I found a listing of 370 film genres that was accompanied by a challenge to watch one of each. So why not?

I going to update this every week and see how many of the categories I can knock out before I get bored and/or totally forget.

Anyone else can feel free to do this as well.

- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) - {Could go a couple of ways, but I'm going to choose

Frontier

because of how the movie covers the key event that helped transform it from a wild frontier town to a 'modern' city.}
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) - {This will be my

Comic-Book Action

check. Not a great one. But whatever.}
- The Italian Job (1969) - {Ooh, straight up

Heist

movie. Loved the patriotic pro-British overtones. Way better than the remake}
- Hannah and her Sisters (1980) - {Going to go with

Marital Drama

but it could easily qualify for many other categories. Family Drama might have been better, but it's not a genre.}
- Re-Animator (1985) - {I could go with a horror category, but instead I'm going to cross off

Mad Scientists

because absolutely yes it fits.}

Well, right now it's pretty easy. I'm just knocking some out because it's wide open and I'm watching movies anyways. It'll get harder as I get forced to track down some stuff for categories like "Ballet" (I've seen Black Swan already) or "Older Woman in Peril" (Nothing comes to mind right now).

"Meet-Cute" Screwball or Romantic Comedies

as it's just a very elaborate set of circumstances to bring a couple together. }
- Sullivan's Travels (1941) {Lots of critical high praise. A meta

Social-Class Comedy

film where a well-off director romanticizes poverty and wants to document it instead of making light comedies. They pull it off despite being a little preachy about it.}
- El Callejón de los Milagros [aka Midaq Alley] (1995) {Recommended by Zulfy.. it's basically a Mexican

where stories of incredibly dramatic lives overlap in a tiny street. Early Selma Hayek though.}
- Pooh's Heffalump Movie (2005) {It's cute. It's fine for my kids who enjoyed it. The voices sound off from what I remember as a kid, but that's to be expected.

and my library happened to have a showing of this. I feel it's good for what it is, but it's over-hyped in a general sense.
Flåklypa Grand Prix (1975) - This a Norwegian stop-motion classic

which inspired a lot of filmmakers.
Mind Game (2004) - Wow. Incredible movie on Netflix right now. An anime essentially about

Lovers on the Run Road Films

but it's much more than that and very unpredictable.
Ice Age (2002) - Watched it with my son Brodie. It's fairly boiler-plate

Yeah. The mafia parts were the best because it seemed like actual mafia arguments (though somewhat naive). Then there are 15 minute kinda dull death sequences. The order of death was pretty easy. (Oh, we know that character's story? Ok, bye.)

Those subtitles are really rough. I wish I know Russian.

Bronson (2006) - The aformentioned

movie. Tom Hardy does a great job as Bronson, but the budget was low and all the cool stuff is implied. A better story could be told.
Robot Monster (1953) - A regular on most "Worst Movie" lists. I watched the MST3K version of this silly

Alien Invasion

movie. The villain is a guy in a gorilla suit with a fishbowl for a head.
The Giver (2014) - A young adult

Sci-Fi Thriller

novel adaptation. Failed to impress. Stole a lot from Pleasantville with it's B&W to color gimmick.
Joheunnom nabbeunnom isanghannom {aka The Good The Bad The Weird} (2008) - Fucking awesome Korean remake of Leone's The Good The Bad The Ugly. This is full of great characters and awesome shootouts. Highly recommend this

Comedy Western

The Most Dangerous Game (1932) - The acting is pretty bad, but it's pretty classic

Survival

film as an insane Count hunts down people for sport. Odd fact: the villain was a black guy trying to pass as a legitimate white guy. One of the first instances of "whiteface".

where 50 people are inexplicably put in a room and made to kill each other. If you don't mind the inexplicable contrived setup, it's not bad.

with was in bad need of a good editor to cut unneeded and bloated scenes.
American Pie (1999) -

- The first half is really cringy stuff. The second half kinda holds up.
Dead in Tombstone (2013) - A ridiculous
Shoot-out
western. Like the Crow, but in Tombstone, AZ. Actually a great bad movie to watch with friends because the director is so bored he has to throw ten crazy angles and 5 slow-motion moments into every scene. Danny Trejo, Mickey Rourke, and Anthony Michael Hall ham it up.
Spotlight (2015) - Damn. Really good

An Affair to Remember (1957) - Romantic Drama - Overlong and Cary Grant looked way too old for the part, but really good overall.
Any Day Now (2012) - Gay and Lesbian - Alan Cummings did a great job. Too bad the movie doesn't really justify it.
The Wild One (1953) - Outlaw Biker Films - I feel let down. This was okay to good. Felt massively over-hyped for some reason.
The Magdalene Sisters (2002) - "Fallen" Women - Powerful. Good. Second really good anti-Catholic movie I've watched recently.
Catch-22 (1970) - War Comedies - Lots of good performances, but the sum isn't greater than the parts.

