BattleCON G10 - KingdomAces (Lixis) vs. Zorblag (Seth)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Sun Jul 10, 2016 8:01 pm

Post by Zorblag »

It's another game of BattleCON! Realizing that he's been playing with an unitended handicap, KingdomAces returns the Biomancer Lixis to the arena once more! This time he'll be matching up against the Oracle, Seth! Can Seth see anything in his future other than defeat at the hands of the Biomancer? He's being surprisingly closed lipped about it.

If you're interested in learning about or playing a game yourself at some point I'll point you to the BattleCON discussion thread in the Arcade. For now, thanks to KingdomAces for stepping up to be the next scummer to whale on a Troll in the pbf fighting series!

We'll be playing with Dodge and the Force Gauge.

@KingdomAces, go ahead and submit your discard 1, discard 2 and finisher. Remember that Discard 2 is the one you'll get back first.

Rolling for Ante
Lixis: 1
Seth: 2
Original Roll String: 1d2
1 2-Sided Dice: (2) = 2

And when I was trying to verify your discards I just accidentally looked at your beat 1 attack pair.

If you could go ahead and submit a new one (or the same one if you like but in a new spoiler so I don't know if it's the same,) that would be great.

So sorry about that!

I guess I'll push you back 2.

oLooooS

That isn't really the positioning I wanted out of this beat. I would have done this attack pair anyhow (and in the case of rooted burst I would have dodged past you with my start of beat. I don't really love that position either, but rooted was going to be a pain just like lance.)

And this game will be about leaving the next couple beats how we want them I think, yeah.

I think I hit for 3 and no one moves Sound right? And we'll see if I can stop the damage next turn. We'll see.

And now I need to deal with a baby here before I can do anything else so I'll have to get back to the game this evening.

He's worse in the 2 - 4 range it feels like, but at range 5 and 6 with your toolset there's a rotation of things he can do. It's not going to do damage of note, but it doesn't need to as Seth wins on thin margins I think.

I'll move you up one and back one I guess. No sense giving you that range 4 you want.

Switch your finisher or leave it?

Well, my original plan was to try to corner you and fight at melee, but the first round made that awkward so I went with this. I don't know that we'll get to finisher territory if we stay at this range. Regardless, finish switch it is!

Don't let me stop you from deciding to take some damage though. *grins*

I had a plan. It was going to be awesome even if it probably gave you the long term advantage. If you did use drive I was going to use the dodge start of beat first to advance 3ish (depending on everything you put out there,) and then switch it with Wyrding for Drive to close the rest of the gap and hit you for 5, leaving us at melee. Sadly we can only dream of being in melee.

Yeah, and I'm glad I found a good place to tell you about it before using that to be honest. I don't want to have my tactics be surprising (in the sense that you didn't even realize the cards could do that together.) Surprising in that you didn't think I'd make that move is fine.

I think that the nerf/buff depends on the characters. Being able to clash it out is pretty big in some cases, but there are characters (like Seth,) for whom it's a nice change.

That powering up of Pruning is one of the reasons that pulling that move was probably a bad one long term for me (as well as just having less bases.) Lixis is an interesting matchup for Seth (but I suspect she is for most characters.)

Still grading so no time to think through the next move yet.

Hmm, you could pulse at the end of that beat if you wanted to. I don't know if you want to, but it's an option that you might not have thought of as you were at 7 Force by the end of the beat.

If that either changes how you want to finish last beat or changes how you want to play this one feel free. If last beat doesn't change I'll go with this whether you change your attack pair or not. If you do want to pulse I'll have to reconsider.

Looks like you have priority. I'll not retreat as I do want to hit you this beat and I can't count on you stepping forward if I do.

You can advance 1 or stay in the corner. I'll then hit you for 3, aka 200% more damage than the previous top hit in this game!

I haven't decided whether I'm going to use pulse yet. I need to have some free time away from kids to look at options (and that's proving tough today.) I take it that you're not going to pulse as you have the first option.

That's fine. I have grading to do again anyhow so it's better if I don't spend all evening on it.

I think I will pulse so that we're adjacent (advance 3.)

That means that you should scrap your attack pair and choose a new one when you're ready.

I mix up shot and strike when I'm typing them and dash and drive for some reason. Or occasionally dash and dodge. Apparently if two words start with the same letter that's too complicated for me. Stupid letters.

Pass as well. Let's see what happens!

Burst Lance would be impressive if it were legal. Sort of? I mean it's 6 damage with some sort of range that would be good if coherent.

No worries and no hurry. I understand the dilemma and I've made a string of the wrong choices in a row in this game and the one with Cybele. You'll probably figure it out based on how I'm playing at this point, but I'm not in too big a hurry to get smacked around.

I will pass.

