I don't know if it predates kingmaker

but in general royals should not say setups based off RITP since it is really based off AITP

reading through rest of your changes, will let you know if i see other issues

Great, this is all just info from me not being around so long.

Also, Love Letter Mafia is a little odd to place however Great Expectations seems to me like a variant of AITP or at least based of something similar.

Could somebody go through all the setups pages (or a lot of them) and change them to look reasonable as some are just blocks of text. Look at some of BBmolla's setup pages to get an idea of what looks good and how to do it.
I'm now nearly finished whith the setups area and am planning to do the same with the roles section.

I'm going to get started doing the same stuff to the role's section as I did to the setups section. However to get started I will need to sort them all into (better) categories. My thoughts for these are:
Protective: Doctor ect.
Informative: Cop, Stalker ect.
Confirmative: Innocent Child, Mason ect.
Passive: Lightning Rod, Ascetic ect.
Manipulative: Roleblocker ect.
Lynch Based: Lyncher, Jester ect.
Cult Based: Cult Leader, Mentor ect.

First I'd divide all the roles into mafia/town/3rd party and then within those categories they will be sorted into the above sub categories. Does this sound good?
Oppinions or suggestions?

A lot of the roles will therefore also be in multiple alignment categories. As it is at the moment the roles are mostly dumped in the main category and some have not been sorted at all. I'll keep what you said in mind and I'll try to use the old categories as much as possible.

As usual I still need help from a person with SysOp or higher permission on the wiki to make some changes to the main page as it is now out of date. With me fiddling with templates I've decided to sort them all as it is hella hard to find stuff if you don't know what you're looking for.

All setup pages now have the setups template, this means that every single of the 190+ templates is now sorted into the correct categories and they are all ordered by size in those categories. It also gives some quick simple information on the setup in a little box in the top right corner of the page.

I'm working on a custom CSS for monobook that will change the wiki to become more like mafBlack. It's going to take a lot of tweaking before I'm satisfied however I may post the code here which you copy/paste into a wiki page I'll explain later. I'm doing this to get a general idea of what styles work pratically and I'll implement them in a wiki skin I'll make once I've got time.

I've finished a basic mafBlack custom css for monobook to get an idea of what would work for the actual mafblack wiki skin I'm working on. It needs tweaking and I'd really appreciate if anyone how is willing to to apply it (see OP, it takes no other skills than copy/pasting one code block) and suggest changes/find mistakes etc. Or you can just use it for your own satisfaction.

However this is just a custom css, I would be able to do a lot more with custom php/js code in an actual skin. Only problem I'm facing at the moment is some templates loading the default white text onto white background occasionaly due to odd markup.

The big problem is people not adding color:black to their special styles which causes occasional conflicts with white text on a light background. In this case I saw the same happened with your page but I fixed it by adding "color:black" which has no visable effect on other skins.

I said it because... well it has a green gradient lol

That's fine (may not look good with black/grey) however I set the body text to white so I it was contrasting very little with the green.

Thanks for offering, I'm first going to get a basic version setup (meaning I'm going to not go mad over how it looks just making it cover all the functions) and then I'll see if chamber could put it up on the wiki. From then on I will work on how it looks and fill in anything I missed. If all goes well this fist version should be complete in a few days.

The basic skeleton is done so I've started on asthetics as what I've got so far is rather plain and in some areas ugly. I've also started fixing some of the default css which causes some horendous tables to be generated (whte borders black text on grey etc.) in the wiki's special pages and log in pages. Due to our wiki being behind I'm going to wait for the wiki to update to 1.24 before contacting chamber to get it up however if you want to help hunt for problems or suggest ideas (If you really want I can give you access to the ftp server if you help enough and have experience with it so you can improve stuff yourself. I'm auto-backing up everything so if you screw it up I can announce you're a jerk and just reroll.)

