Mini 515 - The Pine Barrens - Game Over!

The Pine Barrens is an isolated and heavily forested area of Southern New Jersey, a sharp contrast to the hustle and highways that many of us are familiar with. Nothing will grow in the soil and fires are frequent making this one of the eeriest landscapes on the East Coast. The Jersey Devil, part-demon and part-animal is said to haunt these parts, but perhaps that's just a rumor.

Our grisly scene begins with the death of one of your own. The entire town, which was once thirteen citizens, is now down to a meager twelve.

Someone says, "Maybe it was the Jersey Devil!"

Someone Else says, "There's no such thing. Besides, The Jersey Devil is too thematic for a Mini Normal."

"What?"

"Never mind."

This might be an isolated town, but this is still New Jersey. It seems that some of your own have turned against you, making this the latest battleground in the continuing war between the Mafia and the citizenry.

You all sit down to calmly discuss the situation. After a while, though, that gets boring. Someone says, "Why don't we just lynch people until the problem stops?"

Someone Else says, "That's a great idea!"

And so it begins.

Day, Night, Twilight and Daybreak

* During the Day phase, players will discuss and vote until a player has been lynched. You can vote for there to be No-Lynch, but this also requires a majority of votes.
* Once the vote required to reach a majority has been cast, that person is dead. Unvoting will not undo the lynch, and the game will enter the Twilight phase.
* During the Twilight phase, players are still allowed to discuss, but votes will be ignored. The Twilight phase has an indeterminate length of time, as it is simply the length of time between the actual lynching vote, and the death scene/thread lock. The game then proceeds to the Night phase.
* During the Night phase, any players who have powers which can be used at night can use their powers. This includes, but is not limited to, Mafia sending in their kill. The night phase has a deadline for actions, normally of around 3 real-life days. If you do not wish to make a choice, please send in "No Choice". If the deadline passes, and players who have a choice have not sent in a choice, all players who have not sent in a choice including those who do not have a choice, will be Nightprodded. Players will have 2 days to respond, and will be replaced if they do not, regardless of alignment.
* Daybreak follows Night, and is simply the period between the Nightchoice deadline and the thread being opened for Day to begin. Nightprods are sent during this time, and any choices sent during this time will be ignored.

Inactivity, Prods and Deadlines

* Lurking is not allowed as a strategy in this game, as it is highly likely to slow the game down to a halt. Any player who becomes inactive will be prodded after one week, and will be replaced if there are no posts after two weeks of inactivity.
* If the thread activity falls too low, a deadline will be set.

Our scene opens with a carnivorous plant, rare in most of New Jersey but common in the Pine Barrens, slowly strangling a small spider to death. The camera pans out to the village. A circle of villagers surround ryan, shouting accusatory and threatening statements. Frustrated and disheveled, he looks as though he has gotten little sleep and cries out to the heavens, “Strike me down to show my innocence!”

Sure enough, a bolt of lightning flies from the sky, despite the lack of thunderclouds or rain, sizzling ryan to a crisp.

Someone says, “Wasn’t that a tad bit melodramatic?”

The villagers quickly rummage through ryan’s charred remains, looking for loose change and perhaps some gum. The gum is a gooey mess, but the villagers do find a driver’s license, blackened. Most of it is illegible, but some words can still be made out.

Someone says, “He’s from Iowa! Isn’t that where Mafia is from?”

Someone else says, “Not really.”

“Damn.”

Someone says, "Wait. If we can discern the identity of the Mafia by what's in people's pockets, why don't we just have everyone empty out their pockets?"

But the crowd is very sleepy with all of the day's excitement. A little nap wouldn't hurt, would it?

Due to the modkill, we will have the game proceed to night. Please have night choices in by Tuesday at 8pm. If all night choices come in earlier than that, then we may start Day 2 early.

Morning. The town wakes up after restless nightmares, worried what the next day might bring. Meanwhile, the Mafia was dreaming of sugarplums.

The worries of the town continue when you find that your village has shrunk to ten members. In the middle of the town square, you find a DVD.

You all go to Someone’s house to put on the DVD. It wakes up with the screaming face of one of your own, with shadowy figures hovering above him. The camera is a fascinating tale of downfall. We never quite see the faces of the Mafia, but the victim is shown being abducted, tied up, and transported to the Delaware Water Gap.

Someone says, “This is beautifully shot. The Mafia has the best filmmakers.”

Someone Else says, “I especially like the lyrical scenes where the Mafia mixes the cement shoes. And the beatings in slow motion. That was a nice touch.”

Someone says, “And how did they get those underwater shots of him drowning?”

Someone Else immediately goes on over to the computer to check the IMDb. Most of the film is uncredited, but flipping through the cast list, you find something interesting. The part of the victim is listed as: Spider Jerusalem . . . Townie.

Someone says, “Too bad he didn’t have his bowel disruptor.”

The stranger responds, “I don’t think that any of you are exercising logic. Also, the first paragraphs implies that I came by horse while the second seems to imply I am driving a car. How can I live in a world where the flavor text doesn’t make sense?”

