473. Ashe - Survivor: League of Legends

Ashe didn't quite seem to understand the game when she was in it. For some that might be cute, for others it might be painful. If you translate it into human behavior you might find on the real show, the corresponding image of someone trying to roleplay as a character in real life is not a great look. Her tantrum and subsequent quit were unpleasant to watch and on the whole, the game would have been improved if she hadn't showed up at all.

466. Purple Yam - Names Are Hard

I really don't think there's much to say about this person, since it seems the biggest effect they had on the game was sparing Flint for one vote and being boring.

459. Link - Hyrule

Image
"But Agitha you are such a wonderful princess"

Link's strategic presence didn't bring anything especially new or different to the game. Like many other generally low-on-the-totem-pole players in the game, he picked a tribe and then was voted out of it due to failure to make connections. However, what brings him from a neutral character to a negative one was his strange, creepy flirting with Agitha in public, which she was clearly not interested in, and related reasons for doing so. Obviously, the passing of a loved one is sad, but it is something that didn't really have a place where it was discussed. You don't really tell people you haven't even met about that sort of thing.

Overall, it was weird and uncomfortable.

446. Pichu - Seafoam Islands

Image -
"Well, I guess keeping Charmander around then kicking him out in the next TC would be pretty evil yet smart. After all, that bastard's planning to get plenty of allies in our tribe before the merge (of two tribes). Then again, I guess it's safe to play along. For now. Then again, Ledyba seems to be a cocky dude."

Charmander is stupid. Charmander is up to something. Eevee is an idiot. Charmander can't read. Well, okay, but Pichu is the one who got voted out, so I'm not sure what that says.

441. Two-Face - PrivateI/Narninian - Arkham City (21st place)

Image
"NOPE! I'm aligned with everyone equally!"

A hydra in this game was a really cool idea, and what a great time to do it. But unfortunately, the two of them put together were less active than one normal player, and they did not do anything interesting during their short time in the game or use their confessional very much. Ultimately, this cut is as much for the wasted opportunity to do anything cool as actual character quality -- there are most likely other options who added less to games they were in available, but none that could have shown how something unique and interesting could impact the game and totally failed to make anything of it.

435. Commissioner Gordon (mallowgeno) - Arkham Asylum

Image
"Why does no one PM me back? *sigh*"

This slot was incredibly blah and didn't really exist very much. He seems to have failed to connect with anyone due to low activity, it's not clear to me whether he really even had any allies. The handcuff twist paired him with early flame-out/possible overplayer Two-Face, and he didn't seem to even trust him when they were stuck together, for no clear reason, seemingly having difficulty trusting him even for the moment they were stuck together. Nullified the pair's vote on purpose during the tribal they went home in by a landslide. Clearly, he wasn't very aware of anything. His thread with Two-Face is largely composed of Two-Face strategizing with himself. And even his boot was not his own moment, as he was eliminated because the other players voted out Two-Face.

422. Sandshrew (T-Bone) - Seafoam Islands

Image
"Do I get my exit interview? Because that was dumb. I was winning challenges..."

The impression I get from this person's confessional is that they didn't quite get that there are multiple facets to this game. There's a smidge of complaining about the challenge, some votes for people for poor challenge performance, and being confused about his elimination when he was doing well in challenges. At least it's a coherent narrative.

409. Treebeard (Axxle) - Middle Earth

Image
" I'll have to make sure I don't shoot myself in the foot with making too many alliances."

On his early tribe, Treebeard mentions fondness for Galadriel and Gollum. Neither of whom appear to care about his existence in the least. So I don't think there was exactly a rock solid alliance going on here. Treebeard gave up a bunch of his votes due to a challenge, rendering him irrelevant in his swap tribe and not a very difficult boot. Contrary to his fears, it does not appear as though having too many alliances was a major problem for him. But his confessional is quite bare, so whatever else he was doing, it doesn't appear to have helped. Also, I did not know who played this slot until after I decided to cut it.

402. Mega Man (theamateur) - Destiny Islands

Image
"Why should Light be good, and Darkness be evil? There is no difference between good and evil, and the only thing that matters is Justice. True Justice belongs to the person who believes in himself the most."

