The Rules - they are long, but please read them!

The Basics

1)

Do not talk about other ongoing games.

2)

Do not quote/screenshot any communication you have with us, the moderator of the game. You may paraphrase things (such as cards you have, abilities and results) but direct quoting is not allowed.

3)

Do not use small/invisible text, steganography or advanced forms of coding/cryptography.

4)

Do not use any form of "trust tell" or let external influences into the game.

5)

Votes should be bolded or in vote tags, like so; VOTE: Quipla

6)

A lynch will occur when a player achieves 50% +1 of the votes.

7)

The town may opt to 'no lynch' in lieu of lynching a player on any day. VOTE: No Lynch is the format for this. No lynching requires only 50% of the town's votes to go through, as opposed to a majority.

8)

Do not try to exploit any loopholes there may be in this rule-set. We reserve the right to add, remove or modify existing rules at any time.

Activity & Deadlines

1)

Day 1 deadline is set for 12 days, while every Day phase thereafter is set for 9 days.

2)

Nights will have a 48 hour deadline.

3)

Prods will be issued after 48 hours in a row without posting or under request from players. Multiple prods will probably lead to your replacement.

4)

In the event of a deadline ending without a player gaining a majority of votes, there will be no lynch.

5)

In the event of replacements or any other disturbances, we may grant a deadline extension. Laziness isn't an excuse though.

>

Game Mechanics

1)

This setup has 5 Mafia and 18 Townies.

2)

There are

two

identical 52-card decks of playing cards (104 cards total), each with a Suit and Rank power (208 powers total).

3)

There will be a pre-game draft to determine which cards each player get. Any card can be claimed by either alignment.

4)

Each card has a rank power and a suit power. Rank powers are typically active abilities (though not exclusively), and suit powers are typically modifiers and passive abilities (though not exclusively).

5)

At the start of each phase (Day and Night), the top card of the deck is revealed and becomes the "trump card" for that phase.

6)

Only powers that match either the rank or suit of the "trump card" will be active for this phase. For example; if the seven of spades is trumps for D1, only sevens and spades will be active powers on D1. Then, at the start of N1 the next card will be flipped and that card will be trumps for N1.

7)

Some abilities are Day only, but for the most part, the majority of potential abilities can be active during the Day or Night.

8)

Day phases will operate as modified Deep South with active abilities resolving in order of the time they are submitted.

9)

However, to prevent the start of Day phases from being a race to the trigger, Day's will have a 48-hour Morning period where any action submitted during this time will resolve simultaneously at the 48 hour mark of the day. From then on, actions submitted will resolve per timestamp.

10)

All actions are submitted privately to the mod.

11)

A player can use only one active ability per phase, though they may have multiple passive abilities in play and these will all automatically be active. However, duplicate passive abilities, like say, two Beloved/Vengeful/Bulletproof modifiers

will not

be stackable.

12)

Cop/Card Cop investigations, Fruit Vending, Neighbourising, Deck Alterations and Kill attempts will resolve immediately during the Day, while Blocking powers, Protection powers, Trackers and Watchers are considered Rest-Of-Day actions and will last for the rest of the Day as soon as they submitted. Trackers and Watchers will receive their results at the end of the Day.

13)

If a day-kill (or day-kills) occur, and the voting threshold is due to be lowered, it will not be lowered until 24 hours after the kill(s) have been resolved inthread.

14)

Player's cards will go in the discard pile upon death, as will expired trump cards.

15)

Night phases will operate as usual, using Natural Action Resolution (as will the Morning phase).

16)

Mafia have daytalk, and a factional kill that can be used once per Day/Night cycle, ie; scum can use their kill on D1 OR N1, and then again on D2 OR N2.

17)

If Natural Action Resolution fails to resolve actions which modify each other, the action committed by the player who is higher in the draft order resolves first.

>

The Draft

1)

Once signups have been completed, every player in the game will send the moderator a whole number of at least 1.