The stranger says, “If it’s death you want, then death you shall have. I will sit in the electric chair and strap myself in. All you have to do is look at my pie charts.”

Someone Else says, “I hate pie charts.”

The stranger still insists, “But this town was founded by mathematicians!”

Someone says, “No, it wasn’t. It was founded by psychologists. Look it up. And I also hate pie charts.”

Morning again. Your fevered dreams of equations and mathematical functions means that you did not get much sleep. Each one of you finds a DVD in the mailbox.

This time the scene opens on a charter, hundreds of years old, of a society sworn to protect the town from all evil presences. Could it have been corrupted somehow and turned against the town?

Your initial thoughts are soon proven wrong.

Figures burst into the room, their identities hidden as the camera pans to the inhabitants. Two people, their faces a blur, sit at a table dressed in cool red robes with gold trim and fezzes.

You’re distracted from the impending doom as you think, “Man, these secret societies sure know how to dress. I wonder if they are accepting applications for membership.”

One of the robed figures quickly runs out the back door, but the other works furiously to save his baby turtles from the rain of bullets.

You breathe a sigh. All the baby turtles are still alive! The robed figure, however, is a messy pulp of blood and carnage.

Another body appeared this morning. Now, all of you stand if the living room of your fallen townsperson, staring at a stethoscope and surgical tools.

Someone says, “I had no idea he was the doctor. This would have been really useful information to have.”

Someone Else says, “We really should search everyone’s house. Seriously, guys, wouldn’t you agree that sacrificing a little privacy is worth it if it rids the town of a larger threat?”

Someone says, “I don’t agree with that. I also don’t think that our little fictionalized reality should be the forum for social commentary.”

After a robust debate, the town searches everyone’s house. The Mafia are easy to find. One of them has the complete Godfather trilogy in three different formats and the other has a really snazzy dark suit.

Someone lines the two Mafia against the wall, “There’s four of us and two of you. It’s over.”

The Mafia are about to give up when one townsperson speaks: “I have been hiding amongst you all this time. Little did you know there was a traitor in your midst. Mafia, if you will allow me to join you, we can end this charade.”

The Mafia shrugs, hands the townsperson a gun, and the rest of the town dies. So many bullets. Nowhere to run.

It is said that the Jersey Devil haunts these parts. Years from now, they will find only a stack of bodies where this town once was and assume that the Jersey Devil claimed several victims. Little do they know the true devils – the Mafia of the Pine Barrens, who will remain ubiquitous long after the name of this town is forgotten.

This town really couldn’t afford to get a real doctor. You don’t have all the required training, but you did go to medical school for one year before dropping out. You’re not really the greatest doctor, so you couldn’t save just anyone from a bullet. You would really have to study the person that you want to save, to make sure you do the operation right. And, if you can’t do the operation right, it’s not worth doing at all.

Just some notes:

Town, I wouldn't feel bad about your play. I thought the town did a decent job. It's just that the Mafia played EXTREMELY well here.

The town did not get much to help them against the Mafia, but there were dangers. Bookitty was the only person who knew the entire Mafia group. It was possible that the Mafia could have killed Bookitty and, if you caught hasdgfas and Elias_the_thief, Bookitty wouldn't be able to submit any kills.

I will have more comments later on, but congrats to the winners. Very well played. Hope the rest of you still had fun.

Oh.. and I also wanted to mention that I wanted to thank all the players for their dedication to this game. The site has been experiencing a high flake-out factor in the past month or so, and only needed one replacement is extremely unusual.

I think the reason that the Mafia did so well this game, is that, during Day 1 and 2, you guys were able to hang back and not get involved in the lynch. All three of you were involved in the mcpaltp lynch, though, so you jumped in when it counted.

One thing that was interesting, hasdgfas - you had a post where you discussed the possibility of every other player being scum. You forgot to put Elias on that list anywhere (presumably, because, in your mind, you didn't want to build a case on him or build a connection.) I didn't think anyone would pick up on that besides me, but that was a pretty huge slip.

I still think you could have recovered if someone did notice - just accuse Elias of lurking (which he was at that point) and use that as the reason you forgot about him.

Oh... and if you guys had killed Bookitty, I think you still would have won. Presumably, opie and ThAdmiral would have claimed to save themselves, but I think you could have gotten Boggzie lynched.

Thanks for the compliments on the modding. It's something I wanted to do to help out but I found I enjoyed it a lot more than I originally thought I would.

If anyone wants in my next game, I am towards the top of the Mini Theme queue.

In the next game I am modding, there's a huge twist in the setup. Players don't vote during the day. As the day ends, there's a "voting phase" where the players PM me their votes. Every player must vote for a person or for No Lynch. Then, all votes are revealed. A run-off vote is conducted if no player reaches a majority. Then, the game proceeds to night.

The flavor will be light (probably about the same as this game) - I'm thinking Prohibition-era Chicago as a setting.

It's a bit of an experiment, so I'm hoping to get some good players.