Mega Man's confessional for the most part, like his gameplay, appears to be an exercise in the bare minimum required to be considered a player, with a side of unintentional comedy. He says that "the most useless person" will go home next and then promptly goes home. He seems to intentionally avoid giving good answers to mod questions. However, there is one little gem in here.

After all of this near-zero presence, he's confronted with a choice between Light and Dark to do with the game and goes on a philosophical ramble about the nature of light and darkness. It's totally unexpected from everything else he's been doing and pretty funny, actually. It reads as though he thinks the mod account just wants to have a conversation with him. Still, it's two beautiful posts from a slot that otherwise didn't need to bother with existing. Thanks for playing!

395. Link (NS) - Destiny Islands

Image
[interesting quote not found]

Second time's the charm.

I don't think there is anything particularly interesting happening in this slot. He calls multiple people assholes in his confessional without telling us what they did that was so terrible -- wow, that's really great and interesting! I can only assume Link is still in this rankdown because cutting a previous idol play right away seems a little rude. I know that's why I didn't do it already, at least.

388. Bullet Bill (KageLord) - Mushroom Kingdom

Image
"I'm surprised I have made it this far with definitely subpar play."

So are we. Anyway, Bill's secret group died off early, so we don't get to see any strategy from him in there, and his confessional is also terrible, and I didn't get a sense from reading through the game that he did anything or mattered despite somehow making it to 10th place.

374. Rum Raisin (Tatsuya Kaname) - Pretty Super Vanilla

Image
"Okay, being not much inactive to PMs cause me some troubles now. I just don't know, like Wasabi said to me, how to show my effort to other players..."

Rum Raisin is a story we have heard many times here on Mafiascum. He showed up, but he just wasn't communicating with his tribe on at all the level that he thought he was. He wasn't very aware of the game, and even being singled out as a Rotten Banana did not seem to help him realize that he was doing something wrong until after he was eliminated. Mint Chocolate Chip tried to make the artificial connection work but there just wasn't much of anything there for him to do anything with, the guy was barely active and only survived a few rounds due to lack of TCs.

Also, I don't know exactly why, but I found him really particularly excruciating to watch.

Nah. Dora may not have played a perfect game, but in most games she would have done well and she was quite possibly the only hero in a game that suffered from not having any. Moving against harmony would be a good play nine times out of ten, and I don't think it is fair at all to blame her for the ultimate outcome of the game. She was a fun presence, solid strategist at least during the premerge, and although she may have contributed to Jesse's victory by trying to form cross tribal bonds, the blame for season finale being terrible does not belong with her. And she certainly has no business going before Donna and several members of purple reign that chose to plod to their demises in a not particularly fun way (Glenn, Danny). If this was a test to see if I would ever play this, good job!

361. Cornelius (PrivateI) - Names Are Hard

Image
"I am weak in challenges, and my communication is spotty at best."

Sometimes, a player survives much longer in a game than they seem to have any right do survive, and this is unfortunately a very good example of why it's best that such things simply not happen. Cornelius was barely playing this game at all from the moment it started. He was targeted quite a few times for basically being inactive by players in the minority who thought he should be an easy boot, but it never seemed to stick. I truthfully cannot tell you what Cornelius was doing in this game, what he thought he was moving towards, or how he planned to get to the end and win, because his confessional contains pretty much no information about that beyond the first tribe. He seems to have just voted for whoever he was told to vote for until finally, no one wanted to use him as a goat anymore and he just kinda stopped being a thing.

My favorite thing about Gus was his inability to sense irony. I wrote a paragraph complaining to him passive-aggressively about one-line messages and how I wished people would be more talkative than that, and he sent back a one-liner agreeing with me. He was kind of like talking to a wall.

Not really. I didn't lose because I screwed up the execution, I lost because I figured that three hours was going to be enough for a relatively difficult endurance challenge. I hit the three hours that I wanted but it wasn't enough.
Going first probably didn't help!

