well, they're published by the same people, but not the same designer
Memoir 44 is pretty great for a 1v1 tactics game. It's not super strategic or politicky (which are the things I like in my war games) but it's about as perfect as a purely tactical (but admittedly light) game can get
Does anybody have any suggestions for a board/card game for about 3-6 players? Looking for playtime of less than an hour. We've been playing BANG! a lot recently, and I'm looking for something new. I'm probably going to purchase Small World at some point, fyi.
Routine day with a dirt cheap brush
Then a week goes by and it goes untouched
Then two, then three, then a month
Then the rest of your life, you beat yourself up
Boardgame night was last night again and this time we played...in order during the night.

Snake Oil (Tied for first with comeback pitches. Excuse Armor for Superhero was the best I made)
Codenames (again)
Spyfall (again)
Disc Duelers/Coup (I played Disc Duelers myself, came second AHHH)
Quarriors! (...This game...I swear...)
Hanabi (20 points, good for the other people who played for the first time)
And I really wanted to play Tentacle Bento but we didn't have time...

Call me Lily instead. Avatar is Bellossom from Pokemon! drawn by Ether.
Espeonage (08:39) - lily is happy = everything is good with the world

Cosmic Encounter (that's pushing right up to an hour but great game), Machi Koro (3-5), Sushi Go, Wombat Rescue (3-5), Tokaido, 7 Wonders, Shadow Hunters (5-6)
I've been using a setup variation that you shuffle all of the cards together and draw until you have ten piles of unique cards as the buy pool (duplicates are put in a pile together). every time a pile is exhausted you draw until you have a card that isn't in the pool. it really improved the game for me.
I ended up buying Small World and Axis and Allies (longer play time but it was cheap on Amazon). Unfortunately my roommates have an exam this week so probably won't be able to play for a few days.
Played Small World last night with 5 people. Easily the most fun I've had in awhile. It took just over two hours, so way longer than we thought. I expect it'll be shorter as we get more familiar with the rules.
Which is why removing interaction from it is such a serious blow to it in my opinion. I feel like Race is about as uninteractive as you can get and still call it a multiplayer game with a straight face.
i mean, most of them? Agricola, Kingsburg, Five Tribes, Suburbia, Splendor
they all have *light* interaction but not direct player interaction. they're about on equal footing with RFTG's "try to bid on phases based on what other players will likely do/need"
I mean technically Agricola is "indirect" conflict but it's cutthroat as hell. If your Agricola games feel like solitaire that just means your player group lacks resolve and will not survive the winter
"Don’t buy a dozen eggs if you just want a hardboiled egg. Don’t buy a head of lettuce if you just want a salad. Don’t buy eggs and lettuce if you want egg salad because those are not the right ingredients." -Julius Bloop
I could see that argument for Agricola. But I still think the interaction is pretty minor and comparable to strategically selecting phases in RFTG to stop your opponents from getting the phases they need to have their engine go off.