Anyone feel free to suggest another color scheme or whatever. Anyway, I've made a template (called Template:SetupHistory) that allows people to dump any setup history data into one page (with the needed information) and it will automatically display the correct history data for a setup if the template is linked to the setup page. This is great for adding large amounts of history data to many setups at once as it saves you from manually editing each individual page.
Using this I'm going to update the history data of all non open games.

I've also added an easy to setup faction win statistics calculator that displays the Town-Win/Mafia-Win/3rd-Party-win/Abandoned-Games percentages of each setup. It's hooked up to the history database template so it allows me to quickly generate statistics for setups with their history stored in that template.
Due to Mediawiki's limitations it isn't automatic (you need to regenerate the template to get up to date stats, look at template:SetupHistory to understand.) however it's still a heck of a lot faster than manually calculating everything. With this I'll continue updating missing history data of micro games and add some stats to some. (Interestingly Vengeful Mafia has a 57% mafia win rate, that's pretty high.)

Still waiting for some wiki sysOp to respond here, then the main page (Now out of date) can be updated.

Yeah, if you go to Vengeful Mafia the stats are calculated with it in the "odds" section. Intrestingly enough the results are very close to what the page maker calculated they would be.

I'm redoing the setup category pages, they were each made separately meaning they have different styles and some information is no longer correct. The main page and general setups page are done, they are friendly to non-native viewers now.

Also, are there actually any active wiki moderators anymore? I've been asking for one for a while to change the main-page however none have reacted. Lots of spam pages are being left alone as well, I'm blanking them but deletion would be better.
We need new moderators IMO, the current ones seem to be doing very little. (Not the technical admins like Kison, they rule.)

After some recent changes to the wiki moderation team (Which I definitely didn't pester people to do.) I'm now part of it and I want to hear what everyone misses or wants on the wiki. It is a community wiki; for everyones use, so it would be great to know what is wanted. I've added a sidebar linking to the main areas in the forum for the wiki, does anyone want one that links to the main categories of the wiki or is that too much?

Quite a few updates I couldn't make before I was a mod:
The navigation boxes on the sides of pages have been updated.
A new easy to set up navigation bar generator. I need comments on how it looks so I can improve it. To find it and see how it works go here: http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?tit ... :SetupNav2

It works of only CSS3 meaning no JavaScript was used, it is also very easy to edit into pages with only a div element with a class attribute being required and regular wiki list syntax for the links and hierarchy.

It allows for quick access to various site areas, it's mostly there for non-scummers to direct them to the main site.
If enough people don't want it it can be easily removed.

Yes, however it's a little work.
Use <noinclude> and </noinclude> around the category syntax and <includeonly> and </includeonly> around the template part that generates the stats.

@Pysche, I'll get someone to make a page like this. I don't personally use these templates so if I were to write it I'd need to take a look.

I've not been able to update anything recently, exams are taking up my time.

In post 106, Psyche wrote:a summary:
- organize the articles in a clear manner
this will make things easier to find and browse through, and will make obvious what articles are missing or could be added

- standardize article features
right now when an article link is clicked, even if the article has a lot of content, you can't really expect anything about the sort of information will be present, how it'll be organized, or how well-connected by links it'll be to other articles, etc.
developing or sharpening and then implementing standards for various sorts of articles (eg setups, roles) will markedly improve the wiki

if you do both of these then everything left to do is creative
actually producing articles that fill informational holes in the wiki
i believe more of an emphasis should be placed on connecting/basing articles on "researched forum history" or something than on the writer's intuition, but meh
I've finished sorting all articles and have updated that area to link to all the new sub-categories. I also managed to miraculously fix the easy menu css so that's been added to all updated sections now. I'm going to tackle Theory later.
In post 120, Psyche wrote:Also, here's an idea.

There are apparently stable templates around of someone of the best Scummer wikis around (like UN's). If you made some page working as a guide to making your own wiki (which there is a lot of general interest in doing) which points to one of those templates, the world would be a clearly better place.
I'm looking into some templates and I'll create some easy to use ones with a single page explaining them all.

