When they roll out the high-bass songs, that's what it's all about. Bass so high it reverbates in your bones and allows you to forget the panicked thumping of your heart. Bass so high the ground itself dances to it, running around the dance floor, greeting everyone with a friendly slam. Everyone enters a collective trance, it's great.

I give the guy his pisco sour, that's all this one ever drinks, is pisco sours. After some time bartending I took it upon myself to not only spot the regulars, but build a profile for each of them. Maybe I'd have been better off doing crossword puzzles.

The playlist segues over to cumbia, pisco sour man gets up and leaves. Watching him exit I spot

Uh-oh.

Though the physical sensation is similar to the bass feeling, a frantic heartbeat is much more isolating.

The auditory fog immediately ceases, cleared up by fear-enhanced vision and hearing. My eyes capture every slight gesticulation, my ears invent their voices from a small glimpse of their lips. I know well enough why they're here. A cousin's husband's cumbia band, a very mediocre one. Mediocre enough that when the owner is asked to promote them a polite "no" is not enough. He really needs to be less flavorful with his words.

This whole time they've been wandering around the floor.

I glance at them with nonchalant swivels of my head. The absolute last thing I want is them making eye contact.

I've kept track of one of them. In the corner, by the three couches arbitrarily designated the VIP section, inhabited by the sort of people who are willing to spend extra for the unimpressive inequity.

This guy though, it seems he thinks there's something to the label.

They're kids, the VIPers, around my age probably. Wide-eyed open mouth shrugs are how they receive him, but he keeps inquiring, all leaning in on the seat, and they, probably elated that one of these has acknowledged their rented status, keep engaging him.

I focus on my drinks for a while, and when I glance back at them he's still there. Still leaning in. Them still stupified at the attention. Maybe it's the girls he's after.

Guy takes one of the posts and throws it at the wall. Shouts.

Coming in the next day, I was in a slight daze. I hadn't slept well and was still a bit worried about the previous night's events. It didn't seem like them to give up that easily after one night. They'd be back, and they'd keep coming back until they got what they wanted, which I'm pretty sure was my boss's life. The brutality was not something I dwelled on, I much preferred wiping down my glasses and sorting my spoons.

Sometimes though, there's things you just have to dwell on, for example, I noticed the guy who had thrown the gangster out yesterday was nowhere to be seen, I noticed other people on the staff noticing the same thing, and even as the club filled up and the music began to play, his absence filled the air with a creeping foreboding that I couldn't ignore.

"One of you is next" the atmosphere seemed to say, and I know I wasn't the only one who heard it.

Bartending with crutches didn't make me entirely useless but also not entirely useful. It had been a few days since my injury but the boss had called. Where was he I had asked. Are these guys going to kill you? How are we supposed to keep them out? His response was a series of rapid fire instructions. A clinging uneasiness. I'm so tired of it.

The high proportion of tourists tells an observant viewer that the locals know not to come here anymore. I wish I was so sane.

Paranoia grips me until my glass cracks. My face wipes away any smile that comes my way. The boss would be complaining about the lack of drinks being sold but you know, he would be shot in the temple as soon as he peeked his head out of whatever barrel he's hiding in.

To hell with it! I pour myself some vodka, spilling as I serve it and dampening my shirt as I lift the cup to my mouth. Repeat repeat. My face darkens.

Still those who come my way are put off by my aura.

Except this next guy. Very professional, no threats or insults, just straight to the gun to the face.

The frustration I've felt regarding these fuckers, my boss, this nightclub, serves like a fuel for the fire that's currently building up.

His gun is on the table, what a dumbass.

I grab a bottle and crash it on his head. There's a small second of meekness, and then, he's out.

I look up and see him aiming his weapon at me. He motions for me to get up.

A flash of pain hits me and almost makes me fall down again as the adrenaline shoots through me. Not daring to look around, I can only assume the club has been deserted. That is until I hear a small whimper from my side.

I only take a glimpse when he orders me to.

Two people stand there, their hands on their heads. He motions to the man.

The man holds the mafioso weakly right before slumping on the bathroom floor. He looks shaken, he was almost tackled.

A thought entered my head. It entered riding on a wave of dread, dread accumulated from all these past weeks that I've been living in fear at the expense of my boss's cowardice, at the expense of a gang's ruthlessness. It made my ears ring, an ironic echo of the music that had played. It made my face mirror the expression that had been on this guy's face just before he had charged at the gun. The wave crashed into me and sent me flying, practically unwillingly, towards the thug's shaking hand, still pointed at the leaking corpse.

"eehhhhaaaaaaah" I groaned, unable to collect enough strength to direct my arms as they erratically grabbed at him. They made contact with his wrists and I violently jerked upwards, right as he fired another shot. The bullet whizzing just over my head.

A yelp. The girl.

We struggle over the gun. My ringing terror-induced strength is the only thing that's keeping him from overpowering me. He shifts strategies, beginning to kick me instead of just trying to shake me off.

"Augh!"

His kicks cease, his grip loosens.