2)

The lowest unique number submitted will be first in the draft, followed by the second lowest unique number and so on until all the unique numbers have been ordered. Then, the lowest number submitted twice will be next, followed by the next lowest double-ups etc. This continues for triple-ups and quadruple-ups and so on until the order is complete.

3)

Players who submit the same number as another player will have a diceroll to determine who gets placed higher.

4)

Once the draft order is set, it will be publicly revealed and every player will now simultaneously bid for

three

cards that they want.

5)

The first player will get their requests resolved first, and then the second player and so on.

6)

Remember, there are TWO of each card, and once a card has been selected twice, any later bids on that card will fail.

7)

It is possible that a player could receive no cards if they only bid on expired cards.

All club powers are now active. As are all Queen powers. Passive powers will automatically be active, while any active action must be sent in privately to the mod.

The first 48 hours of the Day phase is considered Morning and all actions submitted during this period will resolve simultaneously at the 48 hour mark of the Day. Thereafter, actions will resolve by timestamp. Good luck everybody!

Rephrase for ease of mod. Assuming two King of Diamonds are alive and a diamond is trump, how many lynches does town get?

It will still just be a second lynch regardless if there is one or two King of Diamonds alive. If there are any alive, and diamonds becomes trumps during the Day, it will be announced at the start of the Day that there will be two lynches (with both flips coming at the end of the day).

RULE CLARIFICATION

It has come to our attention that an important rule present in a previous version of the ruleset was omitted in the present version. It states that if Natural Action Resolution fails to resolve actions which modify each other (e.g. if a Jailkeeper and Roleblocker target each other), the action committed by the player who is higher in the draft order resolves first.

This rule has been added as rule 17) under 'Game Mechanics'. Apologies for any confusion.

Voting for a lynch occurs in this thread as per usual. When a player is lynched, they will die and the vote count will reset and a new lynch continues (assuming a K of diamonds still exists in the game). Both flips will be revealed at the end of the Day.

Correct. Results won't occur until the 48 hour mark.

No, the effect will only be active if someone is alive with the card. So, if the holder of the K of diamonds is killed while two lynches are remaining, it will be reduced to a normal one lynch Day. If they are killed after one lynch has occurred, the Day will end immediately as there is nobody alive to enable the second lynch.

Speaking as Hoopla...

Firstly big thanks to Quilford for co-modding with me and bringing the setup to life with the sexy graphics and animations! Expect more projects from us in the future together!

Secondly, congrats to scum on a clinical win! Apart from Day 1, they were favourites for the entire game. A couple of questionable kills late in the game and town drawing good trump cards late in the game (Lights Out Lynching, Grey's Royalty Vig) gave them a brief opportunity of a comeback, but Vecna and drealmerz closed it out very professionally with gracious teamplay from the other members.

Vecna in particular I was very impressed with, and I think scum would have quite likely lost without him. drealmerz play in the endgame and the neighbourhoods was quite good, but I think his ego and confidence in his abilities and level of play is perhaps misplaced, particularly given the primary reason he was townread was based on him attempted to get the King of Diamonds - a card he mistakenly assessed pregame as a pro-scum card. I think if he didn't go for that card, he'd have come under pressure a lot more earlier in the game. Ultimately, mafia is a social game about having fun, and I hope he learns to be less abrasive with future scumpartners.

Titus, Fishy and giga were my top three town performers. Scum were particularly fortunate that Titus ended up getting vigged which allowed scum to escape the spotlight of her reads that a factional kill would have illuminated. Fishy and giga made some strong pro-town moves and were essentially unlynchable for the majority of the game. Fishy's wrong reads at the end of the game might sour his performance for some, but I think town wouldn't have even been that close without him.

Grey would have earned a vig shot on Night 8 if he survived the Day 7 lynch, which would have given him a 50/50 chance of shooting scum and really giving the town a good chance of winning. I think that missed opportunity and the Titus vig shot were the biggest momentum swings against the town during a game a big swings.