Marmelee's Alt UA looks much better than her standard one. Which is good as her standard one is really pretty under powered is the conventional wisdom. She needs to avoid stuns like Clive, but doesn't have nearly the toolset to do so. I've played in two duels with here. I beat her with Luc 20 to 0 against someone just learning the game (I tried to talk him into another character, but he wanted the challenge.) Then we switched characters and I squeaked out something like a 4 to 0 victory against Luc with her, but, again, it was that players second game ever. I doubt I would have been able to win again with her if we'd kept playing. And Luc isn't exactly a powerhouse (which was why I picked him.)

Yup. You hit me for 3. I'll discard drive. I don't quite start getting 2 force per beat, but I'm almost there.

So for this beat I'm pretty sure I haven't left the corner. Position would be

SLooooo

And Force caps at 10, though that's unlikely to play too much of a factor.

And past that it's been a long week, so I'm off to bed.

That wasn't as bad as the beat I feared it would be, (nor as good as the one I'd hoped for.) And I've at least got some more options for the next one. I'll have to sort through them later.

Still, advantage Lixis in a pretty big way I think. I can't win by doing 1 damage a beat from here on out and I need to connect in a bigger way than I've done any beat this game so far. Not to mention your ability to just kill me.

Interesting. I might actually have guessed a beat after a long spell of misses then.

Though Rooted Lance is such a nice attack pair there. Unless I can stun you it's just going to hit me and that soak makes any hit I do fairly paltry (though guessing lance helps.) A rooted drive in this case did me in, but it was vulnerable to the dodge so it wasn't the guaranteed move.

With the new position it might have been better to dodge away (though it turns out that probably would have failed as I think I would have anted beyond eyes strike with that to avoid the strike clash I was more worried about,) but I need to do some damage and time is slipping away.

In any case, no pressure these last 4 beats!

No, I meant in the position I thought we were in (me in the corner, you adjacent,) or I guess that you thought we were in. In our actual position dodge got more useful, yeah. But I'd spent enough time thinking and it was an offensive move that I needed to make to have a chance in the game overall.

Anyhow, I'll get to a move sometime tomorrow I think. Instead of sleeping I've been drinking, but that's not any better for making a move now.

Have a lovely evening!

That's almost a point with the spoilers, but with Naturalizing in the game I could see a position where I'd want to pass to prevent you from anteing priority (as Beyond Eyes doesn't help me past winning clashes in most of the cases that you use Naturalizing.) It turns out that last beat it did matter even with Naturalizing because the +2 Priority might have offset the -2 penalty from your last attack, but often Naturalizing makes my ante much less interesting.

Which I guess means I think you didn't go with Naturalizing? I probably won't assume that when picking my attack pair though. Because maybe you're cunning enough to make me try to go down that rabbit hole.

No, it wouldn't stop me from winning priority ties. I'm just thinking of a case when I might be pretty sure you were going to play it and I had something like a 4 priority to your 3. In that case I'd probably want to avoid your ability to ante so that I could still beat the attack. I wouldn't gain power with my ante due to naturalizing, but you could still win priority if you anted the force for it. It's not super likely to happen, but it's possible.

Spoiler: Beat 12 Attack Pair
Compelling Dodge!
I guess I am willing to waste a beat for positioning after all. I don't think you'll play Lance here.

Stalling is absolutely legit as a tactic here. Plus you've got access to pulse which might help you with that stall depending on when it's used.

I think I need to Advance 1 and then push you twice with my move.

Pesky Stun Guard 3. OK, let's see here. I will choose not to retreat. I'll advance 1 hit you for 3, not stunning you.

I don't think that it's actually possible for me to win this game at this point.

Yeah, I think that even if you'd done Rooted Lance with the soak there it gives me 3 damage, not enough to close the gap. Then you could dodge away next beat.

Anything else also beats me. Like the pruning Burst (or Venomous Grasp, or ...)

Good game! Well played!

So I do want a rematch, but I want to wait until tomorrow. That one didn't feel unwinnable, just really hard given my current Seth play.

Congratulations!

As for the last two wins by me, remember that you were effectively playing with the nerfed abilities. I wouldn't count them as losses given that.

Yeah, your range options were a bother and Lance was constantly a worry; I seldom had the same range of options that you did in a given beat. I also probably shouldn't have used that pulse, but rather should have made you come in to get me eventually. Had I gotten a few more Beyond Eyes in it might have gone differently (and at the end I needed to try to rush things which isn't in my favor at all for this matchup.) In any case, I'll see what I can manage for the next game or two (whichever is needed for the best of 3,) and then I'll probably switch out to another character for now.

No, if you're enjoying Lixis stick with her. I'm happy doing a best of 3 here, but then I want to try out lots of characters over time and don't mind switching at all. Besides, I at least don't have to learn a new opponent each time this way so there's that going for me. If you want to switch at any point you're welcome to, but do it for your enjoyment, not mine. I'm having fun!
