year? I know of 6 offhand going this year if you count myself and kristocker.)

It is a hyper intimidating board with mediocre component quality and insanely deep strategy.

By the by, just picked up my Mage Wars expansion. It's really threatening to totally replace M:tG, if more people played it I think it would. Too goddamn cool.

I played 8 minute a few weeks ago and I wasn't real impressed. I think it may have been our board configuration though. There was a lot of rivers to cross so we remained pretty clustered. Maybe I need to give it another try.

I haven't played the original version of Eight-Minute Empire but the Legends version didn't spring any such issues for me.

It is indeed sold out by this time. There's a waiting list, and historically by the time it gets down very near the convention, everyone on the waiting list either passes on the chance or gets the ticket(s) they need, but it's still a crapshoot. It's the highlight of my year and a convention my wife and I have done for 7 (?) years now. If this year doesn't work out, maybe we could get a few more familiar faces next year...

We were looking to go to PAX east or the two new ones they do but BGG is one I would probably be interested in next year. Never been to a con though.

It's amazing. And very laid back. Lots of space for open gaming, a huge game library, and it's easy to jump in games.

And zoraster, I hope you do get on the waitlist, it would be lovely to meet you!

You get some games, but not $85 worth. The value is in having access to the library, people that want to play, and a lot of new games from Essen. We've always split a room with someone (often scummers) in the past to cut down on hotel costs, and it's been fabulous.

WHen did TSQ become interested in board games?
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.