354. Gothmog (Trevor) - Middle Earth

Image
"My strategy ever since the tribe swap was to operate around the blue voting bloc."

In that same vein, I believe it's time we cut our first finalist, and one of the few we've ever had that even in retrospect appear not to have had anything going on in the game at any point. Gothmog didn't use his confessional really at all, but even reading Final Tribal Council is enough to see that he does not appear to have considered at any point that the game ends in the jury voting for a winner.

Gothmog was just a number in an alliance that happened to not ever get voted out. He is criticized for a poor social game as well as a total lack of strategic game, and it's really not clear that he did much of anything right to get where he did except just happen to not be voted out and be in the right places at the right times. Upon seeing at the merge that his alliance was in the minority, he apparently chose to believe they would be picked off and not do anything to prevent this. He played "lock in and wait" while the other two finalists played Survivor, and paid the price in being generally humiliated by the jury.

347. Boo (Drench) - Mushroom Kingdom

Image
"Just checking in to say that I'm here."

That's about all Boo managed to do in this game. He made it to the jury and narrowly went home a few rounds later but it doesn't seem like he was really advocating for anything or doing anything other than expecting his secret group to help him. Both his confessional and secret group posts are pretty much limited to discussing safety and/or numbers. But the numbers guy was a number himself, evidently. Perhaps he had some game going on but it certainly does not seem to be written down anywhere. I don't even know why he went home other than it probably wasn't too hard to do.

Togepi was in the game of Sky Pillar. He probably had some friends. Maybe he didn't. You sure can't tell from his confessional. Then he quit. The end.

333. Red Hood (beastcharizard) - Conclave

Image
"People should learn not to piss off the guy with the gun."

Red Hood does have a fun little story, if a short one. He enters the game with a vendetta against Robin because their characters are enemies (sound familiar?) but fortunately this doesn't matter. He apparently managed to make a final two deal with Two-Face about as soon as the game started and didn't seem to think that this would ever change and that Two-Face was just randomly agreeing to serve him?

Anyway, he switches his loyalty to Queen Bee pretty quickly and is rewarded as the tribe keeps him over Black Manta and his instant alliance. Red Hood's confessional just reeks of arrogance in an obviously over the top way that is pretty funny, featuring such gems as "Well I originally didn't like Queen Bee for attempting to take my leadership role but I am now content to share it." and "Apparently Mantra is trying to form an alliance without me. Bad move considering I am pulling my weight and his during this challenge."

Anyway, he's the first voted out of Penumbra for not being social. Probably could have been a fun train wreck if he lasted longer.

"I was really surprised that Peach and Toadette weren't together. I wonder why Diddy told me otherwise? That is actually extremely beneficial. I plan to hold onto that little nugget of information for myself. This way, if targets get set on Peach, who is she going to turn to? If targets get set on Toadette, well, I'll just say that I couldn't save her."

Koopa is still in this rankdown because he technically posted in his confessional. It's pretty much all gamebot stuff.

319. Larvitar (???) - Seafoam Islands

Image
"I like my tribe a lot. I hope I'm not being backstabbed."

I wouldn't be surprised if someone took umbrage with this cut, but I think it's long overdue. Larvitar requested that his identity not be released for some reason after the game, and the mods complied, so we don't know who he was. That's kind of fun and has become somewhat of a meme, but it's really got nothing to do with his presence as a character in this game.

Within the game, he was there, and pretty much went home because he was deemed the less useful of two players in his tribe who weren't part of the majority alliance. I think we've already given him plenty of credit for that fun fact and at some point it becomes silly to cut relevant players over him.

312. Spyro (kdowns) - Destiny Islands

Image
"Asking me that question is hard as we all equally deserve to win as all three of us have made it to the end."

Spyro locked into an alliance on his starting tribe, and his game plan only really shifted later in terms of which members of that tribe were part of the alliance.

During the tribe swap, he was a constant target, kept in the game by Shadow maneuvering things to keep him alive because of his undying loyalty to Shadow. Starting at the merge, Spyro's game pretty much stops, and he appears to pretty much do whatever Shadow tells him to do for the rest of the game.