I blame the AFI. There's always that black & white shot of Brando on a bike as he is considered one the greatest actors of all time, but really I thought his performance was pretty flat. Maybe it's a generation gap problem.

I'm sure there are plenty of more fun biker movies out there.

Oh, and I just watched Revolver. I'm not sure if it was Uk or USA because it was the Swedish version. (dialogue set to english, but the interstitial quotes were in Swedish). I'm still kinda processing it and there's no direct category for it (plus I filled up Psychological Thriller). But I think it fulfills the generic category of "Crime Film" but maybe "Caper" is the better way to go since it's essentially

one giant metaphorical (soul?) caper

(if I understood it right).

Revolver (2005) - Caper Stories - Good, but a little try-hard. Like, the Rule 1 thing was repeated so many times like Guy Ritchie saying "Get it?" over and over and it's like "yeah, Guy. Just let me watch the movie I'll get it if the ending ties it together nicely."
Meatballs (1979) - Teen/Teen Sex Comedies - Surprisingly innocent/realistic movie. Like, the movie opens with the nerdy counselor ("Spaz") having a crush and talking about wanting to sleep with a hot female counselor. And by the end of the movie, they had held hands and spent some time together and it's considered a victory. Plus Bill Murray really steals the movie from a bunch of unknowns.
Song of the Sea (2014) - Fantasy Drama - Same director/writer as the Secret of Kells. It's not super great, but I really like the fact that old Celtic folklore is being kept alive.
Fritz the Cat (1972) - Social Problem Film, Social Commentaries - Oh, such gratuitous cartoon sex/nudity/drugs/violence. Still, it's right at the tail end of the 60s and is a really bitter and cynical movie. Interesting in it's commentary.
Salinui chueok (aka Memories of Murder) (2003) - Mystery - Really amazingly well-made film. Certain cultural/generational differences were weird (80's Korean cops basically just beat people up until they confessed). But the director had obviously done his homework in the mystery genre.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) - Swashbuckler - Entertainingly forgettable.
Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) - Buddy Cop - Holy shit this is a crazy nutball movie. Good for a bad movie night.
Starsky & Hutch (2004) - Action or Adventure Comedy - I never watched the show it's based on. Kinda meh by itself.
Bridesmaids (2011) - Women's Friendship - Just kinda didn't like the main character. Couldn't identify and ended up feeling like I wasn't the intended audience.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) - Blockbusters - Plot is a definite re-hash, but some punctuated moments of really good cinematography really made me smile.

Shaun the Sheep (2015) - Family Comedy - Fun. Great cheeky British gags and just the right amount of heart-warming. Whole family liked it.
Stake Land (2010) - Vampires - Interesting low budget road movie in a post-apocalyptic America with savage vampires.
Outlaws of Boulder Pass (1942) - B-Western - Action, acting, and plot were all pretty poor. But the version I watched was of an old warped film which gave the whole thing a psychedelic undertone which was pretty cool.
Dead Poets Society (1989) - Inspirational - It still holds up well.
The fact that they find Keating responsible for the death instead of their own inflexibility is spot-on.
Gothic (1986) - Gothic - Spot-on for the category. Really weird take on the infamous storytelling night that yielded Mary Shelley's Frankenstein book. Strap in for really weird imagery.

Really bad B-movie. Overuse of fog only highlighted the film's weak budget instead of hiding it.

- Touch of Evil (1958)
The 1998 re-cut. Oh man. This is the type of great movie you get when you give someone like Orson Welles the freedom to make a movie.

Populist

- Babe (1995)
Somewhat darker than I expected. Still, the ending is handled beautifully.

Supernatural Comedy

- The Frighteners (1996)
Not much to say. Weirdly for as charismatic as he is, all the Michael J. Fox stuff is largely forgettable. Lee Emery and Jake Busey steal the scene.

Teen Terror ("Teen Screams")

- Friday the 13th (2009)
Eh. As much as I hate remakes, the original Fridays are horribly dated and it's not a bad choice to remake. But Marcus Nispel is a horrible director who doesn't need to helm these things.

@kraska77 - thanks for the recommendations! Seven Samurai and Sans soleil I've seen before and probably won't revisit for this challenge. But the other movies look really interesting. I hadn't considered watching a Vietnamese movie about the Vietnam war, but that should be really interesting. And I've heard about Solaris a lot but never got around to watching it.

I think it's mainly just an issue with both the dialogue and the performances. Like after every line of dialogue there a beat pause before the next person delivers their line. Everything just feels unnatural. Like a notch below Twin Peaks stilted awkwardness but in the same wheelhouse. I guess it can be argued that

"Oh, it because they are in the game the whole time"

but there are more subtle ways of hinting that that wouldn't annoy me the whole movie.