So I went ahead and made my wiki page the most hideous thing on earth to show what I'm working on:
http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=Wgeurts
Yup, that's right: I'm making it possible for users to change the standard wiki css per page. Once I'm done I hope to have made it possible to change everything from the background of a page to the navigation bar colors. I'm also looking to see wether mediawiki has Jquery, if so I could go ahead and add gradients and image backgrounds.

You can make templates by just calling the page "Template:-Name-".

I've made the code a lot simpler and a lot easier to build on, I can now allow changing of backgrounds to the color of links when hovered upon. First the second wasn't doable due to the code inserting inline CSS to the edited elements, now it inserts a single css chunk into the head of the html document allowing more flexibility. The first template for changing the main page body's background and colors will be up soon.
Oh, it allows gradients so you could technically make your scummer page rainbow colored.

A script has been added which changes the setup category pages to show how many players are in each setup. Instead of A being 1 player and Z being 26 it just says "1" or "26". An option for variable setups is also being added.
This change should be fully implemented in the coming few days, see Category:SetupPage for an example though.

Work has also started on adding missing roles like "goo", if you have any roles or role modifiers you want added please say so.

Made the category and updated the navigation. You can get the setup template to sort pages in it by adding "Design Contest Winning" behind one of the type parameters. Feel free to add more information to the category page itself, I only wrote a brief description as a placeholder.
Maybe adding a reference to it in Category:Open Setups would be good as well.

You can find the new category here: Category:Design Contest Winning Setups

So in 4 weeks I'm free because of holidays, I'm planning to finish my to-do list during this period. This currently consists of:
  • Sorting and categorising the Theory and Templates category.
  • Add the setupHistory template to all setups and generate statistics using it.
  • Redo the CSS template to fix some flaws (my JavaScript has improved since I made this).
  • Make the Auto Navigation Menu more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Finish the guide to making cool scummers pages.
If you would like anything done now's the time to say so.
Setup Page? Sure.
Sort Something? Sure.
Some Random Feature? Sure.
Anything you want added/changed.

What do you mean by "search by setup"?
If you mean by searching ratio of roles it would have to be done by adding that info to all the pages.
Maybe I could make a tag template to do this?

Yes.
But it's not really an elegant solution.

It'd basically involve me adding JS to replace all the old links with a new one each time the page loads. Which I'd rather not do. I'm willing to do so while you're replacing them to fill any gaps left, but it'd just be lazy (and slow down load times every so slightly for slower devices) to rely on this.

@Psyche:
How many setup categories do we need?
You'd need a seperate category for each ratio as the sort key has already been used to sort them all by size.

That's in the syntax section of the wiki, however that too needs a rewrite. And to make nice looking tables you're going to need some knowledge of CSS, which is a whole other matter.
That said, as well as rewriting the custom page colours template I'm planning on making some standard templates that allow you to add those tables like UN's except people can customise them easily through parameters.

I just realised that once I've finished updating the history of all these setups I'll be able to generate stats on the win-percentage of all the open games ever run.

Will do, they were just in the database so they were automatically used when I made the stats.

Edit: Saw you already fixed it, I had them included originally as they were already on the page before I put the data into the template.

Would you be against me just noting that next to each game in the table?
As that would be easier than redoing how the template finds pages to fit different player versions.

Werewolf Win gets accounted as scum I believe but it shouldn't be too hard to split them at will.
As for the separate ones per page, I'll have a look at it but I believe that should be doable as well with some variables added.
I'm planning to get round to this this weekend.

That's basically what I was doing except starting at Open 1.
Then I was going to tackle adding the stats to all of them.
Thanks for the help, it gets things done a lot faster.

I'm thinking I should change the stats to allow users to specify what gets registered as what to allow "Ice Mafia Win" and stuff to be picked up and not just seen as "Other".
Either that or you can manually go to the template for now and copy the Mafia Win thing to get it to show up as scum and somewhere there's a switch which you could get the stats template seeing it as mafia win.