At the final four, he shows a glimmer of independent though as he considers turning on ally Zelda, whom he apparently barely speaks to, for being a threat. Then... Shadow tells him not to and that's the end of it.

At the Final Tribal Council, he essentially lays down and dies, even managing to lose Yoshi's vote despite coming in with it seemingly secure. At first he claims to have orchestrated most of the eliminations of the merge, then when pretty much everyone says "uh lol no you didn't do any of those things" he pretty much stops having an argument, and it's clear many of the jurors felt he had no social game either. All in all it looks like the game of the type of player on the show who seems to be under the impression that "we won survivor" is a legitimate thing to say because you win when you have the most friendship.

Even though Shadow was a worthy winner, this game seems like it would've been greatly improved if the yellow alliance had lost, or at least had to face some real obstacles, which is something I expect to address in another cut quite soon.

305/306. Shadowfax (T-Bone) - Middle Earth

Image
"I am really worried about being voted out, but if I say I'm safe to everyone people might believe it and not vote for me in fear of being in the minority."

Shadowfax seems to have been a decently middle of the road contestant who got into the majority alliance on his first tribe then got kind of a bad swap and was in trouble. To his credit, it seems he managed to cause some drama during his elimination by pretending to have votes that he in no way actually had. Unfortunately this is only poorly recorded.

He was perceived as controlling and the cause of the drama as a result of these actions, all moreso assuring his departure. Basically, a pretty average character and average without too many clear standout moments isn't good enough anymore.

298. Batgirl (notscience) - Arkham Asylum

Image
"It seems there's a web of people though, I wasn't aware of all these people voting Bane."

Batgirl was a newbie, so it seems only fair to give her some sort of pass for lacking awareness. But hers is a story we have seen before, and it begins with thinking social players like her when actually they're just social. She mentions early in the game that she thinks Lady Shiva, Huntress, and Ventriloquist are great. A quick confessional trip reveals that Lady Shiva does not think of her at all, Ventriloquist calls her a lurksack, and Huntress has this to say:
Spoiler:
Image

In essence, Batgirl's game could best be described as passive. Her only real ally is Catwoman, who was handcuffed to her, so that alliance pretty much makes itself. Her gameplan is pretty simple; she hears that Deadshot doesn't like her, so she starts talking in confessional about how uch she wants to kill Deadshot and how lame Deadshot is and etc. Such sweet OMGUS. This appears to be all the planning she can be bothered with, and it's not clear whether she was really trying to actually do very much to get rid of him. Batgirl and Catwoman basically get left out in the cold without many other solid connections, making Batgirl the second-fake-merge boot.

Basically, it seems there was a web of people, and Batgirl wasn't much of a spider whisperer.

292. Ace the Bat-Hound (Malakittens) - Arkham Asylum

Image
"During the Deadshot vote, everyone told Deadshot how much of a coward he was for trying to vote out a weak player like Ace. This round, everybody is saying that Ace is a huge threat and needs to go. Did I miss something?"
-- Poison Ivy

First of all, Ace's confessional is pretty awful, so it's hard to tell what he was actually doing from that, other than having to get voted out twice. According to someone with an actual confessional, it appears she was a bit more than just a pawn or the last to be pagonged, as she had allies in Ivy, Black Bat and Red Hood who would have been willing to save her at her TC. Instead, she picked the wrong target and gave up when it didn't work rather than trying the alternative like, if Ivy is to be believed, those allies were waiting for her to do.

Yyyyep.

I almost went that approach with Porunga.

Somehow I have a requirement of doing at least one chain that eventually gets to 10 plus paragraphs in every game I've played.
Although I'm not sure I actually got that far with Radiohead in BotB. I need to check if my theory holds true with that reexamination. I may also have not quite made it to that level with white rabbit either actually. But you get the general idea. I'm not happy unless I have at least one wall.
If that wasn't 10 paragraphs then it'd only because we didn't use paragraph breaks for some reason.

I feel like we're kind of over rating the likelihood of a player winning who left before the merge. We are not prophets.

