I'm willing to bet that the champion will have some sort of mechanic involving riding that dragon of his. My best guess is a rek'sai like "mount/dismount" or gnar like "summon drag" mechanic.

As far as I know it's similar to D.VA in Overwatch

ie. You ride around on it (Whether by default or not idk) and it takes damage first. The stats you buy transfer to the mount and it has a special set of abilities. Once it dies you get dismounted and you are just you again with a different ability set

(Note. This is just my undestanding from word of mouth so take it with a pinch of salt)