A big thanks to the rest of the players (and especially those who replaced in) in making this a fun and enjoyable game! Hopefully if/when we run a sequel sometime later in the year we see some repeat players!

About the setup:

Pregame scum (in particularly drealmerz) thought the setup was overwhelmingly town-sided, but despite a poor draft order and not picking the most synergistic picks they were still in control for most of the game. In previous Pick Your Power games 17:5 is the tried and tested ratio that seems to work pretty well for the format. We decided to add a townie for the possibility of accelerated LYLO's where scum can kill during the Day which seemed like adequate compensation.

In hindsight, I think the scumkill mechanic was a poor one and the biggest flaw in the setup - something that will be rectified in future versions. It was intended to give the scumteam more flexibility with their kill to use in either phase, but really it was just a glorified daykill and created possible inelegant MYLO/LYLO situations.

On the surface it looks like there's an overwhelming amount of power that veers into role madness territory, but when say, 7 out 8 Kings get selected by players (which would be a very high-powered phase with 7 active powers), there's only one King in the deck to possibly trigger such a high-powered phase. The most likely trump cards are from ranks and suits that the least amount of players selected. This line of logic didn't seem too present in the game - scum in particular made subpar selections in my opinion by picking four aces, and doubling up on a lot of numbers and not spreading out across more ranks. Gerry's selections of two Kings was also weird as a King coming up trump would only enable to use one of his King powers anyway.

In general, I was surprised by how many people didn't understand the mechanics, especially early in the game. Towards the end of the game, it seemed like most people got it and there was some high level play and use of mechanics from some players that I was very impressed with. Future iterations of this setup will likely benefit from repeat players having familiarity with this game and helping guide newer players of the setup.

The draft aspect is always a very fun aspect of the game for me. When I played PYP games, selecting a pick above 10 was a sure fire way to secure you a unique number and land in the top 25% of the draft (though rarely first), but now it seems like meta is shifting and many people realise this and gambling on a low pick might be profitable. We really had a crazy amount of double/triple ups on numbers above 10. I think the best play is picking something above 30 to ensure your number is unique or gambling on something 1-9.

About the powers specifically;

I think the first change I'd make (other than making the scumkill a standard NK) is reducing the deck rigging's influence, as there was clearly too much potential for looping strategies shutting out many other powers in the game. Pregame Vecna came up with a clever looping strategy involving card revives and deck rigging which would have been a very pro-scum combination should they draft all the cards they needed - perhaps if scum got better draft positions they'd have tried to go for it. Another reason why I opted for an extra townie in this game was because there were a lot of great scum combinations available amongst the cards; Stealth Vig/Card Cop, deck-rigging Governor's and other pro-scum cards for example.

Another change I'd make is the Fruit Vendor/Fruit Allergy combos, which made Fruit Vendor's pseudo-vigs to the right players, but for the most part, players simply avoided drafting the Fruit Allergy cards like the plague. To improve, the Fruit Allergy's would need to be paired with more attractive rank powers, or perhaps be scrapped for something else.

Overall, a lot of time and effort was put into minimising paradoxes, ensuring some symmetry and providing interesting/balanced blends of powers no matter what trump came up. I've learnt a bunch from running this setup, and although a game being close isn't necessarily a sign that a game is fair for both sides, it's pleasant that the game didn't end in a scumsweep or town curbstomping scum - something distinctly possible when running a setup like this. Perhaps in an alternate universe, the right combination of trumps materialise to create a big win either way, but on the whole I'm pleased that both sides had a good chance of winning in this iteration.

Unless you also want to make the argument that just one innocent from 6 Cops means that Cops are worse than Card Cops since they actually produced a guilty on scum.

giga was saved from suicide by a Doc and scum White Maged Maria from being venged, so they had some small success, but I agree the Doctor cards should be reconsidered/given better suit powers to entice draftees, as they were largely avoided and could have made a difference early when scum were picking off the obv-towns.

yeah, I think if kraska stayed in the game town would have got much closer. her slot probably never gets lynched and titus doesn't get vigged which puts more pressure on scum earlier in the game, and probably even another early scum lynch or two given how bus-happy scum seemed to be this game.