I was going to write an essay about why I hate Yoshi as a character so much when I cut him, but I guess I don't have to now.

What it boils down to is that in addition to, as you said, messing up the game and providing the ultimately dominant alliance a very easy path to the end (eliminating the seemingly more interesting alliance in the process), he's also just super self-important and annoying

286. Black Manta (pickemgenius) - Conclave

Image
"My four is set.

whether they like easy comfort or not isnt my problem anymore.

time to sit back til they fucking boot me boys. "

Black Manta posted some gifs about his tribemates, made an alliance of four on his six person tribe, sat on it, then had a busy day during Tribal and went home kinda for overplaying, allying with people before they actually felt trust, and leaving out then-big-player Queen Bee and her favorite goat in Red Hood; and kinda for not being around to do anything to stop that from happening. *shrug*

279. Gobias (DoctorPepper) - Greece

Image
"And I know there cant be a fucking power struggle here, because I WILL NOT SURVIVE WHEN THIS ALLIANCE BECOMES OUTNUMBERED."

Gobias pretty much floated through the pre-merge, liking the people everyone else liked and not being a particularly relevant force. He apparently seems to wake up around merge time and realize that he is very expendable. He decides he wants to collect the swing votes and try to take out some big players! Wow, exciting! Unfortunately, instead of doing that, he instead decides to try to pagong Cergio for ??? reasons.

Midway through the merge, "I think I am?" really isn't a good thing to have to say when asked if you're in any alliances.

As someone who lived through this, Gobias was immensely frustrating to deal with. He seemed to know he was on the bottom with his alliance, but when he was told said alliance was trying to to vote him out, his reaction was "naaaaaaaaah I don't believe you bye." He refused to listen to factual events, believing apparently that he would not be betrayed because he was not a threat, and didn't give Cergio the time of day.

Not shockingly, when Cergio turned the game around, they didn't see much reason for him to continue existing.

Noooooo

You forgot about how he asked half the game to ally with him during the fake merge. His pm chain with me literally had the subject line "Alliance?" And it was so beautiful. Like he wasn't just a no one, he was at the head of a giant mostly fake alliance

Man I kinda want to idol that

273. Ultron (D3f3nd3r) - Conclave

Image

'"Suck it Ultron!" -Zatanna

"I would, but usually I end up biting it off" -Me'

This character is approximately the definition of mediocrity. He kind of existed, didn't have a lot of personality, made only a few allies. He was in danger on his first-swap tribe and never even knew it, then went home on his next tribe, but to be honest I forgot that he actually did survive Adara. There's not a ton of personality in the confessional nor much in the way of proactivity.

Probably the most interesting plotline is him always having a bad feeling about everything, even when it's perfectly fine. It's all... pretty generic, about the most identity he's got is as a vanilla member of his starting tribe.

"
At times like these when enemies number more than friends
A friend indeed is what I need, not someone who pretends.
A friendly toast with Ampharos I know I'll never share
But that is just the kind of cross that every man must bear.
I'm on my way
I cannot stay
Another Day

I never got to know Lucario, or talk with Staryu
I never shared a joke with Toxicroak, instead I was one too.
Must I explain, it's such a pain to think if only I'd had you.
I'll play the fool but I don't mind, It's all I ever seem to do.
I'm on my way
I cannot stay
Another Day
"

Writing poems in his confessional after being eliminated is so iconic that I am having difficulty keeping this idol in my pants.

Now that our ties are severed
As we say goodbye
Let us not wonder whether
We are ready to take the dive
Let it dive, let it die, let it fade out of sight
Let it drag us down, let it fade
Grieve, but not grieve together
Mourn with nothing to say
Gone are those times forever
Lost are those sweet warm other days
Let it dive, let it die, let it fade out of sight
Let it drag us down, let it come between you and I
Let it dive, let it die, let it fade
Were we born to despair
Deeds done but not forgiven?
There will always be something there
As long as one of us goes on living
Let it dive, let it die
Let it fade out of sight
Let it drag us down, let it come between you and I
What's done is done, no reason to apologize
Let it dive, let it die, let it fade
