RIP Scumchat
It's been about half a billion years since I joined this website. I came here after playing mafia on, of all places, Penny Arcade's forum. Initially, as I do in all places I join, I simply lurked, unsure of whether I wanted to make the plunge or not - reading games, GD threads, so on, before finally jumping in and joining a newbie game - and shortly afterwards, replacing into the disaster that was kingmaker mafia II. But while my initial enthusiasm for the game has waned, the friends I made playing the game have stuck with me, and many of you I now know in real life as well as internet buddies. The community is sometimes a bit screwy, but by and large you guys are awesome.
Which brings me to the point of my post, as hinted (not so subtly) in the title. You see, back in the day there was a little link underneath the general discussion forum that brought you to an exchange 5 AIM chatroom where the dedicated mafia players used to gather and chat. I came there and was immediately greeted with the lurid multicoloured fonts that people loved to use - and rapidly taught games like Contact, Ghost and so on. And of course, we played mafia there. Lots of mafia. Upick, mostly.
Time went by and the crowd there changed. It became populated by people who had started to lose interest in mafia, and while it was people from mafiascum, talk was as likely to be about Tengaged or League of legends as it was about mafia. It started to develop a negative reputation, and the games of mafia and contact or whatever dried up, but I still loved it and I still enjoyed the company of the regulars. Eventually the negative reputation led to the removal of the link from the website, and it became the duty of the regulars to advertise and try to keep the little scumchat community alive by pimping the link every once in a while, trying to get a few more people to stop the slow bleed of people moving on from spending hours in an old AOL Instant Messenger chatroom.
What's more, soon afterwards, the chatroom was added to the website proper, and the need to have somewhere to just talk with people, that had continued to sustain the chatroom in the dark days went away. Scumchat lacked purpose, and it showed in reduced numbers.
For the last year or so it's been clear that scumchat is dying. The regulars dried up to roughly me, Patrick, Mykonian and Izzy. For the last month or so I hadn't opened Pidgin to check if it was still running. Today I opened scumchat, and for practically the first time since I had joined the site, I found scumchat empty. Not even an account idling there, simply empty. Scumchat is dead.
This thread is simply something to mark the passing of a chatroom in which I spent many hours and which remained an important part of my life for the best part of a decade.

When I joined, scumchat had quite the negative reputation. And I thought it was deserved, still do. Coming from an area where MSN was common, I still more or less had to get AIM for the survivor games in mishmash, where quite a couple competitors also knew another from scumchat. So with that available, a dash of curiosity, I also took the dive into scumchat. I remember well, that for myself I went with the excuse that I'd hollow the troll posse out from the inside. Heh. I guess you can say I've seen it defeated.
The change from innate dislike of the people there, to become a regular, was a gradual one, and I've had my share of chuckles thinking about how it got this far. I saw the posse work, and was part of it anyway. Some parts of scumchat, will not be missed. Then again, I was well changed over the course of that time. I think scumchat saw me grow up in a way, from annoying teenager to where I'm now. I think at this point what I miss is the familiar contact with people I've liked, the old guard, they who've seen it all. Sitechat is great, but it doesn't have you people. I see you appear there sometimes as does TBM, Patrick I see on skype. Izzy won't like me for saying this, but I miss her.
And I was optimistic that we could perhaps make a list here of people we've lost throughout the years, as an in memoriam, but I fear I couldn't even get too far. It was a good run, we had some good times and it helped my world grow.Surrender, imagine and of course wear something nice.- Bella

I was MIA for almost a month because of minor nasal surgery turning into a pretty serious infection, and when I came back, the only person who was there was Stag, never talking.
RIP ScumChat, the mods finally killed it off.ShowChloroform girl, how have you been?

OMG Shanbananaba.
Since we're writing necrologues, let me add how much Scumchat defines me.
It was a safe place for me growing up, among an international group of outcasts like me. I know it wasn't a safe place for many others, of course - we were notorious for chasing people away and "organized" trolling of the site. But scumchat was the first community that made me feel like I belonged, and it's the reason I feel like I belong on this site. I would not have become invested in MafiaScum if it weren't for the people of scumchat. I would not have become a discussion mod if I didn't feel like scumchat had to be represented.
I shared my adolescence with amazing, snarky, offensive people. Shanba, CDB, Oman, Shea, JDodge, Bella, Ether, Buttons, scot, quag, I wish I remembered more. I miss shooting the shit, heckling newbies, stirring up site drama. I miss the spontaneous games and the long-forgotten injokes.
I wish I had some of the old chat logs, so I could relive those happy moments.

I know Scumchat has changed a lot over the years, but I don't think I can ever not give it a negative personal connotation, due to things I'm sure most people remember.
That said, I'm not going to harp on it, but say that it seems like there are multiple MS Skype groups, plus the one in site makes me feel like, in a way, scumchat has evolved and moved, so don't be sad!"Animorpherv1's posts are so powerful that prolonged exposure may cause vertigo, nausea, acute tinnitus, and in rare cases, death." - vonflare

Rest in peace, Scumchat. While I'm not sad it's gone, scumchat was an important part of mafiascum during my first tenure here and I do think the site would be worse off had it not existed.Current Avatar: Dr. Contessa(OC, art by @pastelpuffin)- Porochaz

I was in there yesterday!
For me, it was the Lol talk that killed it. Any time any other conversation was happening the LoL people were on a break and took over the chat. It made it impossible for those not interested in LoL to have space to hang out. I thought it was a phase, as scumchat frequently went through but alas it wasn't meant to be. There are great memories from there - mostly Cayke saying stupid shit - and I'm sad that I don't get to hang out with the people in our clique more now.
I'll write a more positive memory filled post soon but I don't think Scumchat is dead yet.Mostly retired. Unless you ask or it's something interesting.- Porochaz

I'm not sure I'd have stayed around so long if it weren't for all the awesome scumchat peeps.
I always enjoyed whatever games happened there and it was just uh.... great.