Whoop, managed to allow there to be multiple versions of a setup to allow seperate history tables for seperate versions of the same setup. So if ever a major change is made to a setup you can now start a new history table to record the played games in.
Now to get it to work with generating seperate stats as well as making modular stat generation.

Edit: it seems something's going wrong somewhere and you have to specify a version for history to show. Going to see if I can revert that, otherwise I'll have to add the new parameters to all pages with the "SetupHistory:Database" template.

Well I found the problem and the fix, it's going to need some work though.
If there's anyone willing to do so could you copy/paste the following just before the "}}" in all the SetupHistory Databases?
Code: Select all
| Version_Check={{{Version|}}}| Version=

This will also make stat-gen easy to implement with the change.

That would be doable however cant you just make something like this:
History of 13 player...
-Table-
History of 12 player...
-Other Table-

I'll go add something to Template:SetupHistory explaining how to use the added version feature. Check Near-Vanilla to see it already implemented though.

Edit: After testing what I said I believe having changeable text for the unexpanded table will look better.

Use the parameter "Table_Name" to add a custom name now on the setup page.
So:
Code: Select all
{{SetupHistory/Database|Table_Name=Bla Bla}}

Multiball fix is as good as done though, only need to make the generator work with it.

And done.
You can now generate seperate stats for seperate setup versions as well as enabling multiball stat-gen. It's now also possible for you to make stuff like "Ice Mafia Win" be picked up by the generator as "Mafia Win".

I'll write up how to do this later but if you want to look at it yourself check Masons and Monks.

You going to have to redo all the existing stats as they'll be off with the changes. Notably I've decided to not have "Abandoned" game counted to have scum/town win rates be more accurate.
I'll start doing so.

Make an article yourself on how you think a readslist should be, I can always sort it if needed. It's your own view and a formal-standard would require a lot of people to support it and even then people could deviate. A reads list is a way of doing something, people do it differently.

And can we just shrink all the "failed opens" categories into "Outdated Opens", they are currently unused and a mess. I lack the willpower and time to research the fate of every single setup in there and it's easier to just collectively dump them in one spot.

FINALLY
All Open Games until Open 595 have been but in the SetupsHistory template, meaning that updating the history of any game is now simplified tremendously. All you now have to do is fill in the game's details in the Template:SetupHistory/Database and it will make sure it appears on the setup-page needed formatted nicely in a table.
I'll tackle the micro's at some other point in the future, they aren't as important as most are self-designed themes and thus not on the wiki. I'll also make the database fully up-to date once LlamaFluff gets round to updating the wiki page which is meant to have all open's and their status listed.

Mostly I'm looking for anyone that has a decent amount of knowledge on them so any missing ones in Category:Gambits are added as it feels lacking right now. Same for the common tells thing.

Something that could also be added is a description of what is counted as a gambit and the pros/cons of using them.

We don't, and to make one we'd either have to make some really clever web-crawler or a heck of a lot of manual input.

It's a cool idea though, it would require some form of required/automated logging of who played what game.

The current tables we have don't list what players where in which game, and the current one I use for displaying game results per setup doesn't have that information either.

As in, if you can make something that parses the existing tables and outputs said data in a format I'll provide I can help out with a template. The current tables are useless, they only display the table on that page and can't be used like the one in the template I linked selectively.

There's an archive of opens and newbies on the wiki I believe, I know at least opens has one which I recall needed updsting. I used it for the open setup history.

List of Open Games, doesn't have the player names though, that would require manual work going into each linked thread.

Newbie Game/History, Games 500-749 contains links to pages with the names and results of at least a tonne of newbies. N recently made this so it can be too out of date.

I need to also get working on organising stuff once more again. MafiaScum Wiki seems like a good idea, and I fully support a logo change as I really dislike the old one. Also if one the moderators could switch the default skin to Vector that would be amazing, that can only be done in one of mediawikis config files and as such isn't something I can do. Vector simply looks a few hundred times better than monobook(?).

