Pre-Black album Metallica is good solid thrash metal. They are much better than any of the bands CooLDoG listed except maybe Slayer.

Black album Metallica is very commercially cross-over metal.

Post-Black album stuff is horrible, unlistenable stuff.

Yeah. You sound like a pretentious fuck. Listen..

I listened to Metallica until Load came out, which was I think my sophomore year in high school. When Load came out, I was in denial for a while. Like, I tried to like it because I really didn't want my musical tastes to be defined by everyone who hated it. And I youthfully thought that if I went against the grain, then I was making an independent decision. Besides, all the crusty old hardcore metal heads always said that the Black Album sucked and I thought it was pretty good. But Load... Load just sucked and eventually I had to realize it, shelve it and move on to new music. And that's always a real turning point in life. When your favorite band goes in a new direction, it's like breaking and losing touch with an old friend. Reload was sad. I couldn't make it through half of St. Anger before that shitty metal drum chased me away and I knew I made the decision to stop listening. I didn't bother listening to anything else besides Garage Inc. And Garage Inc was like that old friend trying to hang out, but no. By then I'd moved on.

I can't image what it's like for young people to approach Metallica's entire catalog these days. I have some old nostalgia Metallica tracks deep in iTunes that might come up on shuffle. And even then I'll skip them if I'm not in the mood. Power-power-power chords is a frenzy of energy that is probably best enjoyed by the very youthful or if you want to remember youthful days. And that's how to say what you said without risking sounding like a pretentious fuck.

Really? Well... crud.

I guess the real main idea is that it seems somewhat rude to tell people that they are listening to music wrong. I mean, I don't listen to Metallica anymore for my own reasons and I couldn't possibly understand why anyone else would listen to them, but okay.

I kinda agree with panzer that Megadeth is pretty horrible. Even when I listened to 80s/90s hard rock/metal acts, there never was a Megadeth album or song that I could honestly say that I enjoyed.

But I disagree with panzer that "rock" is dead. I mean, I understand that music constantly evolves, but "classic rock" isn't just some transitional phase. What about that garage rock revival of the early 2000s? The White Stripes, The Hives, The Strokes, The Black Keys, Jet, Wolf Parade, etc?

I always loved their cover of "Sinnerman", but it just may be that I love the original Nina Simone version too.