Totally agree that massclaim needs to be more disincentivised - a solitary Stealth Vig power is really the only power that currently dissuades it. I'd actually already scribbled down Thief as a good power inclusion for future games, along with Discarder (name a player/card, if they have it, discard it) or Deleter (name a card in the deck or player's hand/permanently delete it, ie; won't show up in the discard pile). Both should punish massclaim quite well and a Deleter has the bonus of creating uncertain information about the deck which can aid more creative fakeclaiming.

I've thought about Jokers too, but not really sure how one could be implemented in a balanced way. Your idea seems good, but I think the top draftee picks it every time and uses it for a Cop/Vig if town and a Vig if scum almost every time, which just makes the setup more swingy based on who wins top ranking.

I agree Deck Rigging is a fun power, if a bit complicated for those not really paying attention, but it needs to be tweaked if it returns. I'd probably only have it cover 1/4 of suits next time as opposed to 2/4 and maybe alter it so the rigger gets told the bottom 3 cards of the deck at the start of the phase and then picks which one to put on top, so it prevents looping with card reviving to the Rigger and has to make more interesting decisions based on what's available to rig.

Yep, I like Beloved as a scare-power for town, but it needs to be matched to a different power for this reason.

I feel like the using the same deck for drawing trumps from is better as it helps minimise the amount of power active at once by making low-demand suits/ranks more likely to appear. It also allows players when drafting to select cards from ranks that feature a few mediocre cards in the belief that those are less likely to be selected, increasing one's own card's chances to be activated. I think reducing power as much as possible needs to be attempted in some way (which is why a Disabler exists in each different suit) to minimise the very high levels of swing already present in such a setup.

Very hard to judge after this one game. I think number-wise, 18vs 5 is ok....but....A LOT of very strong tools were not utilized this game. Personally I think there are (way?) too many cop cards in this game, and if town had picked more cops + card cops I think this game becomes virtually unwinnable for scum if a few of them come as trumps early. Defences against cops are only in clubs and diamonds, and requires a heavy investment for scum. On the other hand, scum could have made some killer combinations with card cops + vigs to seriously up our killing potential, but even then itll become a race against the clock to eliminate all the cops in time I think and you have a lot more card-cop liabilities.

The Cop powers and which cards they occupied were the most thought out because they have the most potential to destroy a scumteam. You have to remember that all the Cops were placed on Spades/Hearts cards, meaning that if all the Cops were taken, there's only one suit for each rank that a Cop can get an untainted result, as the two Queen of Spades Cop cards for example can't get activated by any Queen of Spades since they're in player hands.

There were two separate Miller cards to fakeclaim on Diamonds investigations for scum, and a GF/Ascetic/Roleblocker also in Diamonds for scum to take. The clubs Cop disabler was an important card for scum defense, but even if scum didn't want to take that, they had other defensive options too, such as; 2/3 of Cop cards were on Jacks/Queens making them vulnerable to Royalty Vigs and the 10 Cop had a PGO/Roleblocker available in the same rank and a Jailkeeper in the Queen which can provide chances to evade being investigated.

There was also thought put into which cards were to be put on the same rank for Cops; the QH, JS, 10H were the three Cop activating cards untainted by Disablers/Millers/GF's etc. but were also some of the most attractive cards in the deck; Jailkeeper/Card Flip, Suit Veto/Alpha Deck Rig, Alpha Vig/Fruit Allergy. 4/6 of those cards got drafted, which meant there were only two pure Cop Investigation cards in the deck.

A selection criteria I didn't see scum considering this game (which I think would be a good one for future scumteams) would be to select the premium cards from ranks they're scared about (particularly if they have good suit powers), which has the twofold effect of collecting some good powers and also reducing the chances of the powers they're scared of activating.

