I'm not very far into the game yet, but so far, all I've done is walk down corriders and hit attack when my gauge fills. So far, I haven't done anything that feels like the game actually cares whether I play it or not.One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.- Oman

The entire game is like that. The area that JDodge is talking about is just an area with (tons of) sidequests that appears right before endgame.
I've heard Lightning Returns is really solid, though.- esuriospiritus

I got that far in because I saw the potential the plot had and kept hoping it would actually reach that. But alas, I was hoping for Bioware-level characterization and got flat annoying people instead.
But yeah, if you can make it to endgame there are some actually challenging fights that are really fun. I wish the whole game had been at that level of difficulty.- hasdgfas

I have heard the opposite. That it is the worst one.jdodge1019: hasjghsalghsakljghs is from vermont

Well, I made it to about 2 hours in, it doesn't seem to be getting any better, and thanks to Vanille's voice, might actually be getting worse. I think I'm through with it. Follow up question: I've heard XIII-2 is better, but does it make sense to play it if I'm skipping XIII?One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. Not sure if you're joking or serious but nope, a good 85% of the game is corridors.
They're very pretty corridors, though.
I was going to say about 3/4ths of the game, but yeah, it's very linear. XIII-2 was more open strangely. Lightning returns was very different. I was lost about the story throughout the whole thing though.- Iecerint

has anyone tried Offworld Trading Company yet? It looks amazing... a scifi RTS game without combat. Or rather, where economic battle is the combat.green shirt thursdays- Oman

Let's face it, it's a FF story. Read a Wikipedia plot summary and accept that you won't be 100% invested. It's unfortunate that good oral sex excuses bad chemistry. - Korts- Untrod Tripod

I think some of the stories are pretty good. I mean, not for probably 15 years or so, but.- Oman

The game is done, gameplay-wise. The only thing being tuned right now is some aesthetics (most of them look fine anyway), balance changes, and ladders/queues.
They are basically releasing it early so they can get it to a better balanced state before launch.

Watch Day9 play through a bit of it, it does NOT look like an alpha game. I'm probably going to sink the $40 to get it.green shirt thursdays- Oman

Guys,Hand of Fateis amazingly fun. I totally recommend it. I've had so much fun in the last five hours with it, and I'm excited to get back to it. It's like 20% off on steam right now.
The gameplay is great: Batman Arkham style combat taking place in the spaces between a Tarot-esque deckbuilding card game between you and a...wizard? The devil maybe. It's fantastically thematic and a real blast, worth the price right now with the sale and all.

It DOES get better. I mean, it's a lot of corridors, but I genuinely think the plot is one of the better FF stories and largely gets the characterization right (except for Vanille, Vanille fucking sucks). The battle system becomes a lot more interesting around Chapter 6-7 I believe, when you are actually required to use strategy or get your ass handed to you. I have no idea why the game has such a ridiculously long tutorial but meh. Granted, it is entirely possible to use a COM/SEN/MED or some similar paradigm grouping to get through the game, but that's boring as fuck and doesn't work once you hit the lauded "huge open area"In post 1730, Sudo_Nym wrote:Well, I made it to about 2 hours in, it doesn't seem to be getting any better, and thanks to Vanille's voice, might actually be getting worse. If you care about story, don't play XIII-2. It throws a lot of what made the first game interesting out the window and sometimes feel like it's operating on a completely different continuity than the first game. It's a lot of wasted potential honestly. The gameplay is improved but the game is a lot easier; I very rarely lost fights, even more so than FFXIII and it was more bashing "auto" than the first one. The sidequests suck. It's way too easy to become overleveled.
Lightning Returns seems like the best game after playing a few hours, but I shelved for the time being to play Kingdom Hearts so I don't have the greatest grasp on what it's like in its entirety.- Andrius

So I bought Darkest Dungeon after finding its old Kickstarter page completely by accident. Watched about an hour of a lets play on youtube and was like 'okay this looks fun with a sanity system for added hilarity'.
It is both hilarious and brilliant design.
Also I just lost half my 'B Team' in a ill-planned boss battle. The 'A Team' was out of commission, having barely survived a similar venture.
I'm loving the game so far, as its a good rogue-like dungeon-crawler with the stress system for dismal deaths to CLUTCH STALWART VICTORIES. Minus burying half my backup team."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."- Untrod Tripod