She's scrambling, hitting obstacles, finally just flat running to make the save. And fails. Crushing disappointment and guilt because she was unable to prevent a death. Deep, impactful, well filmed stuff.

Then the movie goes "lol, no. he was a hypocrite. Okay bye movie over." And it just made me angry. Making an audience feel sympathy then tell you that the character doesn't deserve it is basically, well, trolling the audience. That's why it got such negative reviews.

But please don't ever hesitate to suggest anything. I don't watch TV commercials or trailers, so even major movies fly under my radar.

Heh. In that situation, I had watched it with my kids and then found a category that it fits into. I already regularly watch British comedies (like, say, Baron Munchhausen not too long ago), so I didn't feel like I'm depriving myself by crossing off that spot with Flushed Away.

- Good goofy adventure take on the classic Verne book. An aging Jackie Chan is still as funny and cool as ever.

- Charming new take on a well-tread story. I love how the ending pans out.

- Aw, man. Even though it's set a bit before my high school years, I knew that crowd well. Haunting and Ezra Miller is an incredible actor.

- Holy crap. Such a young, serious Leslie Neilsen as a straight-laced and kinda forgettable leading man. The sets are amazing and the effects are well done. Best '50s sci-fi I've seen.

- Prisoners (Denis Villeneuve-2013)
- This is beautiful cinematography. Just amazing visuals. I liked the story and was strongly gripped until the end in trademark Villeneuve fashion, but I don't think it would quite hold together under scrutiny of repeat viewings.

- I can't say I really enjoyed this. Just not a profound thing for me, but I can see vets loving it.

Comedy Musicals

- Pitch Perfect 2 (Elizabeth Banks-2015)
- My wife loves acapella and musicals but is consciously cut off from mainstream zeitgeist. So I keep movies like this franchise in a back pocket for when she's having a bad day and needs to be cheered up. And damn, she devoured this and the prequel. The second one isn't as good, but I goddamn love the whole David Cross segment so much.

Sci-Fi Comedies

- Back to the Future Part II (Robert Zemeckis-1989)
- First part of a Trump double header. I haven't seen this in over 15 years and it's an interesting revisit. I kinda wish there was more to it.

I don't think I watched an old HK John Woo movie since high school. It's so ridiculous. Just armies of people jumping out to get mowed down within seconds.

Chow Yun-Fat is such a weird guy though. Physically, he's not imposing. Hell, he doesn't really even have a chin. Generally he's too goofy to be an action hero. Really, it's all John Woo's direction.

POW Drama

- Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Nagisa Ôshima-1983)
- Holy crap. Amazing. David Bowie as a badass British soldier and the homoerotic undertones. Just a brilliant movie.

Epic Westerns

- The Magnificent Seven (Antoine Fuqua-2016)
- It's hard to remake a classic and it has some great performances, but a hell of a bunch of weaknesses too.

Space Westerns

- Outland (Peter Hyams-1981)
- This was pretty interesting. Sean Connery as a mining station marshal taking on corruption by himself to save the townfolks. Pretty good sci-fi. Surprised I never really heard of it.

James Bond Series

- Die Another Day (Lee Tamahori-2002)
- I've heard this is the worst Bond and wow, it's pretty bad. The CGI especially is just laughably bad.

Travel Documentary

- 180° South (Chris Malloy-2010)
- Eh, kinda standard travel stuff. Above average for sure. But I love that Modest Mouse & Ugly Casanova soundtrack.

Thanks for this (and the westerns). I'm trying to avoid re-watching anything I've seen in the past 10 years (or if I'm generally too familiar with it). So that rules out Bulworth, Copland, Do the Right Thing, and Warriors.

The Velvet Goldmine is a great idea for Film a clef though. It's been over a decade and I always meant to revisit it. Dolemite too maybe, but I've seen it already and I was thinking about diving deeper into the genre. I'll pencil in Unbearable and Entity though.

As for the westerns.. Butch Cassidy and Unforgiven are ones I've seen a bunch. But I'll check out the other two.

And mockumentary is there! It's under comedy. I watched Borat because I hadn't seen it since it was in theaters and I wanted to see if it held up. Some stuff did, but some stuff didn't.

- Oof. I put off watching this forever and now it doesn't live up to the hype. It's definitely a movie that got re-written on the fly to accommodate the big-name comedians that they reeled in.

British Empire

- Zulu (Cy Endfield-1964)
- Oh wow. This is so totally ironically British. If ever you feel like you don't understand Monty Python, watch something like this first. Just to witness so much unapologetic stuffiness that is so ripe for a comedic tear down. It's so rude of those Zulus to attack them just because they are politely trying to subjugate and convert them. Also... "and introducing Michael Caine"!! So British.