Like I said earlier, I think predicting which cards will be in high demand and which will be ignored (and thus, which cards will have good odds of being activated) makes for a fun draft metagame and is one of the reasons why I like the deck comprising of the left over undrafted cards.

The card draw / card revive balance is a bit off. Card revive is a lot better in what it achieves since you can pick the card and person. But card revive has decent other skills (especially the 7-h) while all the card draw cards have have downsides, especially for town.

Agree re: Strongman and would probably only have it on 1/4 suits next time. I think the suit powers Card Draw comes with could be upgraded, because when you think about, you're likely only going to get one, maaaaaybe two uses of Card Draw at best, and if the card has a detrimental power on it, you might as well just draft a different card and pretend you drew it. I also like the idea of a Super Draw power (name a specific card in the deck, if it exists draw it to your hand).

In the first Pick Your Power game hosted by SpyreX, number selection happened before alignment and draft choices occurred before knowing your scumpartners, but in all subsequent PYP games, number choice and draft choice have happened after alignment/partner knowledge.

Personally, I think the coordination of picks allows for more interesting flavours of manipulation for creative scumteams and also enables another form of scumhunting for savvy townies -- there are a lot of inferences you can make about what scum may or may not have picked, especially when the town has a few flips under their belt. Even number analysis can be handy at times, for example; town should have concluded that it's quite unlikely TWIE is scum picking 12 after Uzi who also picked 12 flipped scum. Does town really think scum are willing to double up on such a high number and sabotage their draft position? Maybe some scumteams with very deceptive/forward planning players might, but most won't consider this longterm gambit.

And for scum, the looming presence of massclaim late in the game and to a lesser extent card cops means they can't just go out and pick every pro-scum power there is (without coming under heavy scrutiny/fakeclaiming a lot of cards), but instead have to draft

some

town-looking cards and strike a balance between making

some

pro-town looking moves while sneaking by as many pro-scum moves as possible without coming under fire for it.

I think too much interesting gameplay is lost if coordination of picks is to go.

Another big issue I found with the game was Day 1 generating over 90 pages, which I feel like directly led to replacements (Magna) and indirectly led to a couple other replacements by trapping some players in permanent catch-up mode. I'm not sure how to mechanically solve something like this, or if there's even anything that can be done about it, but it really does make the game almost unreadable for players replacing in (and makes it harder to find replacements in general). After the first couple of Days and once more information was in the game, it became a lot more readable and people were spamming less, but I'd really like to hear about what other mods have done to combat this issue.

Has anyone tried bankable deadlines? It feels like making deadlines short, ie; one week but you can bank any unused time to carry over to the next Day might encourage town to make accelerated decisions early in the game to build up more deadline time for future days, but it might be one of those things that works better in theory than in practice. D1 in this game still achieved a lynch in 4 and a half RL days, so this might not actually solve anything. Night start is the only other mechanic I can think of to accelerate the start of the game and get to phases where confirmed info exists sooner, but I'm not really a fan of Night starts tbh.

Any other ideas or is this just a playerbase thing that needs to be accepted these days?

I agree that Doctors/Trackers are kind of meh rank powers that will need their suit powers upgraded in order to draw attention from draftees. I think Jailkeepers are better than those two as they're more versatile (can block or save someone and can't be disabled), but both JK's and Doc's will also benefit from less Strongman powers existing in future games. I also think there's no shame in there being a handful of overwhelmingly average or even mediocre cards in the deck in order to add variety to Card Draw's range of outcomes. Mediocre cards also become attractive to players late in the draft on the basis that they know they're much likelier to exist than other cards -- for example, we saw the 8 of spades (Jailkeeper/Hated) get selected three times and that was probably one of the worst cards in the deck.

I thought about this in the original design, but then the game only experiences ~6-10 different trump cards (as opposed to ~12-20), meaning many powers will never be realised.