MafiaWiki is the most catchy in my opinion. A meta description for search engines is also a great idea. If we could get somebody to make a new logo as well then things will have improved significantly.

Also what would you call the main page instead?

A quick to-do list for myself:
-Do some maintenance on the setups section.
-Update the history and stats for the setups.
-Find a better way to organise roles and articles.
-Make the modding section actually useful.
-Bring the mish-mash section up to standard.
-Start thinking of a way to standardise user pages, or at least make a way for them to get globally improved with ease.

There has also been a lack of article creation recently, so I've been thinking about a way to encourage that and I've come to the following:
You know how we had a setup design contest? Why not an article contest of sorts? We could have different categories such as "town-play", "scum-play", "tells", etc etc. Even though information goes out of date due to shifting meta I know that many new users look to the wiki for aid, and all information they can find can aid them. By reaching out to the competitive nature of users here we could end up with a fair number of new articles.

Was the default Skin changed to Vector Kison? Because that would make the Wiki look nicer over a hundredfold when compared to monobook.

Also how much work would it be to create a script that retrieves a users join date and other such information? Something like that would be nice when I get round to scummer pages, an automatic Join Date, Number of years a member, post-number ect.

A way to have setup statistics update automatically would also be a huge time-saver. I pushed the limitations of MediaWiki templating to make updating this kind of stuff a lot easier with the following template: Template:SetupHistory, but limitations prevent me from automatically having it calculate and display win-percentages, instead having to use a workaround (which is still faster than manually calculating but I'm sure this can be improved further).

I'm not super familiar with MediaWiki. Is this something we can have it parse from a data source, or do we have to manually plug it in for each user? I can easily retrieve the data, just not sure what format we would need it in.

Simply something that if provided with a variable (username) could go retrieve data for that user and then output the data of its kind as a string.

So I'd make three templates for instance: GetJoin, GetPost, and GetYears which would call on the script.
If I were then to place {{GetJoin|wgeurts}} on a MediaWiki page the script would provide a string which would then be placed where the template is. Really the main challenge is getting text from a page to be seen as a variable, but that is doable via inelegant means I know and probably via some nicer ones.

My horrifically ugly coded CSS customiser thingy for scummer pages shows this is not necessarily the case.

Like, it looks like this Near-Vanilla setup page is pulling historical data from this Open database.

I would think that if that is possible, we could do something similar where we have a page with username/user ID/join data.

How long would it take a browser to load a page considering it would have to check whether or not each individual user is the one the template wants on this page or not?
If it's too long the script I mentioned above may work easier.

Quickly dumping here some to-do stuff:
-Move all pages in Category "Royal Mafia"to "Royal Setups"
-Fix the SetupFix thingy
-Finish the new navigation for Setups
-Add a work-in-progress bar for the new navigation system
-Nuke the old Setups categories.

In other news, Template:RolePM could do with a lot of changes to allow it to assemble roles from pieces, e.g. in setups with unusual win conditions, alignment-flipped roles, and the like. At present, basically everything needs to be set to custom. I don't have time to change that right now, but if I end up having time to change it later, is it something that would be worth taking a look at?

It has a custom way of formatting them but if you mean take pieces of separate roles and add them together then an edit would be worth it I guess, a lot of work though.

Quick look shows that setups is nearly completed, just need to fix the browse bar template, and finalise a few of the categories. Roles was also close to being finished. I can complete those. The templates used for those sections are pretty versatile so they can be adapted to the other sections.

I think I was trying to get the wiki more organized into "domains" of sorts to make it significantly easier to organise everything. Any effort to do this and add new content/update content would be cool

Kison, if you're reading this thread and have spair time could you possibly write a quick thing for the wiki?

Specifically converting A-Z to 1-26 in the setups catgeories. Basically I wrote this ugly something that did this after adding a template to the categories in mention, but as it was hideously written it broke after the wiki updated a while back. All the setups are sorted by size in categories, A being 1 player, B 2, etc. 26 is variable player size.
