Board Games!

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

Woo, just beat ghost stories for the first time. (2 player, played 2 monks each). Satisfying! Nightmare mode looks...interesting.

Went to a board game store's halloween party and played a bunch of games!

Augustus
- my group loves it. So simple and fun. A little too quick though.

Hanabi
- Contrarily and surprisingly, my group hated it! The stress and tension of a cooperative game just doesn't seem great for them.

Kill Doctor Lucky
- Someone introduced to us, and it was actually super fun.

Smash Up
- Wow. This is much more complex than I thought it would be. Like most every card has a different action, and the bases do different things, and then these interact with other cards you lay down...it's like figuring out a story problem on every card lay, which I'm not sure I like. It's really fun to pick factions though when all the different expansions are available.

Played
Tokaido
. It's kind of serene, I guess, in theme. It's fairly light and easy to pick up. Was fun, but not something I'd play a super lot. I'd rank it low amongst the bauza games I've played (But I like some of his other games a lot), but I like it well enough.

Just played a whole bunch of new Gen Con/Essen games.
I'll rank them later, but for now
Secret Moon
(Love Letter II) is really fun.

TBM picked up suburbia, not sure what I think of it so far. What comes up feels kind of random at points. A little too hard to plan ahead effectively.

I only have one question for you: Does this game have guard cards? They always confused me, I think I need Kanye to help explain it to me.
Yes my Lord, but questions are dangerous, for they have answers.

Technically it has Guards, but they work nothing like the Guards from Love Letter. They're basically just VTs.
If you're looking for a game that plays a lot like Love Letter, the other Love Letter sequel (Lost Legacy) is more your style.
This is basically "What would happen if we turned Love Letter into a Mafia game where nobody could talk"

A little bit of experience generally changes that. Except for Airports, airports are weird. But generally:

- It's very rare for the $10 tiles to be worth it, so generally you can plan at getting a shot at them. The only reason to go for them is generally lock someone out of a strategy.

- The goals often guide what is going to be fought over. If most government buildings is a goal, then schools are going to be snapped up. Since schools are one of the few things that even comes close to making green viable in the base game, avoid green like the plague. Conversely, if least government buildings is out, it may be possible to go for a green+school thing (especially if you have a secret goal that supports that).

- Income early is good. Grabbing early income generators is your friend, even if they suck (gas station, etc.).

- Reputation early is bad, get it only if you're content to go for a low-money strategy. That being said, people will often undervalue it on later playthroughs. Watch for it.

- The game is more tactical than strategic. Only go for specific strategies like restaurants if you have goals that support them or can otherwise use the tiles for a plan B. That being said, restaurants are not awful from a pure income perspective, so if people are ignoring them, it becomes extremely cost effective to pick them up...

The entire tension of the game is that virtually every tile is effective at +$0, and virtually no tile is effective at +$10. So it's hard to evaluate the risk, but if you do it better than your opponents you will win.

I'm running
Blood of the Werewolf
in MM (http://forum.mafiascum.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=59746).
Never played it before, but it's like a cross between Mafia and Hanabi/other games where everyone else except you can see your role.

Playing Robinson Crusoe on VASSAL. Really cool, and there's a lot of rules (with a questionable rulebook) - but it's super hard, and super satisfying as a co-op.

Amazon is having a sale on Ravensburger items, mostly puzzles, but also a few highly-acclaimed games:

Reck (or anyone else who has it), what is dice masters like? It seems relatively cheap (yes, I know I'll need boosters) and looks neat.

I love it!

Haven't been able to play it much since I moved but it's quite fun. The meta right now (at least before the new expansion came out) was that people would play these janky combo decks and that was the only thing valid to play because it was so dominant... I think the new xpac fixed that a bit.

The dice are really just great to hold and play with and the game itself is simple enough to enjoy a casual game but complex enough to figure out highly tactical builds to optimize your team.

I'm down. Like to try playing with the Exodus destination or something, though.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

I'd be open to adding in Exodus, though I'll have to brush up on some of the rules.