Literary Adaptation

- Beowulf (Robert Zemeckis-2007)
- I do not like this style of animation. It's so creepy and lifeless. It's just unnerving.

Erotic

- Shivers (David Cronnenberg-1975)
- Parasites turn people into sex zombies in a Montreal condo. Not really erotic at all, but I've been digging early David Cronnenberg stuff.

Suspense-Thrillers

- Unthinkable (Gregor Jordan-2010)
- Ugh. The situation is so contrived that I couldn't really get into the movie at all. Sure, go ahead and torture. They are just actors and it's just special effects. None of this is real.

- Hey Eddie Izzard was in this! Overall though, it's not as good as I'd hoped. I guess I'm just not into glam.

Revisionist

- The Hateful Eight (Quentin Tarantino-2015)
- Bit of mini-mafia. Seemed gorier than most other Tarantino stuff. Even the grindcore movie.

War-Spy

- The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (Martin Ritt-1965)
- Good, well-executed story. Love John Le Carre stuff done well.

Courtroom Drama

- A Few Good Men (Rob Reiner-1992)
- Damn, this is such an interesting cultural time capsule. Top notch cast, great writing, iconic moments.

- Never would expect this movie would launch a major franchise. Screenwriting is that really bad and cliche 90's style.

Man vs. Nature

- 127 Hours (Danny Boyle-2010)
- Great job by director Danny Boyle and James Franco. Such a simple plot manages not to drag at all.

Hood Films

- Menace II Society (Albert Hughes, Allen Hughes-1993)
- Always wanted to watch this, but I was a little disappointed. The movie is great, but the performances by the non-actors is a little stilted at times. You can tell the Hughes are destined for greater things.

Holiday Film

- A Christmas Story (Bob Clark-1983)
- I don't think I'd ever watched it from beginning to end. Charming movie from the director of Porky's.

Gunfighters

- The Quick and the Dead (Sam Raimi-1995)
- Wow. This is a mess. Sharon Stone and Leonardo DiCaprio look really out of place. I think this was supposed to be serious and gritty, but Sam Raimi just totally fails and it's just cripplingly goofy.

- The Abyss (James Cameron-1989)
- [Director's Cut] Amazingly it's the CGI that ages best. The plot itself is rather 1950s-ish in structure and message.

Man or Woman-In-Peril

- The Happening (M. Night Shyamalan-2008)
- Wow. One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Just.. astoundingly bad on so many levels.

Generation Gap

- Five Easy Pieces (Bob Rafelson-1970)
- Odd characters, quirky Americana, spirit of adventure... After watching this I feel like I've seen the template for every Wes Anderson movie. He just covers it with heavy layers of twee and cinematography.

Historical

- Solid war movie with amazing soundtrack, pacing, editing, and cinematography.

- Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (Gregory Plotkin-2015)
- I can't really fault them for continuing to make these dumb movies. They make 100 times their budget back in profit. They threw some computer graphics in this one so it's kinda neat sometimes. But it's still a lot of just bad parenting.

Historical

- Little Big Man (Arthur Penn-1970)
- I read someone describe it as "Forrest Gump of the Old West" and that's all I can think about. Interesting, but underwhelming.

Concert Films

- Monterey Pop (D. A. Pennebaker-1968)
- Good lineup. Classic moments. That Ravi Shankar track was pretty incredible. Nice 60s "roving camera" doc.

Political Comedies

- Wag the Dog (Barry Levinson-1997)
- De Niro and Hoffman really play well off of each other.

Odd Couple

- Lars and the Real Girl (Craig Gillespie-2007)
- Didn't really know what to expect going in and this floored me. An amazing told story of loneliness and therapy and kindness. Absolutely touching.

- Super maudlin. Streep and Kline are great, but it's not that great.

- Wasn't looking forward to the category and it let me down.

- Damn. How did I not see this movie already? Another De Palma psychic teenagers on a rampage movie. Packed with so much action that it doesn't really make much sense. Also, great ending.

Military Comedies

- Private Benjamin (Howard Zieff-1980)
- Surprisingly most of it holds up well. Goldie Hawn plays her role just right and there is a great support cast. Weak third act though.

Blaxploitation

- Foxy Brown (Jack Hill-1974)
- I love when Grieg and Haig meet-up. Just a couple of old friends who know they are about to kick ass again.

And that's it. Finished the challenge in 743 days. That said, after doing it I don't recommend it to others.

Genres would be a good challenge, but this list sucks. Some categories are ridiculously vague and others are specific to a type that is hard to know what movies fit it. For example, I'm still not really sure what the difference is between "classic Sci fi", "Atomic age", "50's sci-fi", and "Pulp sci-fi". Also, I wish there were more international categories. Where is stuff like "Italian neo-realism" or "French New wave"?

Still, I did get around to watching a lot of classic movies I've been meaning to watch. I'll probably do another challenge of some type soon.
