A few weeks ago I was having problems connecting to the modded server: I would get time-out'ed 4 out of every 5 times I tried to connect. For now I'm mostly playing single player at a world I found from 2012

Sorry yall! I've been seriously busy with class. I'm trying to make it possible for others to contribute - I know arch, dav, gabe, you guys have always been so great! - I just need to find some time to actually sit down and make that happen.

As a note, my summer class is over Aug 10th. So I do apologize that everything kind of ground to a halt - I hadn't expected the work load to be as much as it turned out to be. But I miss mc terribly and I do have plans to finalize the server.

This is usually a connectivity issue - internet or connection to the node. Our nodes are in Chicago (I believe) so if you are connecting from across the pond, you may have issues, especially if your home internet is slower to begin with.

I have been trying various 1.9.4 modpacks on the curse client to see if there are any mods to get / avoid. Figured it would not be productive to give you info before your class lightened up.

You probably should go for 1.10.2 already. Pretty much any 1.9.4 mod in active development has ported to 1.10.2.

We have progress. I've managed to put a pack on the Curse client. It isn't the SP6 modpack yet, but it does work.
The advantage of this method is that the mods get downloaded and installed by the client and the configs are updated when you choose the pack to make an instance.
It's also pretty easy to check mods for new versions and update a local copy of the pack for compatibility testing.
Most of the mods have updated since the beta server was started, and there are even some which have been newly updated to 1.9.4, brand new mods, and a few unofficial ports of oldies but goodies.

I'm now updating my test pack to match an upgraded version of ETL's list, and checking out the mods in the suggestion list for compatibility.

Yes, you're whitelisted. Right now it's a test world and we'll eventually need a clean one, but it would be a good idea to see if the pack works for you.

I checked this out. I'm going to download from CurseForge to take a look at the modlist, but if only the list of mods is included in the "pack" you're using on the Curse client (and if the client just uses this to download and organize those mods) are you using or expecting to use the default configs or will custom configs still have to be released from the blogspot (which, by the way, needs updating)?

Custom configs are downloaded via the Curse client and inserted into the instance if you run it that way. The client looks like it uses a list of mods and downloads them from their own projects.
We'll also need to make the full pack available the old way. That would need to contain both the mods and configs.

To clarify: if Old Way works, and you need it as a back-up anyway, why use Curse? If Curse works for everything, why worry about Old Way? You're doubling the amount of work you'll potentially need to put into troubleshooting if you utilize multiple distribution methods each with their own quirks. Just seems silly to me.

What was the impetus for moving to Curse?

Because apparently curse don't work the way they thought it would work-study won't work for people who wanna use multimc and not the curse launcher

The method of updating on curse is easy. Duplicate instance, go mod shopping, playtest on ssp, publish. The old way the shopping, download, and publish are all separate and manual tasks. But that's just my opinion, I only offered to try to do it this way because it was something new to do that

be helpful. (I didn't even know Curse / CurseForge were useful in this way until someone mentioned finding mods there...)

BTW do y'all like the idea of using the curse client? I don't know if ETL wants to factor that in but it can't hurt to ask.

SoL is client side only so get rid of it. it's there to show food/saturation values.

curse client is fine I guess. I don't have much experience with it. but it would be more user friendly for non-modded-experienced players who don't want to learn how to fiddle with mmc.

as far as I can tell, there's really no issue with using curse as a mode of delivery. we just have to figure out all the quirks.
