What are the alternative storage solutions? Just chests?

Chests, Jabba barrels/deep storage units for storing a lot of one type of item (cobble, dirt, sand, gravel, blackberries).

Umm...that's about it. You can try making an basic sorting system with EnderIO. That's pretty simple imo.

EnderIO item filters, especially the advanced and mod versions. I'm finding them to be fairly powerful, though it doesn't compete with wireless access to the ME network. Though I suppose the "Ender IO" capability that the mod is named for might handle that need.

Bonnie storage also a option. With some ender io to automatestorage, that might be a nice way to do storage
